Book Thailand s Hidden Workforce

Download or read book Thailand s Hidden Workforce written by Doctor Ruth Pearson and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Burmese women migrate into Thailand each year to form the basis of the Thai agricultural and manufacturing workforce. Un-documented and unregulated, this army of migrant workers constitutes the ultimate 'disposable' labour force, enduring gruelling working conditions and much aggression from the Thai police and immigration authorities. This insightful book ventures into a part of the global economy rarely witnessed by Western observers. Based on unique empirical research, it provides the reader with a gendered account of the role of women migrant workers in Thailand's factories and interrogates the ways in which they manage their families and their futures.

Book The Construction of Othering

Download or read book The Construction of Othering written by Puttaporn Areeprachakun and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of migrants from Myanmar working in Thailand became significant in 2015 when numerous famous foreign news outlets reported about conditions of slave labor in Thailand. The Thai military government launched several immediate policies in order to deal with the issue and improve Thailand's image. Even though the image of the state was enhanced, the problems about migrant workers from Myanmar still exist: migrant workers from Myanmar are still exploited and looked down upon by many native-born people. Therefore, in this dissertation, I investigate the stories, life experiences, and problems of migrant workers from Myanmar in Thailand. Drawing from close to twelve months of ethnographic fieldwork in Samut Sakhon Province, I argue that migrant workers from Myanmar in Samut Sakhon Province are economically and socially segmented and exploited at different scales through three ways of being constructed as Other: space, politics, and identities. Concerning spatial aspects, I discuss how migrant workers' social networks, government policies, job opportunities, income, brokers, and social and cultural preferences influence migrant workers' decisions to come and work in Samut Sakhon Province. Consequently, the area has become a cultural safe-haven for migrant workers from Myanmar. However, the area has also become an ethnic enclave causing people who reside there to be seen as others. Second, considering political aspects, I focus directly on how state actors view and manage migrant workers from Myanmar. Migrant workers from Myanmar have been intentionally constructed as others and as problems in Thailand not because they are sources of the problems, but because their insecure status (being problems and others) enables numerous Thai people and officials to exploit them. Finally, in terms of identity aspects, I focus on how they routinely encounter other workers in the factory and how the migrant workers are excluded by other workers. Based on my empirical study, I found that identities are a significant factor that divides people into in-group and out-group. However, I also illustrate several cases in which migrant workers were accepted by the native-born group members by the strategic use of identity in a new environment.

Book excerpt: This work gathers stories of the lives of Burmese migrants in Thailand, who fled their native country to escape the repressive military regime. The author offers a harrowing picture of a powerless group caught between two evils, merely seeking to eke out a living under adverse conditions. Since the repressive military regime (SLORC - now SPDC) seized power in Burma in 1962, the Burmese people have suffered untold repression and increasingly intolerable living conditions. For many, the flight to Thailand has become a saviour, not just to earn money on which to live,

Book Expectations and Benefits from Working in Thailand

Download or read book Expectations and Benefits from Working in Thailand written by Sonenaly Nanthavong and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is a study of the backgrounds and expectations of young Lao migrant workers who migrate to Thailand, as well as the benefits they want from working in this country. Most of these workers are recruited from Luang Prabang province to seek employment in the food processing factory in Prachinburi province. In addition, the research studied how Lao migrant workers came to work in the food processing factory. It was found that they came mainly through the recruitment companies, which could provide better protection for their rights under Thai law and the MOU which were signed by Lao PDR and Thailand in 2002. The study conducted a survey of 85 Lao migrant workers (55 female and 30 male) through both questionnaires and interviews and found that the main expectations of most Lao migrant workers from working in Thailand were earning money. They could earn more money to support and help their family at home; moreover, they also gained new experiences and new skills that could be useful when they go back home. Money from their savings could be invested in some enterprises of they own when they return, for example, rubber plantations, mushroom farms and so on. Another benefit is that those young Lao migrant workers were able to learn from the job, including the production process.

Book Education for Human Rights of Burmese Migrant Workers a Case Study of DEAR Burma School

Download or read book Education for Human Rights of Burmese Migrant Workers a Case Study of DEAR Burma School written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this research to examine the impact of education rights for Burmese migrant workers, especially non-formal education or vocational training. The objective of this paper is to identify the rights of migrant workers that non-formal education helps promote and protect. The case study is DEAR (Development of Education and Awareness of Refugees from Burma) Burma School which is a project of Thai Action Committee for Democracy in Burma (TACDB). DEAR Burma school provides non-formal education to migrant workers particularly language skill training, English and Thai, general knowledge on labor rights, migrant worker's rights, women rights, human rights, and computer skills. DEAR Burma has been established since 2003. There were 39 informants contacted for interview and two sessions of Focus Group Discussion are conducted with other 13 students. Burmese migrant workers in Thailand speak Burmese and their ethnic language. As Thai people do not understand these languages there are problems and misunderstandings which could cause arguments or conflicts. Moreover, the migrant workers are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. In particular, their rights as migrant workers are also restricted. In order to deal with these situations, they go back to school to receive education to improve their knowledge and security. The reasons why the participants came to DEAR Burma school so they can use their knowledge in their workplace, to communicate, to negotiate, to entertain, to access to information, and to look for a better job. According to the findings, education has positive impacts to migrant workers' life. With regard to the informants, though Thailand does not sign this convention, their rights as migrant workers have been respectively improved. Their livelihood, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, self-esteem, and right to access to information has been promoted. Additionally, troubles with Thai police and humiliation by other people, which was of concern to them, have been less frequent. Some participants use their knowledge of language to negotiate with their boss to hold their own passport or to express their ideas, or to talk to police if they stop them. When migrant workers know more about their rights, they start to negotiate and challenge with unfairness, most importantly, to stand up themselves.

Book SELF EMPLOYED MYANMAR LABOR MIGRANTS IN BANGKOK

Download or read book SELF EMPLOYED MYANMAR LABOR MIGRANTS IN BANGKOK written by Khin Nan Oo and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand, being the closest neighbor country to Myanmar, provides a strong pull factor for Myanmar people to migrate legally or illegally and to find a better life in the cities. There is a small group of Myanmar people who work differently from other groups. One interesting factor that I would like to propose in this paper is how the roti sellers, who are mostly Muslim, can, have their economic survival and cultural adaptation in Thailand which is Buddhist. My paper attempts to discover the local narration and an insight from the roti sellers in Bangkok as a marginalized group of people, but they tend to grow their roti selling business in new environment and try to integrate their lifestyle with different culture. Qualitative and ethnographic method approaches will be applied in this research. Snowball sampling will be used as a method to collect the data.

Book Factors Motivating Myanmar Migrant Workers

Download or read book Factors Motivating Myanmar Migrant Workers written by Phennapha Chandaeng and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explores employee motivation of a factory located in Songkhla Province, Thailand. The factory's assumed name is Sidhiphatra Cold-Storage Factory. It employs 2,000 Myanmar migrant workers as well as Thai local workers who live in Songkhla Province. To be specific, Myanmar migrants are only a foreign nationality that the factory hires. All Myanmar migrants are recruited under the MOU process. The information for analysis were obtained from non-participant observation and in-depth interviews. The results revealed that Sidhiphatra Cold-Storage Factory has its own measures to motivate its employees positively and negatively. In terms of positive motivation, the factory established a reliable system of wage payments and provided free accommodation, creating employee morale and offering freedom of dress and day-off. For negative motivation, Sidhiphatra Cold-Storage Factory follows the regulations specified in the MOU agreement to strictly control and manage Myanmar migrant workers. All motivational activities have enhanced productivity and workers' performance.
