Book Ideas and Movements That Shaped America 3 volumes

Download or read book Ideas and Movements That Shaped America 3 volumes written by Michael Green and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 2059 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America was founded on bold ideas and beliefs. This book examines the ideas and movements that shaped our nation, presenting thorough, accessible entries with sources that improve readers' understanding of the American experience. Presenting accessibly written information for general audiences as well as students and researchers, this three-volume work examines the evolution of American society and thought from the nation's beginnings to the 21st century. It covers the seminal ideas and social movements that define who we are as Americans—from the ideas that underpin the Bill of Rights to slavery, the Civil Rights movement, and the idea of gay rights—even if U.S. citizens often strongly disagree on these topics. Organized topically rather than chronologically, this encyclopedia combines primary sources and secondary works or historical analyses with text describing the ideas and movements in question. In addition, each entry includes a list of suggestions for further reading that directs readers to supplementary sources of information. The set's unique perspective serves to depict how American society has evolved from the nation's beginnings to the present, revealing how Americans as a people have acted and responded to key ideas and movements.

Download or read book Salvation and the Savage written by Robert F. BerkhoferJr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great, pre-Civil War attempt of Protestant missionaries to Christianize Native Americans is found by Robert F. Berkofer, Jr. to be a significant point of contact with enduring lessons for American thought. The irony displayed by this relationship, he says, did not really lie in the disparity between Anglo-Saxon ideals and the actual treatment of first peoples but in the failure of all, including the missions, to see that both sides had ultimately behaved according to their cultural values. Using the records of missions to sixteen tribes in various regions of the United States, Berkofer has carefully followed the hopeful efforts of sixty-five years. The ultimate outcome, when the Civil War brought most of the missions to an end, was only a nominal conversion of Native Americans, despite the unflagging optimism of missionaries struggling against cultural barriers.

Book Imperial Maine and Hawai i

Download or read book Imperial Maine and Hawai i written by Paul T. Burlin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imperial Maine and Hawai'i analyzes and elucidates some of the major themes and currents that shaped nineteenth-century American expansion in the Pacific. While the method used is a discussion of the lives and activities of individual Maine residents who were living in Hawai'i or dealing regularly with the archipelago, Paul T. Burlin's book is not a mere work of state history. Rather, the individual actors are employed as a proxy to discuss the larger issues involved in American imperialism.

Download or read book Hinduism in America written by Michael J. Altman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hinduism in America: An Introduction is a concise introduction to the long history of religion in the encounter between America and India. It is not a book that will tell you what Hinduism is; rather, it is an introduction to the variety of ways in which Hinduism has been represented, constructed, and practiced in the United States. Americans have been interested in the religions of India since the colonial period, and by the late nineteenth century the first Hindu teachers arrived in the United States. Throughout the twentieth century, interest in Hinduism and yoga grew, even as anti-Asian and anti-immigrant politics and policies in America intensified. When the Cold War led to changes in U.S. immigration policy in 1965, new immigrant communities arrived in the United States and built new Hindu institutions. Hinduism in America is an accessible introduction to these developments of Hinduism in the United States. Each chapter uses a key theoretical term in the study of religion to explore a variety of historical topics including: American missionary encounters with India; representations of Hindu religions in American literature; world religions and Hinduism; Vedanta; yoga; Hinduism in the American counterculture of the 1960s; and immigrant Hindu communities in the United States. Hinduism in America provides an overview of the multifaceted history of Hinduism in America. Ideal for students and scholars approaching the topic for the first time, the book includes sections in each chapter that provide useful theoretical terms for understanding that history.

Book The Home Base of American China Missions 1880 1920

Download or read book The Home Base of American China Missions 1880 1920 written by Valentin Rabe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During the closing decades of the nineteenth century, approximately two dozen Protestant mission societies, which since 1812 had been sending Americans abroad to evangelize non-Christians, coordinated their enterprise and expanded their operations with unprecedented urgency and efficiency. Ambitious innovations characterized the work in traditional and new foreign mission fields, but the most radical changes occurred in the institutionalization of what contemporaries referred to as the home base of the mission movement. Valentin Rabe focuses on the recruitment of personnel, fundraising, administration, promotional propaganda, and other logistical problems faced by the agencies in the United States. When generalizations concerning the American base require demonstration or references to the field of operations, China—the country in which American missionaries applied the greatest proportion of the movement’s resources by the 1920s—is used as the primary illustration."

Download or read book Reading Jonathan Edwards written by M.X. Lesser and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02-13 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of reader response to Jonathan Edwards, spanning 276 years, includes a reprint of two earlier works ? Jonathan Edwards: A Reference Guide (1981) and Jonathan Edwards: An Annotated Bibliography (1994) ? and the publication of a third, a gathering of commentary from 1994 to 2005. Nearly 140 essays have been added to the first and second works, while the last new gathering ? which includes a celebration of the tercentenary of Edwards??'s birth ? adds another 700 to the whole. The text preserves the pattern of arranging items alphabetically within a given year and of recording cross-references. Essays in a collection are annotated serially rather than alphabetically. Each of the three sections is self-contained with an introduction and annotated bibliography of its own. Adding to the immense value of this work to Edwards scholars are the chronology of Edwards??'s works, listed by date and by short and long title, which precedes the entire work, and the three comprehensive indexes ? of authors and titles, of subjects, and additions to the previous volumes.
