Book The Daddy Shift

Download or read book The Daddy Shift written by Jeremy Adam Smith and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing look at stay-at-home fatherhood—for men, their families, and for American societyIt’s a growing phenomenon among American families: fathers who cut back on paid work to focus on raising children. But what happens when dads stay home? What do stay-at-home fathers struggle with—and what do they rejoice in? How does taking up the mother’s traditional role affect a father’s relationship with his partner, children, and extended family? And what does stay-at-home fatherhood mean for the larger society? In chapters that alternate between large-scale analysis and intimate portraits of men and their families, journalist Jeremy Adam Smith traces the complications, myths, psychology, sociology, and history of a new set of social relationships with far-reaching implications. As the American economy faces its greatest crisis since the Great Depression, Smith reveals that many mothers today have the ability to support families and fathers are no longer narrowly defined by their ability to make money—they have the capacity to be caregivers as well. The result, Smith argues, is a startling evolutionary advance in the American family, one that will help families better survive the twenty-first century. As Smith explains, stay-at-home dads represent a logical culmination of fifty years of family change, from a time when the idea of men caring for children was literally inconceivable, to a new era when at-home dads are a small but growing part of the landscape. Their numbers and cultural importance will continue to rise—and Smith argues that they must rise, as the unstable, global, creative, technological economy makes flexible gender roles both more possible and more desirable. But the stories of real people form the heart of this book: couples from every part of the country and every walk of life. They range from working class to affluent, and they are black, white, Asian, and Latino. We meet Chien, who came to Kansas City as a refugee from the Vietnam War and today takes care of a growing family; Kent, a midwestern dad who nursed his son through life-threatening disabilities (and Kent’s wife, Misun, who has never doubted for a moment that breadwinning is the best thing she can do for her family); Ta-Nehisi, a writer in Harlem who sees involved fatherhood as "the ultimate service to black people"; Michael, a gay stay-at-home dad in Oakland who enjoys a profoundly loving and egalitarian partnership with his husb∧ and many others. Through their stories, we discover that as America has evolved and diversified, so has fatherhood.

Book Constructing Masculinities and the Role of Stay at home Fathers

Download or read book Constructing Masculinities and the Role of Stay at home Fathers written by Aundrea Janae Snitker and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study examines how fathers, who stay home with their children and identify as the main care-giver within their family, construct their role as the primary caregiver. I analyze the narratives of stay-at-home fathers focusing on the thematic areas of isolation, resistance and the division of household labor. Unlike previous research, I examine the ways in which fathers construct their position as a stay-at-home father separate from the traditional stay-at-home mother role. Consequently, I focus on the constructions of masculinities by stay-at-home fathers that allows for the construction of the stay-at-home role to be uniquely tied to fatherhood rather than motherhood. In this research, I explore three questions: 1) how do stay-at-home fathers construct their masculinity, specifically in relation to their social roles as fathers, partners, peers, etc.? 2) Is the negotiation of household labor, including care work and household tasks, in these families a reflection of shifting gender roles in the home where the primary caregiver is the father? 3) In what ways does social location and intersecting identities influence the ways in which fathers construct this stay-at-home identity? My research emphasizes how these fathers understand their role as a stay-at-home father while challenging some traditionally dominant expectations of fatherhood. Specifically, I use themes of isolation, resistance, and the division of household labor in order to understand the multiple ways fathers experience their roles as stay-at-home parents.

Book excerpt: You've heard all about it in recent years - the number of stay-at-home dads in North America just keeps climbing, gender roles are evolving, and the traditional family unit will never be the same. The media loves to spit out endless stats and numbers, while trying to make sense of the broader effects on society at large. But, what all of these news stories are missing is a truly honest and entertaining perspective of an experienced stay-at-home father, and his decade-long journey from a typical working stiff to an atypical house husband. Life is messy, and so is this story of one man's decision to abandon his career and embrace child rearing. Nothing about his passage into complete domestic servitude comes easy - starting with getting his wife pregnant, his second thoughts about quitting his job, dealing with colic, challenges with operating laundry machines, his lackluster cooking skills and inability to connect with other stay-at-home parents. This first-hand account of life in the domestic trenches describes how he's dealt with the reactions and judgments of a society not quite sure what to make of him - from complete strangers, to his very own wife. There's an undeniable growth seen in this story that reveals how the author's early reluctance to fully embrace his role as primary caregiver gave way to a sense of pride and purpose that inspired him to write down his story, and share his unique viewpoint and wisdom. His chronicles reveal how there's more than one path to successfully holding the household together and making a life at home truly rewarding. This particular stay-at-home dad isn't trying to tell the world how it should be done, but rather, how he did it - and made it work. The book is upbeat and lighthearted, and is peppered with humorous anecdotes of parenting hits and misses. At times, the views presented are not always politically correct, and push the general theory that men may have an easier time of managing stay-at-home parenthood. This is definitely not a "how-to" guidebook for prospective stay-at-home dads. Rather, it should be required reading for any married couple thinking about converting a husband from breadwinner to bread maker. For everyone else, it's an enlightening expedition into the heart of one man's twenty-year marriage and the parenting challenges and triumphs that came with his life-changing decision to become the primary caregiver.
