Book excerpt: The Riddle of the Hollow Reed is a childrens story about a traveling dervish who arrives in a city and becomes the catalyst for its transformation. When he arrives, the traveling dervish begins to play his flute to the townspeople, telling them that God created them because He loved them. Although the rulers of the town, not wanting change, scheme against the dervish, the townspeople begin to believe the dervishs message, and the forces of corruption in the town are defeated through the power of the dervishs love. The dervishs teachings of love and unity are symbolized by the beautiful music of his flute. The forces of corruption are symbolized by an assorted cast of characters such as the king, queen, princess, duke, sheriff, and jester of the city. Each corrupt character, at some point, is given the opportunity to play the flute of the dervish. Whenever a corrupt character attempts to play the flute, a particular ribbon with a particular vice comes out of the flute. Finally, the flute is thrown away and is found by a beautiful maiden, who was a student of the dervish. When she plays the flute, a beautiful melody comes out of it, and the maiden is able to help the residents transform their city into a place where people love and care for one another. There are sixteen illustrations that capture key scenes from the story.

Book excerpt: "Saylor rivals Robert Graves in his knack for making the classical world come alive." --(ortland) Oregonian "Engrossing...Ironic and satisfying." -- San Francisco Chronicle The third in Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa novels featuring Gordianus the Finder. Gordianus, disillusioned by the corruption of Rome circa 63 B.C., has fled the city with his family to live on a farm in the Etruscan countryside. But this bucolic life is disrupted by the machinations and murderous plots of two politicians: Roman consul Cicero, Gordianus's longtime patron, and populist senator Catilina, Cicero's political rival and a candidate to replace him in the annual elections for consul. Claiming that Catilina plans an uprising if he loses the race, Cicero asks Gordianus to keep a watchful eye on the radical. Although he distrusts both men, Gordianus is forced into the center of the power struggle when his six-year-old daughter Diana finds a headless corpse in their stable. Shrewdly depicting deadly political maneuverings, this addictive mystery also displays the author's firm grasp of history and human character. On first publication back in 1994, Catilina's Riddle was a finalist for the Hammet Award.

Book Fasti

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ovid
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2004-10-28
  • ISBN : 0141913339
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Fasti written by Ovid and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-10-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written after he had been banished to the Black Sea city of Tomis by Emperor Augustus, the Fasti is Ovid's last major poetic work. Both a calendar of daily rituals and a witty sequence of stories recounted in a variety of styles, it weaves together tales of gods and citizens together to explore Rome's history, religious beliefs and traditions. It may also be read as a subtle but powerful political manifesto which derides Augustus' attempts to control his subjects by imposing his own mythology upon them: after celebrating the emperor as a Jupiter-on-earth, for example, Ovid deliberately juxtaposes a story showing the king of the gods as a savage rapist. Endlessly playful, this is also a work of integrity and courage, and a superb climax to the life of one of Rome's greatest writers.
