This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Rifle Brigade from 1809 to 1813 - mainly Peninsular War in which the regiment was involved from start to finish. On 10th May 1809 the strength of the 1st Battalion was 1,536 and the 2nd 1,579 and so a 3rd Battalion was formed. The unfortunate 2nd Battalion was involved in the Walcheren expedition August to December 1809 and when our troops evacuated the place battle deaths had amounted to 111, deaths from disease numbered over 4,000. But the main subject in this volume is the Peninsular War in which the regiment played a very active part from beginning to end. All three battalions were involved and seventeen Battle Honours were awarded, the highest number for any regiment in that campaign. The descriptions of operations are in detail, supported by superb maps. Throughout his account the author draws upon contemporary sources, official correspondence, despatches, reports, letters, diaries, reminiscences and on the work of such historians as Fortescue and Oman. —Print Ed.

Book excerpt: Talbot House Poperinghe was opened in November 1915 as a 'Soldiers Club' - a haven from hell - by two Chaplains of the 6th Division, Philip 'Tubby' Clayton and Neville Talbot. The house was dedicated to the memory of Gilbert Talbot, Neville's brother, who had been killed in in the afternoon counter-attack (set up to re-take the positions lost in the early morning Liquid Fire attack of the same day) at Hooge on 30 July 1915. For the following three years, except for a short period in 1918, the doors of Talbot House never closed and it became a 'home-from-home' for the officers and men of the British and Imperial armies of the time. Today Talbot House is a living museum offering a friendly greeting and a cup of tea to visitors on their arrival - a house rule established by 'Tubby' Clayton in 1915. Bringing to the reader the history of the house and its contents, the book brings to life the multitude of events that took place in and around it as well as telling the little-known stories of Clayton's frequent trips to the front line to minister to the men in the trenches around Ypres

Book Soviet Naval Infantry 1917 91

Download or read book Soviet Naval Infantry 1917 91 written by David Greentree and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-16 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon Soviet sources, this book assesses the evolving organization, uniforms, insignia, weaponry and personal equipment of Soviet naval infantry units from 1917 to 1991. Featuring eight plates of specially commissioned artwork alongside carefully chosen archive photographs, this study charts the history and appearance of the Soviet Union's naval infantry, from the October Revolution to the end of the Soviet era. Although Russian naval infantry achieved fame during the October Revolution they were quickly disbanded, only being re-established in 1939. Following the Axis invasion of 1941 some 500,000 Soviet Navy personnel served on land, fighting in the defence of Leningrad, Odessa and Sevastopol and the recapture of the Crimea in 1943–44; Soviet naval troops also participated in the invasion of Manchuria in 1945. During the Cold War era the Soviet Union developed an amphibious assault capability that had a vital strategic role – to capture an aggressor's geographical exits to the oceans and thereby forestall threats to Soviet submarine bases. Naval infantry forces could deploy a wealth of firepower assets, while the use of amphibious ships, hovercraft and helicopters aided their rapid deployment, even amid ice-bound terrain in the Arctic. All of these developments are described and illustrated in absorbing detail in this study.
