Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Right of Systematic Theology Systematic theology has fallen on evil days. To her may be applied, with scarcely a change of a word, what Kant in the Preface to his famous Critique says of metaphysics: Time was when she was the queen of all the sciences, and if we take the will for the deed, she certainly deserves, so far as regards the high importance of her Object-matter, this title of honour. Now it is the fashion Of the time to heap contempt and scorn upon her, and the matron mourns, forlorn and forsaken, like Hecuba. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology The pages of this volume contain the substance of lectures on Systematic Theology which have been given by the writer, for nearly forty years, to successive classes of students at the Moravian College and Theological Seminary of Bethlehem, Pa. It is the first work of this kind written in the English language by a member of the oldest Protes tant Church, founded by the followers of J ohn Hus in 1457. While in no sense an official publication, but entirely inde pendent and personal in its statements and conclusions, it will be found to represent fairly the view - point of the Mo ravian Church or Unitas F ratrum, -as to the leading features of Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology. Some persons may think it ill advised to publish such a work at this time of theological unrest and of apparently sharp contrasts between traditional and modern theology. But as to all that is really essential in Christian doctrine, it is -as timely now as ever, to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints (jude v. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, our blessed Saviour, is as well suited to the needs of the twentieth cen tury of the Christian era as to the first. As for non essentials, such as denominational distinctions, ecclesiastical formulas, dogmatical definitions and historical criticism, it behooves all honest seekers after the truth, whether they call themselves orthodox or liberal, conservative or ad vanced, to acknowledge the limitations of our religious knowledge and understanding. For at best we know in part and we see in a mirror darkly (i Cor. Realizing this truth, we will be prepared to discuss all ques tions that present themselves in the different departments of Christian doctrine, in the spirit of charity, without narrow prejudice or assumption of a monopoly of wisdom, taking into consideration, if possible, all the new light which science, history and Christian experience have shed[preface to the jfirst Ebition. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Systematic Theology, and Christian Ethics In this treatise, all the doctrines of the Christian religion are supposed to be drawn from the Scriptures, and set forth in their logical order, so that they may stand before the mind as a system of religious truth. Yet many facts here put together are revealed but in part, and therefore their agreement with one another can be seen but in part. Book excerpt: Considered one of the classics on Systematic Theology, the book covers all the basics on the reality of God, the atonement of Christ and the final state of man and the last things. Anyone who wishes to study theology would be wise to read this book as many in the Reformed tradition hold that it is a landmark in its field. It is arguably the most important twentieth century compendium of Reformed Theology. 'The work seemed particularly important to me', writes the author, 'in view of the widespread doctrinal indifference of the present day, of the resulting superficiality and confusion in the minds of many professing Christians, of the insidious errors that are zealously propagated even from the pulpits, and of the alarming increase of all kinds of sects.

Book Plain Theology for Plain People

Download or read book Plain Theology for Plain People written by Charles Octavius Boothe and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

  • Author : Gregg Allison

Download or read book Historical Theology written by Gregg Allison and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Theology presents the key pillars of the contemporary church and the development of those doctrines as they evolved from the history of Christian thought. Most historical theology texts follow Christian beliefs in a strict chronological manner with the classic theological loci scattered throughout various time periods, movements, and controversies—making for good history but confusing theology. This companion to the classic bestseller Systematic Theology is unique among historical theologies. Gregg Allison sets out the history of Christian doctrine according to a topical-chronological arrangement—one theological element at a time instead of committing to a discussion of theological thought according to its historical appearance alone. This method allows you to: Contemplate one tenet of Christianity at a time, along with its formulation in the early church—through the Middle Ages, Reformation, and post-Reformation era, and into the modern period. Become familiar with the primary source material of Christian history's most important contributors, such as Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others. Understand the development of evangelical doctrine with a focus on the centrality of the gospel. Discern a sense of urgent need for greater doctrinal understanding in the whole church. Historical Theology is an easy-to-read textbook for any Christian who wants to know how the church has come to believe what it believes today. Gregg Allison's clear and concise structure make this resource an ideal introduction to Christian doctrine.

Of the original work there have been printed seven editions, each edition embody ing successive corrections and supposed improvements. During the twenty years which have intervened since its first publication I have accumulated much new material, which I now offer to the reader. My philosophical and critical point of view meantime has also somewhat changed. While I still hold to the old doctrines, I interpret them differently and expound them more clearly, because I seem to myself to have reached a fundamental truth which throws new light upon them all. This truth I have tried to set forth in my book entitled Christ in Creation, and to that book I refer the reader for further information. Book Lectures on Systematic Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Systematic Theology Classic Reprint written by Charles Grandison Finney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Systematic Theology In many respects Mr. Pinney's theological and moral system will be found to differ both from the Calvinistic and Arminian. In fact, it is a system of his own, if not in its separate portions, yet in its con struction; and as a whole is at least unique and compact; a system which the Author has wrought out for himself, with little other aid than what he has derived from the fount itself of heavenly truth, and his own clear and strong perception of the-immutable moral principles and laws by which the glorious Author of the universe governs all his intellectual creatures. There is one circumstance that will recommend the volume, and ought to recommend it, to' impartial inquirers who are not bound to the words of any master save their Divine one it is, that the Author in his youth was trained in none of the theological schools of his country, and had imbibed, therefore, no educational preference for one system more than another. He had been disciplined to argumenta tion, logic; and the laws of evidence, in a very different arena; and had advanced in the science of the Law before he had felt the truth of Christianity, or thought of studying its doctrines. His views, there fore, will be found more deserving of attention and examination, from the fact of his mental independence in the formation of them.
