Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The Poem relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding-guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create a sense of danger, the supernatural, or serenity, depending on the mood in different parts of the poem. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Other Poems: Lochiel's Warning and Other Poems by Thomas Campbell In his clumsily entitled Extempore Effusion upon the Death of James Hogg, Wordsworth has these lines, after referring to Hogg and to Walter Scott: - "Nor has the rolling year twice measured, From sign to sign, its steadfast course, Since every mortal power of Coleridge Was frozen at its marvellous source; ... The rapt One, of the god-like forehead, The heaven-eyed creature sleeps in earth." And in his poem, Resolution and Independence, though he does not name Coleridge, it is almost certain that he had him in mind when he wrote: - "My whole life I have lived in pleasant thought, As if life's business were a summer mood; As if all needful things would come unsought To genial faith, still rich in genial good; But how can he expect that others should Build for him, sow for him, and at his call Love him, who for himself will take no heed at all?" When he read the news of Coleridge's death, Wordsworth's voice faltered and broke, as he said he was the most wonderful man that he had ever known. It is always worth while to know what one poet thinks of another, especially if the two have been contemporaries, friends, intimate companions.
