Download or read book The Mysteries of Freemasonry written by William Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2010-08-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Masonic ritual makes use of the architectural symbolism of the tools of the medieval operative stonemason. Freemasons, as speculative masons (meaning philosophical building rather than actual building), use this symbolism to teach moral and ethical lessons of the principles of "Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth".Two of the principal symbolic tools always found in a Lodge are the square and compasses. Some Lodges and rituals explain these tools as lessons in conduct: for example, that Masons should "square their actions by the square of virtue" and to learn to "circumscribe their desires and keep their passions within due bounds toward all mankind". However, as Freemasonry is non-dogmatic, there is no general interpretation for these tools (or any Masonic emblem) that is used by Freemasonry as a whole. These moral lessons are communicated in performance of allegorical ritual. A candidate progresses through degrees gaining knowledge and understanding of himself, his relationship with others and his relationship with the Supreme Being (as per his own interpretation). While the philosophical aspects of Freemasonry tend to be discussed in Lodges of Instruction or Research, and sometimes informal groups, Freemasons, and others, frequently publish to varying degrees of competence studies that are available to the public. Any mason may speculate on the symbols and purpose of Freemasonry, and indeed all masons are required to some extent to speculate on masonic meaning as a condition of advancing through the degrees. There is no one accepted meaning and no one person "speaks" for the whole of Freemasonry.

Book Reprints of Rituals of Old Degrees

Download or read book Reprints of Rituals of Old Degrees written by Albert Pike and published by . This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Pike is best known for his classic Freemasonic work called Morals and Dogma, but he was responsible for a number of other important books. This is one of those books, especially as it relates to the early development of the Freemasonic craft and its rituals. Pike held a great responsibility in Freemasonry, having been the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, USA. He believed this collection of rituals was highly important, and originally prepared and authorized this book for sale in 1879. Those included are virtually unknown today, but shed light on the basis of Freemasonic degrees and rituals. Included are the Wigan Rituals and the Master Mark Mason Ritual, both of which are early, little-known versions of these degrees. The Maconnerie D'Yorke Rituals were found in New Orleans and contain a wealth of historical information pertaining to their use, including references to Joseph Cerneau. Cerneau had developed his own competing version of the Scottish Rite, much to the consternation of the Southern Jurisdiction. The Knights Templar Ritual is the 1851 authorized revision, upon which the current one is based. The Grand Maitre Ecossais degree puts forth the idea that the true secret of Freemasonry is the alchemical transmutation of the initiate. An elite Masonic group in America limited to just 50 members, the Knights Beneficent of the Holy City, is rumored to use this degree. Also found here is an older version of the Royal Arch Exaltation Ceremony, upon which the current English ritual is based. It contains reference to "J.B.O.," a mysterious word that has since been removed from English Masonry. This rare reprint should be of great value to Freemasonic Lodges worldwide, or for those interested in the origins and development of Freemasonry in general.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in American Freemasonry: Based Upon Pike's "Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite," "Mackey's Masonic Ritualist," "the Encyclopaedia of Freemasonry," and Other American Masonic Standard Works So soon has a new edition of this volume become necessary that we must content ourselves with correcting such minor (typographical) errors as have been brought to our notice. It is a pleasure to be able to say that the reviews of this Study, so far published, in this country, in Canada, in South America, and in Europe, have been uniformly favorable. Catholics have hailed the book as a necessary and useful publication. Even Freemasons have been constrained to acknowledge its objectivity and calmness of tone. Thus a Masonic writer in the Missouri Historical Review says: "A Study in American Freemasonry... is based upon Pike's 'Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite' Mackey's works, and publications of other Masonic writers. It is written in a calm, argumentative manner, giving authorities for all the allegations that the author makes, so that no offense is felt by a Mason while reading it, though he may see the mistake of the author in the conclusion given by him." This "mistake" our critic specifies as follows: "The majority of American Masons adopt the York Rite of Masonry leading from the Blue Lodge through the Chapter to the Commandery of Knights Templar. In the Scottish Rite leading from the same Lodge to the 33 rd degree there is more of philosophic teaching, but Masons would reply to the assertions of the author, that in neither branch is there taught any concealed religion, philosophy or science, but that these are all fully set forth in the monitorial or esoteric Masonry, the esoteric Masonry being merely the forms of initiation and not a changing or addition to the monitorial part." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mysteries of Masonry: Being the Outline of an Universal Philosophy Founded Upon the Ritual and Degrees of Ancient Freemasonry As the earth is cold in winter, but revives nu der the genial sun of spring, bringing forth her love flowers as a token of divine favor; so the heart, when chilled by self-love, is a dreary waste, and darkness is upon the face of the deep. But when the heavenly Spirit of charity moves upon the waters, the heart is warmed, and the under standing is illuminated by a divine light. A thousand principles of latent truth spring forth to quicken and elevate the imagination to view, with reverence and awe, the unfoldings of those principles handed down to us through the golden age of man, concealed in correspondential sem blances, locked like a precious casket, and sealed with seven seals, which the Divine Hand will only open to a loving heart and faithful breast.
