Book Grace in Season

Download or read book Grace in Season written by J. A. DiNoia and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Preach the Word...in season and out of season..." 'Grace in Season: The Riches of the Gospel in Seventy Sermons' joyfully fulfills these words of St. Paul. This matchless collection of Archbishop J. Augustine Di Noia's preaching, alive with the wisdom of the Dominican tradition, the Church Fathers, and the Communion of Saints, opens Sacred Scripture and shows forth the unchanging glory of the Good News. The light of that glory illuminates every season of human life, revealing the loving hand of God's providence at work in both the extraordinary events and the ordinary moments of salvation history. A ready and refreshing tonic for those who thirst for the living water of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, 'Grace in Season' also provides for other preachers, as Aquinas Guilbeau, O.P., writes in his Foreword, "a model for gently but effectively subjecting the vain restlessness of the world to the merciful restlessness of the Word." --

True life for the follower of Jesus really is a moment-by-moment trust that God is dependable and fulfills his promises. This is living by faith in future grace, which provides God's mercy, provision, and wisdom—everything we need—to accomplish his good plans for us. In Future Grace, chapter by chapter—one for each day of the month—Piper reveals how cherishing the promises of God helps break the power of persistent sin issues like anxiety, despondency, greed, lust, bitterness, impatience, pride, misplaced shame, and more. Ultimate joy, peace, and hope in life and death are found in a confident, continual awareness of the reality of future grace.

Book excerpt: The unpardonable sin is lurking like a deadly shark preying on its next unsuspecting meal. ... Will you be its next victim? One of the most confusing and debated teachings of the Bible is the unpardonable sin, found in Matthew 12:31: "Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men." Some attribute this frightening sin to cursing the name of God, while others believe it has to do with murder. Whatever it is, millions of Christians live in fear that they've committed it and have no real hope. But even worse, others might be close to living beyond God's mercy and don't even know it! What is the Bible truth about the unpardonable sin? What is so awful about it and why can't God forgive it? You don't need to guess! Pastor Doug Batchelor tackles these questions to give you all the information you need to know about this perplexing topic. Not only will you get clear and penetrating answers, you'll discover new hope and a strategy to stay right with God.

Book excerpt: How Are Your Finances Shaping Your Heart? Jesus knew that how we think about money shapes our character. Our approach can make us more like him—full of contentment, purpose, and freedom—or it can cause a tragic separation from God and the joy he offers. We need a firm foundation for faith and finances. In True Riches, John Cortines and Gregory Baumer invite us to experience four transformations in our financial lives, moving from pride to gratitude so that we see everything as a gift; coveting to contentment so that we spend wisely; anxiety to trust so that we save appropriately; and indifference to love so that we give extravagantly. Full of scripture, personal stories, and practical application, True Riches offers a clear path away from the empty pursuit of wealth and into more intimate relationship with God. Book excerpt: A new commentary for today's world, The Story of God Bible Commentary explains and illuminates each passage of Scripture in light of the Bible's grand story. The first commentary series to do so, SGBC offers a clear and compelling exposition of biblical texts, guiding everyday readers in how to creatively and faithfully live out the Bible in their own contexts. Its story-centric approach is ideal for pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and laypeople alike. Each volume employs three main, easy-to-use sections designed to help readers live out God's story: LISTEN to the Story: Includes complete NIV text with references to other texts at work in each passage, encouraging the reader to hear it within the Bible's grand story. EXPLAIN the Story: Explores and illuminates each text as embedded in its canonical and historical setting. LIVE the Story: Reflects on how each text can be lived today and includes contemporary stories and illustrations to aid preachers, teachers, and students. —Ephesians— Like all of Paul's letters, Ephesians is centered in the gospel and its implications. It tells the story of what God has done in Christ and spells out the ethical implications of this story. But the letter to the Ephesians is unique among Paul's letters in many ways, including in how it tells of the story of God, beginning "before the creation of the world" and ending in eternity. Edited by Scot McKnight and Tremper Longman III, and written by a number of top-notch theologians, The Story of God Bible Commentary series will bring relevant, balanced, and clear-minded theological insight to any biblical education or ministry.

Book excerpt: THROUGH false emphasis by many religious leaders, Christianity has become in the estimation of a large part of the public no more than an ethical system. The revealed fact, however, is that the supreme feature of the Christian faith is that supernatural, saving, transforming work of God, which is made possible through the infinite sacrifice of Christ and which, in sovereign grace, is freely bestowed on all who believe. God has given instruction to those who are saved, it is true, as to the manner of life which is consistent with their new heavenly calling and standing in Christ; but in its spiritual blindness, the world, led by its blind leaders, sees in Christianity only the rule of life which is secondary. The blindness of the world at this point, with the consequent neglect of all that is vital in the Christian faith, is both anticipated and explained in the Word of God.The two foundation truths which determine all spiritual perception are that, by divine arrangement, (1) the Spirit is given only to those who are saved, and (2) spiritual understanding is made to depend exclusively on the presence of the Spirit of God in the heart. The precise body of truth which may be understood only through the ministry of the indwelling Spirit is described as, "things" related to the Father, "things" related to the Son, "things" related to the Spirit, "things" to come, and "the kingdom of God". We read:"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually [by the Spirit] discerned" (1 Cor. 2:14)."Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3)."Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him" (John 14:17)."But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ ... should shine unto them" (2 Cor. 4:3, 4)."The world by wisdom knew not God" (1 Cor. 1:21)."He that is spiritual judgeth [discerneth] all things, yet he himself is judged of no man" (1 Cor. 2:15)."Now we have received ... the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God" (1 Cor. 2:12)."Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you" (John 16:13-15)."But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him" (1 John 2:27)."Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God" (1 Cor. 2:9, 10)."Through faith we understand" (Heb. 11:3).Spiritual understanding is not, therefore, dependent upon human sagacity or learning; it depends only on the teaching of the indwelling Spirit. Possessing this Biblical testimony, misunderstanding at this point is without excuse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logos Bookstores' Best Book in Spirituality/Devotional Christianity Today Book of the Year Honorable Mention, Best Book of the Year from Byron Borger, Hearts and Minds Bookstore As Christians, we're squeamish about desire. Isn't wanting sinful and selfish? Aren't we supposed to find and follow God's will rather than insisting upon our own? The story of each person is a story of want—desires unmet, hopes dashed, passions pursued and ambitions fulfilled. Our wants cannot be ignored. But when desire is informed by Scripture and re-formed by our spiritual practices, it can root us more deeply in the fundamental belief that God is good and generous and can invite us into active kingdom participation. Jen Pollock Michel guides us on a journey of understanding who we are when we want, and reintroduces us to a God who gives us the desires of our hearts. That same good God calls us into a new reality in which we seek first his kingdom and righteousness, and we discover our disordered desires burned away while our truest longings are happily fulfilled and purified. The disciples asked Jesus to "Teach us to pray." This book asks, "Teach us to want."
