This stimulating analysis of the conservative faction in France, revised by the author to include the government of General de Gaulle, should be of interest not only to students of that country's history and politics but also to general readers who would understand France's political tradition and where de Gaulle fits into it. This work is translated from the second and revised edition of La Droite en France: de le Première Restauration á la Ve République, published in Paris in 1963.

Book The French Revolutionary Wars

Download or read book The French Revolutionary Wars written by Gregory Fremont-Barnes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe's great powers formed two powerful coalitions against France, yet force of numbers, superior leadership and the patriotic fervour of France's citizen-soldiers not only defeated each in turn, but closed the era of small, professional armies fighting for limited political objectives. This period produced commanders whose names remain a by-word for excellence in leadership to this day, Napoleon and Nelson. From Italy to Egypt Napoleon demonstrated his strategic genius and mastery of tactics in battles including Rivoli, the Pyramids and Marengo. Nelson's spectacular sea victories at the Nile and Copenhagen were foretastes of a century of British naval supremacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maximilian I (1459–1519) skillfully crafted a public persona and personal mythology that eventually earned him the romantic sobriquet “Last Knight.” From the time he became duke of Burgundy at the age of eighteen until his death, his passion for the trappings and ideals of knighthood served his worldly ambitions, imaginative strategies, and resolute efforts to forge a legacy. A master of self-promotion, he ordered exceptional armor from the most celebrated armorers in Europe, as well as heroic autobiographical epics and lavish designs for prints. Indeed, Maximilian’s quest to secure his memory and expand his sphere of influence, despite chronic shortages of funds that left many of his most ambitious projects unfinished, was indomitable. Coinciding with the 500th anniversary of Maximilian’s death, this catalogue is the first to examine the masterworks that he commissioned, revealing how art and armor contributed to the construction of Maximilian’s identity and aspirations, and to the politics of Europe at the dawn of the Renaissance. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Book The Korean War and American Politics

Download or read book The Korean War and American Politics written by Ronald J. Caridi and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shaping of American foreign policy by partisan politics is the timely theme of this book. The focus is on the Republican Party's response to the Korean War and the Party's rise to power during first "limited war" officially proclaimed by the United States. The book traces the changing character of the Party during the 1940s and 1950s, from its postwar struggles between the noninterventionists and the internationalists, through the debates over the supremacy of Europe or of Asia in U.S. foreign policy, the frustrating operations of a limited war, and finally the political strategies of settlement and compromise leading to the election of President Eisenhower. In this well documented study, Ronald J. Caridi applies Norman Graebner's test of a political party's wisdom: in attempting to expand its influence through the successful use of foreign policy symbols, do the assumptions of the party form the basis of responsible alternatives that recognize national limitations? The research here indicates failure in that test, although the Republican Party, in a now familiar role, had been successful in transforming popular discontent into political victory. The spirit, issues, and personalities of the times are illustrated by reprints of Herblock cartoons of the period.
