Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Louis Napoleon Of the two great French historians of the Second Empire, Ollivier devotes one chapter to the story of Louis Napoleons life before 1848, while La Gorce is content to introduce his hero in less ceremonious fashion; his four-page summary would hardly be an adequate, even if it were altogether an accurate, account of forty years of a life singularly crowded with incident and interest. Ordinarily, the historian might well plead that it is in no way incumbent on him to preface his history of any reign with a biography of the monarch up to the time of his accession. Indeed such a task would usually appear strangely unprofitable. The record of a royal upbringing must always in the telling of it seem to lack the elements of emulation and competition, the slight achievements and distinctions, which redeem from utter dullness the narrative of an orthodox education. Nor would there be any very apparent interest in the early career of one who from his position must share the limitations of royalty, while debarred from truly regal activities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louis Napoleon and the Recovery of France, 1848-1856 The extraordinary concentration of historic interest which the dominating figure of Napoleon has drawn to the First Empire has had for accompaniment - and possibly in part for consequence - a hardly less extraordinary neglect of the Second. The personal appeal of the first Napoleon sufficed to secure the prompt investigation as it became available of every kind of documentary evidence bearing upon his reign 1 and his imperious sway has kept historians toiling indefatigably upon his domain long after the Law of Diminishing Returns was beginning to illustrate itself in the results of their labours. Book Louis Napoleon and the Genesis of the Second Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Louis Napoleon and the Genesis of the Second Empire Classic Reprint written by Frank Halliday Cheetham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louis Napoleon and the Genesis of the Second Empire The hundred years that now separate us from the birth of Napoleon III, and the thirty-five years which have intervened since his death, ought to make it possible to arrive at something like an impartial and fair estimate of that remarkable man's personality and character. The fierce light that beats upon a throne has perhaps never beaten so fiercely as it did on that of the last sovereign who ruled over France. Compared with it, the gentle beam that fell on the throne shared by him to whom the words were addressed by the late Laureate was but a feeble and kindly ray. But long before the throne was reached Louis Napoleon had courted the strong light of publicity, and in its glare all his many faults and failings were relentlessly and conspicuously revealed. Such a light is hardly calculated to throw into relief those balancing good qualities which are perhaps the real basis of most men's characters, and in the case of Louis Napoleon many of his public acts before his advent to power were scarcely of a kind to win him the admiration or confidence of a public who knew him only by what may be termed his appearances on the stage. No public man, perhaps, has been the object of so much calumny and misrepresentation, and few public men have met calumny with so much dignity. The campaign of abuse directed upon him during the days of the Presidency was more than surpassed when the Empire collapsed at Sedan. My aim in it has been to forestall, as far as possible, the decisions of posterity, and to paint Louis Napoleon as history will paint him, when it comes dispassionately to review his career. The moderation of my views may, perhaps, displease the extreme members of all parties. But I do not write for them. I address myself to that large body of Englishmen who love fair play in all things, and are able immediately to distinguish truth from its Opposite. Book France and the Age of Revolution

Download or read book France and the Age of Revolution written by William Doyle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the turmoil and tragedy of the French Revolution to the rise and fall of the enigmatic figure of Napoleon Bonaparte, the history of France between 1789 and 1815 is one of the most enduringly fascinating - and widely-studied - periods of history. In this volume, the renowned historian William Doyle provides a new perspective on several key themes within the history of this period - from the world of the Ancien Regime to the Battle of Waterloo. He sheds new light on the causes of the French Revolution and the impact of the revolution outside France. In taking a fresh look at the Napoleonic Empire, he considers the influences on Napoleon's leadership decisions and the machinations of his court. Written by one of the leading historians of Revolutionary France, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the French Revolution and Napoleonic Europe.

Book The Story of France Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Story of France Vol 1 of 2 written by Thomas E. Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of France, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Times to the Consulate of Napoleon Bonaparte; To the End of the Reign of Louis the Fifteenth IT has been the purpose of the author to lay before the reader a clear narrative of the gradual development of a great people. N o attempt has been made to fill in every detail. The larger outlines of national growth have been followed, and every material change in the condition of the kingdom has been indicated. It is hardly necessary to say that every statement in the book is supported by authority. Not only have all the standard histories been consulted, but also those numerous [memoirs and Auto biographies in which the literature of France is so pecul iarly rich. To note the varying forms of government, to trace the ancient origins of modern laws and customs, to mark the encroachments of absolutism upon popular rights, to describe the long-continued struggle of the many to throw off the yoke of the few, to emphasize the corrupting influence of the union between Church and State, to illus trate once more the blighting effects of superstition, igno rance, blind obedience, unjust laws, confiscation under the disguise of unequal taxes, and the systematic plunder, year by year, of the weaker classes by the stronger, have been the motives which led to the enormous labour in volved in this book.
