Book Building Nevada s Highways

Download or read book Building Nevada s Highways written by Jennifer E. Riddle and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roads are rarely given a second thought yet are indispensable to life. Admittedly, a book dedicated to roadways sounds a bit dry. But behind every double-diamond interchange, every pork chop island, and every type of asphalt is a fascinating history of the traveling public. This book reveals the hidden history of building the Silver State's highways since 1917. The next time you take a road trip across Nevada on the Lincoln Highway (US 50) or the Victory Highway (US 40) or follow a rutted road to a once-booming ghost town think of the ingenious and industrious men and women, surveyors, engineers, chemists, and yes, even the teams of mules that built the roads we still travel today.

They've spent all their lives inside an amethyst bottle with their mother and father, Aristede and Cassidy. They become suddenly interested in the outside world when they view a young girl through the window of their genie bottle; they soon learn her name is Brianna. Brianna has come to visit her grandparents, the owners of the genie jar. She feels drawn to the beautiful bottle, and when she pops the cork, she becomes the master of the genies inside. The triplets are mischievous, though, and they plan to trick Brianna into using all her wishes right away. Their mischief goes too far when Brianna finds herself trapped inside their bottle. The boys are happy to introduce her to the world of the jinn. They show her genie mail, flying camel races, and even a game called JinJi. On the boys' eleventh birthday, they receive a mysterious pentagonal box. Opening the strange gift is a riddle, but it seems the box could have the power to send Brianna home; if not, she could be stuck in the bottle forever.

Book Constructing Race and Ethnicity in America

Download or read book Constructing Race and Ethnicity in America written by Dvora Yanow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean in the U.S. today when we use the terms "race" and "ethnicity"? What do we mean, and what do we understand, when we use the five standard race-ethnic categories: White, Black, Asian, Native American, and Hispanic? Most federal and state data collection agencies use these terms without explicit attention, and thereby create categories of American ethnicity for political purposes. Davora Yanow argues that "race" and "ethnicity" are socially constructed concepts, not objective, scientifically-grounded variables, and do not accurately represent the real world. She joins the growing critique of the unreflective use of "race" and "ethnicity" in American policymaking through an exploration of how these terms are used in everyday practices. Her book is filled with current examples and analyses from a wealth of social institutions: health care, education, criminal justice, and government at all levels. The questions she raises for society and public policy are endless. Yanow maintains that these issues must be addressed explicitly, publicly, and nationally if we are to make our policy and administrative institutions operate more effectively.

Taking a cross-disciplinary approach, this publication features research-based chapters relevant to sociologists, media professionals, psychologists, philosophers, advertising professionals, researchers, and graduate level students studying in related areas.
