Book The Rise of Wisdom Moon

Download or read book The Rise of Wisdom Moon written by Krishna mishra and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise of Wisdom Moon was composed during the mid-eleventh century by Krishna mishra, an otherwise unknown poet in the service of the Chandella dynasty, whose cultural and religious capital was Khajuraho. The early popularity of Krishna mishra’s work led to its frequent translation into the vernaculars of both North and South India, and even Persian as well. Famed as providing the enduring model of the allegorical play for all subsequent Sanskrit literature, The Rise of Wisdom Moon offers a satirical account of the conquest of the holy city of Benares by Nescience, of the war of liberation waged by the forces of Intuition, and of the freedom of the Inner Man that then follows the rise of Wisdom. But at the outset, when Nescience still has the upper hand, with minions like Lord Lust, such developments seem unlikely.

Book Ved nta Bhakti and Their Early Modern Sources

Download or read book Ved nta Bhakti and Their Early Modern Sources written by Rosina Pastore and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the Prabodhacandrodaya Nāṭaka (c. 1760 CE), an allegorical drama composed by Brajvāsīdās in Brajbhāṣā. It contributes to the study of vernacular nāṭakas with its first complete English translation. Moreover, the critical analysis shows that the foundational Sanskrit texts for Vedānta and those for Bhakti play a part in the Prabodhacandrodaya Nāṭaka's philosophical and religious edifice. At the same time, the investigation demonstrates that Brajvāsīdās expresses several philosophical ideas by adaptively reusing the Rāmcaritmānas by Tulsīdās (c. 1574 CE). Brajvāsīdās composes a dohā by combining one line of his invention with a line from the Mānas. This method is employed throughout all the personified metaphysical concepts. That Brajvāsī not only read Bhakti but also Vedānta through the Rāmcaritmānas highlights the philosophical and literary creativity in 18th c. North India. It points to the necessity to rethink the sources of Vedānta philosophies, by including works non-conventional for language and genre, because not in Sanskrit and not śāstras. Such sources may not be original in their contribution per se but are essential to understand how early modern philosophy was done, conceived and transmitted.

Book Prab dha Chandr daya or Rise of the Moon of Intellect

Download or read book Prab dha Chandr daya or Rise of the Moon of Intellect written by Krsnamisra and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prabôdha Chandrôdaya, or Rise of the Moon of Intellect: A Spiritual Drama; And Âtma Bodha, or the Knowledge of Self The word Prabôdha is derived from pra - meaning forth, or before, and bodha - knowledge, hence, it signifies the knowledge which dispels ignorance. In Professor H. H. Wilson's Dictionary, we find the following equivalents: - wakefulness, active or vigilant state of being; intellect, understanding, knowledge, wisdom. In the Marathi Dictionary, published under the direction of the Board of Education, in Bombay, the learned shastrîs and pandits say that Prabôdha means the knowledge which removes the darkness of ignorance caused by the illusion of Mâya, and shows the relationship of self, or soul, with the Universe of matter and spirit. Mr. J. Taylor, the author of the work uses the word "Intellect" for Prabodha; but it does not convey the full and comprehensive meaning as explained in Marathi Dictionary. The word Chandrôdaya. - from Chandra, the Moon, and udaya, the dawn, means - 'The dawn or rising of the Moon.' The word 'Moon' is also used to express the God presiding over the mind, and sometimes the mind itself. There is such a close relation between the Moon and man's mind that the changes in her position affect the mind, either physically or morally, and produce either good or bad results. Prabôdha Chandrôdaya, - The Title of this book, may, therefore, be properly said to imply either "The dawn of the light, or knowledge dispelling the darkness resulting from the ignorance of mind, caused by the illusion of Maya" or "The spiritual awakening of the mind." This volume being simply a reprint of the translation, we retain the original Title of the book though, in our humble opinion, it does not convey fully the sense. Book Winged Stallions and Wicked Mares

Download or read book Winged Stallions and Wicked Mares written by Wendy Doniger and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horses are not indigenous to India. They had to be imported, making them expensive and elite animals. How then did Indian villagers—who could not afford horses and often had never even seen a horse—create such wonderful horse stories and brilliant visual images of horses? In Winged Stallions and Wicked Mares, Wendy Doniger, called "the greatest living mythologist," examines the horse’s significance throughout Indian history from the arrival of the Indo-Europeans, followed by the people who became the Mughals (who imported Arabian horses) and the British (who imported thoroughbreds and Walers). Along the way, we encounter the tensions between Hindu stallion and Arab mare traditions, the imposition of European standards on Indian breeds, the reasons why men ride mares to weddings, the motivations for murdering Dalits who ride horses, and the enduring myth of foreign horses who emerge from the ocean to fertilize native mares.

  • ISBN : 0814741118
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book How Urvashi was Won written by Kālidāsa and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the three surviving plays by Kali dasa (fifth century), universally acknowledged as the supreme poet in classical Sanskrit, How Urvashi Was Won, like the other two, is a masterpiece of lyricism, subtle characterization, and the working through of a bold theme. How Urvashi Was Won is the story of King Puru ravas and his love for an immortal, the dancer Urvashi, who normally lives in the heaven of the gods but who has come down to earth in order to realize her passion for the alltoo- mortal king. The tragic love of this asymmetrical couple was described already in the ancient "Rig Veda" and later often expanded. Kali dasa has reworked the narrative so as to depict a goddess in the process of becoming fully, and dangerously, human—since only human beings (at their best) are, in Kali dasa’s vision, truly capable of the depths and intricacies of loving. This great work of love, loss, and eventual restoration speaks to the human condition generally in highly nuanced verses, accessible to any modern reader.

Book excerpt: Artist, Therapist and Teacher is a compilation of writings taken from the author's 40 years of experience. The book is organized chronologically, earlier works are presented first and the most recent, last. Chapters include writings from particular years accompanied with commentaries by Chris Belkofer, Ph.D. that highlight their relevance to contemporary art therapy practices. Bruce L. Moon uses music, performance art, poetry, sports activities, visual art forms, and other task-oriented modalities to cultivate relationships with clients. His vision of art therapy work is intimately connected to creativity, artistic self-expression, and exploration of meaning. Based on the author's art therapy practice, his overwhelming sense is that art therapy is continually being reshaped and transformed. This sense of ongoing “re-creation” is connected to the foundation of art's healing power, which resides in the ability of art to constantly shift and find new forms of expression. Unique features include: social applications of the arts, art-based group therapy, art therapy education as performance, metaphor, artfully constructed narratives, and case vignettes. Further enhanced with 12 illustrations to completely clarify the vignettes discussed, this book is a call to art therapists to embrace the artistic dimensions of professional identity, and use creativity when presenting ideas about the discipline of art therapy. This book will be an excellent resource for art therapists, art lovers, artists, art educators, and other mental health professionals.
