Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale of the onstage fight between prima donnas Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni is notorious, appearing in music histories to this day, but it is a fiction. Starting from this misunderstanding, The Rival Sirens suggests that the rivalry fostered between the singers in 1720s London was in large part a social construction, one conditioned by local theatrical context and audience expectations, and heightened by manipulations of plot and music. This book offers readings of operas by Handel and Bononcini as performance events, inflected by the audience's perceptions of singer persona and contemporary theatrical and cultural contexts. Through examining the case of these two women, Suzanne Aspden demonstrates that the personae of star performers, as well as their voices, were of crucial importance in determining the shape of an opera during the early part of the eighteenth century.

A passionate story of desire and denial, this final novel of Nellie Bly’s pen is perhaps her most prescient, mirroring events of her life to come. Not based on her reporting but on her own questions of love and the duality of her own nature, Bly plays out the questions that vex her in . . .Twins & Rivals!

Book Twins in Contemporary Literature and Culture

Download or read book Twins in Contemporary Literature and Culture written by Juliana De Nooy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-06-21 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of twins are told with astonishing frequency in contemporary culture. Films and novels from recent decades repeatedly tell of the stranglehold of brotherly love, the evil twin who steals her sister's lover, the homicidal mutant twin, the reunion of twins separated at birth, warring twins, and confusion between look-alikes. Twins in Contemporary Literature and Culture asks why we keep telling twin tales and how these have been transformed in recent retellings to reflect the preoccupations of the times.

Book Sandstorm Policy Failure in the Middle East

Download or read book Sandstorm Policy Failure in the Middle East written by Leon Hadar and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time has come for a serious debate on the future involvement of the United States in the Middle East and this original and provocative analysis challenges the prevailing wisdom of the Washington foreign policy establishment. Hadar provides a sweeping reexamination of the conceptual bases of American policy and proposes a strategy of "constructive disengagement" from the region, a policy of benign neglect as a way of promoting the interests of the United States as well as those of the people of the Middle East. In Sandstorm, Hadar calls for regional states and the European Union to take increased responsibility for security, economic growth, and political stability. This bold and innovative critique will inject new energy into the policy debate.

Download or read book Be Afra Volume 2 written by Oladipo G. B. Ogunseitan and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be Afra. Be a frater. Be a brother. Be our brother's keeper. 'Love the Brotherhood' was the message of Beloved Afra, for which he was crucified 500,000 years ago on a continent named after him - AFRICA. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy, science and religion. Life is not a happenstance. The Berlin Act 1885, the Biafran War 1967-1970, June 12, 1993, Sep 11, 2001; the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the USA or any other event in life is not a happenstance. This is demonstrated in Be Afra Volumes 1 & 2, using numerological analysis and cosmic clock charting. The Cosmic Law operates throughout the universe, seen and unseen. Be Afra discusses the origin of man, the root races with particular emphasis on the fourth root race, the progenitor of the black race; the law of karma, reincarnation, free will and other aspects of the cosmic law. Each root race has a divine purpose and from the beginning was endowed with divine love, wisdom and power to fulfill that purpose. Each had the knowledge of the cosmic law. Be Afra draws on sacred writings, If, Yrb legends and deep analysis of Yrb language to demonstrate that the black race had knowledge of the Everlasting Gospel, the Teaching that should keep mankind free from ignorance or defiance of the Law. Ignorance of that Law is no excuse. We are who we are and where we are, by series of decisions we took, at the Y-junctions of life. Beloved Great Divine Director, Manu of the seventh (the incoming) root race said: "Perhaps we have been a bit timid ourselves, or should I say conservative and dignified, in not employing more spectacular methods to acquaint mankind with the wonderful product which we have to offer. After all, blessed ones, we are marketing divine freedom to the earth and conveying it to individuals every day, yet we are seldom seen or heard in the marketplace of life. Perhaps the 'shouting from the housetops' through the multitudes of antennas reaching out into the ethers shall one day convey a greater measure of heaven's law to the earth. We shall see." (Pearls of Wisdom Vol. 8 S/No. 21 dated May 23, 1965)

Book The Changes of Cain

Download or read book The Changes of Cain written by Ricardo J. Quinones and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Era by era, from the writings of the classical Christian epoch up to East of Eden and Amadeus, from Philo to Finnegans Wake, Ricardo Quinones examines the contexts of a master metaphor of our culture. This brilliant work is the first comprehensive book on the Cain and Abel story. "Ricardo Quinones takes us on a grand tour of Western civilization in his admirable book, which reveals the riches of the Cain-Abel story as it develops from its Biblical origin to Citizen Kane and Michel Tournier. This is cultural history and literary criticism of the first order, finely written, formidably but gracefully erudite, and illustrating the capacity of Judeo-Christian culture and the modernity emerging from it constantly to criticize the darker side of its own foundations and realizations."--Joseph Frank "Ricardo J. Quinones skips Biblical and Talmudic exegesis to follow Cain and Abel through later centuries, from classical times to the present. What he uncovers sheds light on important shifts of consciousness and behavior in European and American culture. . . . Quinones writes with true eloquence and conviction. . . ."--James Finn Cotter, The Hudson Review "Quinones's study of how [the] three Cains were transformed by Romanticism and Modernism into a sometimes positive, sometimes negative, but always necessary archetype of the modern world is literary and cultural analytic history at its very best."--Choice Ricardo J. Quinones is Josephine Olp Weeks Professor of English and Comparative Literatures, and Director of the Gould Center for Humanistic Studies, at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California. He is the author of The Renaissance Discovery of Time (Harvard), Dante Alighieri (Twayne), and Mapping Literary Modernism: Time and Development (Princeton). Originally published in 1991. Book Legendary Rivals Collegiality and Ambition in the Tales of Early Rome

Download or read book Legendary Rivals Collegiality and Ambition in the Tales of Early Rome written by Jaclyn Neel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Legendary Rivals Jaclyn Neel argues for a new interpretation of the foundation myths of Rome. Instead of a negative portrayal of the city’s early history, these tales offer a didactic paradigm of the correct way to engage in competition. Accounts from the triumviral period stress the dysfunctional nature of the city’s foundation to capture the memory of Rome’s civil wars. Republican evidence suggests a different emphasis. Through diachronic analyses of the tales of Romulus and Remus, Amulius and Numitor, Brutus and Collatinus, and Camillus and Manlius Capitolinus, Neel shows that Romans of the Republic and early Principate would have seen these stories as examples of competition that pushed the bounds of propriety.

Book Lyman Bostock

Download or read book Lyman Bostock written by K. Adam Powell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyman Bostock Jr. had baseball in his blood. The son of a former Negro League standout, Bostock began his professional career with the Minnesota Twins in 1975. Two years later, he became one of the first players in major league baseball to cash in on the new era of free agency, signing with the California Angels for more than $2 million—one of the richest contracts in sports history at that time. But Bostock’s true potential would never be known. On September 23, 1978, Bostock was shot and killed in Gary, Indiana. He was just 27 years old. In Lyman Bostock: The Inspiring Life and Tragic Death of a Ballplayer, K. Adam Powell tells the story of Bostock’s humble beginnings in Birmingham, Alabama, his coming-of-age in Los Angeles, his involvement in the Black Power movement, his brief yet impactful baseball career, and his senseless murder in 1978. Those who knew Bostock and played alongside him believed he was good enough to win multiple batting titles, and perhaps even make the Hall of Fame some day. More than just a ballplayer, Bostock was known as a stand-out citizen who never forgot where he came from, investing hours of his time giving back to his community, visiting with local youth, and hosting baseball clinics. Lyman Bostock captures a remarkable era in professional baseball, an era when ballplayers such as Bostock still engaged closely with their fans even as power shifted from management and owners to the players. Through careful research, exclusive interviews, and rarely-seen photographs, Bostock’s life and the times in which he lived are conveyed in intimate detail. For baseball fans of all ages, Lyman Bostock’s biography is a poignant and inspiring story of an upcoming star whose life was cut much too short.
