Their “agrarian feminisms” offered an alternative to, but not necessarily a rejection of, second-wave feminism. Focusing on women in four national farm organizations in Iowa—the Farm Bureau, the Farmers Union, the National Farm Organization, and the Porkettes—Devine highlights specific moments in time when farm women had to reassess their roles and strategies for preserving and improving their way of life. Rather than retreat from the male-dominated world of agribusiness and mechanized production, postwar women increasingly asserted their identities as agricultural producers and demanded access to public spaces typically reserved for men. Over the course of several decades, they developed agrarian feminisms that combined cherished rural traditions with female empowerment, cooperation, and collaboration. Following organic practices and being certified are getting increasingly popular in the farming community with women having greater visibility in the realm of sustainable agriculture than ever before. The basis of this study is to give women farmers who are either certified organic* or non-certified organic* a platform to tell their story and divulge barriers they face in their profession. Additionally, this study reflects on broader themes behind organic certification involving the participants’ motivations and values. The term organic can take on many meanings depending on who is being asked, so it is important to collect data on this subject straight from the source. By interviewing women who are making most of the decisions on their land clearer definitions will arise and help bridge the gap between personal meaning and perceived meaning. Their unique experiences with food and farming led them to a path that helps sustain local economies and helps local communities access a nutritious food. Their different experiences culminate in a discussion for a change in how food is valued and perceived. While their stories range in scope, they share similar themes and leave one concerned with the current state of the food chain and farm policy for local food systems

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, existing documentation of women in the agricultural sector has surveyed topics such as agricultural restructuring and land reform, international trade agreements and food trade, land ownership and rural development and rural feminisms. Many studies have focused on either the high-income countries of the global North or the low-income countries of the global South. This separation suggests that the North has little to learn from the South, or that there is little shared commonality across the global dividing line. Fletcher and Kubik cross this political, economic, and ideological division by drawing together authors from 5 continents. They discuss the situation for women in agriculture in 13 countries worldwide, with two chapters that cover international contexts. The authors blur the boundaries between academic and organizational authors and their contributors include university-based researchers, gender experts, development consultants, and staff of agricultural research centers and international organizations (i.e., Oxfam, the United Nations World Food Program). The common thread connecting these diverse authors is an emphasis on practical and concrete solutions to address the challenges, such as lack of access to resources and infrastructure, lack of household decision-making power, and gender biases in policymaking and leadership, still faced by women in agriculture around the world. Ongoing issues in climate change will exacerbate many of these issues and several chapters also address environment and sustainability. This book is of great interest to readers in the areas of gender studies, agriculture, policy studies, environmental studies, development and international studies.
