Book The Ritual World of Paul the Apostle

Download or read book The Ritual World of Paul the Apostle written by Michael Lakey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Lakey explores the theological significance of the rituals of Baptism and the Lord's Supper in Pauline theology, with the argument culminating in an analysis of the significance of ritual dining in 1 Corinthians 10:14-22 and the Lord's Supper in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. By contrast with 'social world' forms of comparison between rituals in the Pauline communities and other communities in antiquity, this study focuses primarily upon the theologically integrating function these rituals perform in relation to Paul's theology and ethics. Lakey builds upon Clifford Geertz's systemic understanding of religion by showing how, for Paul, Baptism and the Lord's Supper facilitate specific connections between his metaphysics on the one hand, and the form or pattern of life he enjoins upon his churches on the other. This volume considers precisely what - given his theological and ethical premises - Paul's underlying beliefs regarding these ritual events may have been, allowing for a preliminary discussion of specific lines of post-interpretation in the early patristic period.

Book Popular Culture and Popular Movements in Reformation Germany

Download or read book Popular Culture and Popular Movements in Reformation Germany written by R. W. Scribner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1988-07-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation has traditionally been explained in terms of theology, the corruption of the church and the role of princes. R.W. Scribner, while not denying the importance of these, shifts the context of study of the German Reformation to an examination of popular beliefs and behaviour, and of the reactions of local authorities to the problems and opportunities for social as well as religious reform. This book brings together a coherent body of work that has appeared since 1975, including two entirely new essays and two previously published only in German.

Book excerpt: Founded in 1971 by Elizabeth Pepper, the art director of Gourmet magazine for many years, The Witches’ Almanac is a witty, literate, and sophisticated publication that appeals to general readers as well as hard-core Wiccans. At one level, it is a pop reference that will fascinate anyone interested in folklore, mythology, and culture, but at another, it is the most sophisticated and wide-ranging annual guide available today for the mystical enthusiast. Modeled after the Old Farmers’ Almanac, it includes information related to the annual Moon calendar (weather forecasts and horoscopes) as well as legends, rituals, herbal secrets, mystic incantations, interviews, and many a curious tale of good and evil. Although it is an annual publication, only about 15 percent of the content is specific to the date range of each issue. The Witches’ Almanac features more than 140 pages of interesting and timeless articles about witchcraft, magic, herbalism, charms, spells, and related topics written by authors from the witchcraft and magical communities. The theme of Issue 36 (Spring 2017 – Spring 2018) is Water: Our Primal Source. Included are “The Coffin Ring,” “A Beekeeper’s Year,” “The Margate Grotto,” “Speaking in Tongues,” “Poppets,” and “Thomas the Rhymer.”

Book New Religious Movements and Religious Liberty in America

Download or read book New Religious Movements and Religious Liberty in America written by Derek Davis and published by Baylor University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New nontraditional religious movements are the most likely groups to offend mainstream culture and the least likely to have representatives in government to ensure that their liberty is protected. These new religious movements are sometimes ostracized and subject to various forms of discrimination. As America becomes increasingly pluralistic, with more and more groups contributing to the nation's religious mosaic, new religious movements may well play an increasing role in the course of religious liberty in America, just as groups such as the Jehovah's Witnesses did formerly. This book explores the problems and possibilities posed by new religious movements for religious liberty in America.
