Download or read book Breast Cancer Epidemiology written by Christopher Li and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-11 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer remains a disease of considerable public health importance worldwide, with over 800,000 new cases diagnosed globally each year. Considerable energy is currently being spent by researchers to further our understanding of this complex disease, however, keeping up with all of the new data is a real challenge given the sheer volume of information that becomes available on a daily basis. The purpose of this book would be to provide a comprehensive review of breast cancer epidemiology, covering the topics of disease burden, etiology, risk factors, prevention, early detection/screening, treatment, and outcomes. The book would be a single comprehensive source of the most recent information on breast cancer epidemiology, and it would serve as a valuable resource for breast cancer researchers across disciplines regardless of what stage of their career they are in. To the knowledge of the editor, no such resource is currently available.

Book Male Reproductive Cancers

Download or read book Male Reproductive Cancers written by William D. Foulkes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge about cancer genetics is rapidly expanding, and has implications for all aspects of cancer research and treatment, including molecular causation, diagnosis, prevention, screening, and treatment. Additionally, while cancer genetics has traditionally focused on mutational events that have their primary effect within the cancer cell, recently the focus has widened, with evidence of the importance of epigenetic events and of cellular interactions in cancer development. The role of common genetic variation in determining the range of individual susceptibility within the population is increasingly recognized, and is now being widely addressed using information from the Human Genome Project. These new research directions will highlight determinants of cancer that lie outside the cancer cell, suggest new targets for intervention, and inform the design of strategies for prevention in groups at increased risk. Today, the NCI is putting more and more money into research into the genetics of cancer. The very first of the NCI’s stated research priorities is a project called The Cancer Genome Atlas. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) is a comprehensive and coordinated effort to accelerate the understanding of the molecular basis of cancer through the application of genome analysis technologies, including large-scale genome sequencing. The NCI and the NHGRI (National Human Genome Research Institute, where the series editor is employed) have each committed $50 million over three years to the TCGA Pilot Project. This book proposes cover the latest findings in the genetics of male reproductive cancers; specifically cancers of the prostate and testes. The volume will cover the epidemiology of these cancers; model systems, pathology, molecular genetics, and inherited susceptibility.

Book Vegetables Whole Grains and Their Derivatives in Cancer Prevention

Download or read book Vegetables Whole Grains and Their Derivatives in Cancer Prevention written by Marja Mutanen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetables, Whole Grains and their Derivatives in Cancer Prevention looks in detail at the evidence regarding the effects and mechanisms of action of potentially cancer-preventive components and their sources from plant kingdom. The book covers current knowledge on certain foods and their constituents in cancer prevention, such as cruciferous and green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, tomato lycopene and carotenoids, alliums and their sulphur and selenium constituents, and capsaicinoids from chilli peppers. It focuses not only on single compounds but aims to widen the view by discussing a whole-diet approach in cancer prevention. A single component may lose its chemopreventive efficacy when isolated from the food matrix and in many cases isolated and concentrated components as supplements may actually induce tumor development. Apart from describing the effects and mechanisms of action, the chapters also contain information on intake, bioavailability, metabolism and possible toxic effects of foods and components presented. Evaluation and comparison of the data from mechanistic studies in vitro with those from animal experiments in vivo form a basis for applying the current knowledge to human nutrition in the field of carcinogenesis. With contributions from leading experts in the field, this book is an invaluable resource for scientists and professionals working in cancer research, as well as individuals involved in food and nutrition.

Book Cancer Drug Resistance Research Perspectives

Download or read book Cancer Drug Resistance Research Perspectives written by Liman S. Torres and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main causes of failure in the treatment of cancer is the development of drug resistance by the cancer cells. The design of cancer chemotherapy has become increasingly sophisticated, yet there is no cancer treatment that is 100% effective against disseminated cancer. Resistance to treatment with anticancer drugs results from a variety of factors including individual variations in patients and somatic cell genetic differences in tumours, even those from the same tissue of origin. Frequently resistance is intrinsic to the cancer, but as therapy becomes more and more effective, acquired resistance has also become common. The most common reason for acquisition of resistance to a broad range of anticancer drugs is expression of one or more energy-dependent transporters that detect and eject anticancer drugs from cells, but other mechanisms of resistance including insensitivity to drug-induced apoptosis and induction of drug-detoxifying mechanisms probably play an important role in acquired anticancer drug resistance. Studies on mechanisms of cancer drug resistance have yielded important information about how to circumvent this resistance to improve cancer chemotherapy and have implications for pharmacokinetics of many commonly used drugs. This book presents new and important research in this field.
