Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Wellington When the proposal for a series of republications in book form of some of the more important articles and short stories appearing in the pages of the Pall Mall Magazine was first made to us by Mr. R. B. Marston, we accepted it without hesitation, perceiving at once that an admirable medium would thus be provided by which much valuable literary matter might be made known to an even wider circle of the public than the readers of the periodical of which we have the conduct. Field-marshal Viscount Wolseley's graphic and analytical papers on the Decline and Fall of Napoleon, which constitute the first volume of the pall mall magazine library, achieved, as we are able to say from personal knowledge, a very remarkable success not only in England and America, but on the Continent; especially in Paris, where they were translated and published in book form. Much the same may be said with regard to General Lord Roberts' valuable and instructive articles on the Rise of Wellington, which found. Book Wellington Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wellington Classic Reprint written by George Hooper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellington Sometime in the spring of 1769, either in April or May, at Dublin or in Dangan Castle, County Meath, the boy was born whose name became, and is, familiar and famous to all the world - Wellington. His father was Garret, Earl of Mornington, a lover and composer of music; his mother was Anne Hill, a daughter of Lord Dungannon; he was christened Arthur, and he had three brothers who were men of mark in their day. The family name of his house, then Wesley, was afterwards transformed into Wellesley, which is described as the ancient spelling; but if one of that family came from Somerset, the spelling in the reign of Edward the First was Wellesleigh - Richard de Wellesleigh being set down in Rymer as the leader of a body of levies who took part in the Scottish wars. According to Mr. Gleig, Arthur was descended from a man of English stock, Walter Colley or Cowley, who migrated in the fifteenth century from Rutlandshire to Ireland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wellington Memorial: Wellington, His Comrades and Contemporaries I have devoted principal attention to Wellington in his military aspect, as the most remarkable, and most within my own competence to deal with; but I have not overlooked his great political services. I have wished also to present a general view of his personal character, to exhibit his individual traits and qualities, and describe them with suffi cient minuteness to show up into strong relief his unfailing sense of duty, his uprightness, his direct ness of purpose, his clear and abiding common sense. This is an age of revivals, and I venture to claim for this memorial, that it is a new move towards strengthening, indeed rehabilitating, We. Book Lives of Wellington and Peel Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lives of Wellington and Peel Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Wellington and Peel The following Biographies appeared in the London Times immediately upon the announcement of the deaths of their illustrious subjects. They are here reprinted in full, accompanied with the leading articles from the same journal expressive of the sentiments of the occasion. The newspaper of the day has probably never afforded a more complete or distinguished contribution to historical literature. The condensation of facts is admirable, presenting what every reader of intelligence just now demands, an able and comprehensive review of the many incidents of the career of England's great soldier and statesman of the present century Without seeking points of affinity in the course of the two, or looking beyond the reader's convenience in the preparation of this volume, there may yet be a propriety in the arrangement of these biographies from the personal relations of Peel and Wellington. Book Wellingtoniana

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellingtoniana: Anecdotes, Maxims, and Characteristics, of the Duke of Wellington Sir John Shore seems to have very promptly and acutely discerned the true character of the young soldier. The present Lord Teignmouth tells us that, at their first interview, at a levee, Sir John turned quickly round to his aides-de-camp, as Colonel Wesley retired, remarking: If that officer should ever have an Opportunity of distinguishing himself, he will do it, and greatly. He was a frequent guest at the table of Sir John Shore, who, in after-life, often adverted to the union of strong sense and boyish playfulness which, he said, was at that time a peculiar characteristic of his young friend. Book The Rise of Rome

    Book Details:
  • Author : Plutarch
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2017-07-25
  • ISBN : 0241326966
  • Pages : 959 pages

Download or read book The Rise of Rome written by Plutarch and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 959 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biographies collected in this volume bring together Plutarch's Lives of those great men who established the city of Rome and consolidated its supremacy, and his Comparisons with their notable Greek counterparts. Here he pairs Romulus, mythical founder of Rome, with Theseus, who brought Athens to power, and compares the admirable Numa and Lycurgus for bringing order to their communities, while Titus Flamininus and Philopoemen are portrayed as champions of freedom. As well as providing an illuminating picture of the first century AD, Plutarch depicts complex and nuanced heroes who display the essential virtues of Greek civilization - courage, patriotism, justice, intelligence and reason - that contributed to the rise of Rome. These new and revised translations by W. Jeffrey Tatum and Ian Scott-Kilvert capture Plutarch's elegant prose and narrative flair. This edition also includes a general introduction, individual introductions to each of the Lives and Comparisons, further reading and notes. The Rise of Rome is the penultimate title in Penguin Classics' complete revised Plutarch in six volumes. Other titles include Rome In Crisis, On Sparta, Fall of the Roman Republic, The Age of Alexander and The Rise and Fall of Athens (forthcoming 2014).

Book excerpt: First in the cult classic trilogy: “A fantastic zombie novel . . . There are many layers to this zombie apocalypse, and this book just gets things rolling” (Booklist). Welcome to New York City, Population Zero? The power grid has collapsed. There is no running water, no light, no heat. The massive neon signs of Times Square are dark now, and the subway trains crouch silent in their tunnels, waiting for commuters who will never return. An epidemic of staggering lethality has passed over the city and left nothing living in its wake. And yet the city is not deserted. The dead have returned to life, and they're hungry. The millions of people who once worked and lived in New York have been turned into cannibalistic monsters whose only function is to consume. No living person would dare enter the city--it would be suicide. Dekalb doesn't have a choice. He must protect his daughter's future, and that means retrieving vital medical supplies from the UN building in Midtown. A cadre of teenage girl soldiers have been recruited to help him find what he needs, and get back alive. They're well armed. They're devoted to their mission and willing to sacrifice anything to pull it off. But the odds against them are staggering. Especially when it turns out that not all zombies are created equal. Deep inside the city a medical student named Gary comes back from the dead different--his mind is intact. He can still think and feel. He's hungry, just like the rest, but unlike them he can plan, plot, and scheme. He can even lead the others, bending them to his will. Soon he has a small army at his command, a growing mob of rotting corpses all devoted to one cause: to find meat for their master. When Dekalb and Gary cross paths sparks will fly, destinies will clash--and the future of humanity will be decided, one head shot at a time.
