Book Lying and Deception in Everyday Life

Download or read book Lying and Deception in Everyday Life written by Michael Lewis and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1993-02-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I speak the truth, not so much as I would, but as much as I dare...."-- Montaigne "All cruel people describe themselves as paragons of frankness.'" -- Tennessee Williams Truth and deception--like good and evil--have long been viewed as diametrically opposed and unreconcilable. Yet, few people can honestly claim they never lie. In fact, deception is practiced habitually in day-to-day life--from the polite compliment that doesn't accurately relay one's true feelings, to self-deception about one's own motivations. What fuels the need for people to intricately construct lies and illusions about their own lives? If deceptions are unconscious, does it mean that we are not responsible for their consequences? Why does self-deception or the need for illusion make us feel uncomfortable? Taking into account the sheer ubiquity and ordinariness of deception, this interdisciplinary work moves away from the cut-and-dried notion of duplicity as evil and illuminates the ways in which deception can also be understood as a adaptive response to the demands of living with others. The book articulates the boundaries between unethical and adaptive deception demonstrating how some lies serve socially approved goals, while others provoke distrust and condemnation. Throughout, the volume focuses on the range of emotions--from feelings of shame, fear, or envy, to those of concern and compassion--that motivate our desire to deceive ourselves and others. Providing an interdisciplinary exploration of the widespread phenomenon of lying and deception, this volume promotes a more fully integrated understanding of how people function in their everyday lives. Case illustrations, humor and wit, concrete examples, and even a mock television sitcom script bring the ideas to life for clinical practitioners, behavioral scientists, and philosophers, and for students in these realms.

Book Cognitive and Social Factors in Early Deception

Download or read book Cognitive and Social Factors in Early Deception written by Stephen J. Ceci and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding of early deception is important for both theoretical and practical purposes. Children's deceptive behaviors provide a window into their models and theories of mind. On a practical level, childhood deception poses challenges for the legal system as well as parents and schools. In this volume, contributors from diverse areas of psychology -- social, cognitive, and developmental -- as well as philosophy and law examine the determinants of deception among preschoolers. In addition to a wealth of new empirical findings dealing with gender, motivation, and context in children's use of deception, evidence is provided for recursivity of awareness in children as young as three years of age. With chapters and commentaries written by leading scholars in the United States, England, and Australia, this book reflects a growing concern with ecological validity in developmental studies and may prompt rethinking of traditional models of mind based exclusively on data from laboratory experiments.

Book Nonverbal Communication

Download or read book Nonverbal Communication written by Albert Mehrabian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though our society subtly discourages the verbal expression of emotions, most of us, in ostensibly conforming to our roles, nevertheless manage to express likes, dislikes, status differences, personalities, as well as weaknesses in nonverbal ways. Using vocal expressions; gestures, postures, and movements, we amplify, restrict, or deny what our words say to one another, and even say some things with greater facility and efficiency than with words. In this new, multidimensional approach to the subject of nonverbal communication Albert Mehrabian brings together a great deal of original work which includes descriptions of new experimental methods that are especially suited to this field, detailed findings of studies scattered throughout the literature, and most importantly, the integration of these findings within a compact framework. The framework starts with the analysis of the meanings of various nonverbal behaviors and is based on the fact that more than half of the variance in the significance of nonverbal signals can be described in terms of the three orthogonal dimensions of positiveness, potency or status, and responsiveness. These three dimensions not only constitute the semantic space for nonverbal communication, but also help to identify groups of behaviors relating to each, to describe characteristic differences in nonverbal communication, to analyze and generate rules for the understanding of inconsistent messages, and to provide researchers with new and comprehensive measures for description of social behavior. This volume will be particularly valuable for both the professional psychologist and the graduate student in psychology. It will also be of great interest to professionals in the fields of speech and communication, sociology, anthropology, and psychiatry.

Download or read book Book of Wisdom by John Gill written by James J Maccabbee Company and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Author John Gill (1697 - 1771) was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. In his youth, he attended Kettering Grammar School, mastering the Latin classics and learning Greek by age eleven. The young scholar also had a love for Hebrew which would follow him throughout his life. At about twelve years of age, Gill heard a sermon from his pastor, William Wallis, whose text came from Genesis 3:9, "And the Lord called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou?" He reflected often on the message of Wallis' sermon and it eventually led to his conversion. It was not until seven years later, however, that young John made a public profession of his faith in Christ, when he was almost nineteen years of age. His first pastoral work was as an intern at age twenty one, and he later became a pastor in Southwark, England. His pastorate lasted 51 years. Gill was an English Bible scholar, and a prolific writer who authored among other things, an expository commentary on the entire Bible. John Gill was a profound scholar whose ministry in some fashion still touches millions of people worldwide. About this Book Unlike human wisdom, the Book of Proverbs is of divine inspiration. The Book of Wisdom is presented as a devotional from John Gill's commentary on these Proverbs. Book of Wisdom is a tribute offered by the James J. MacCabbee Company to Pastor John Gills' lifetime of brilliant work. As Proverbs 8:1, "Doth not Wisdom cry?" This daily devotional is prepared for governmental leaders, leaders in the news and entertainment industries, clergy and laypersons; employees and employers; spouses, parents and children. In fact Wisdom is offered to "anyone who has ears to hear" (see Matthew 13:9). Those who receive such Wisdom as presented here will not be disappointed.

Entries are written in a clear and accessible style that invites readers to explore and reflect on the use of lying and self-deception. Each article concludes with cross references to related entries and further readings. This academic, multi-author reference work will serve as a general, non-technical resource for students and researchers within social and behavioral science programs who seek to better understand the historical role of lying and how it is employed in modern society.

Book The Sacred Art of SELF Deception

Download or read book The Sacred Art of SELF Deception written by Shadow Easton and published by Katana Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unmasking'Enlightenment': 'Spiritual Nonsense" Flips Spirituality on its Head!" Prepare yourself for a journey that’s equal parts enlightenment and irreverence; “Spiritual Nonsense – The Sacred Art of Self-Deception”. The first book in the BULLSHITTO series. If you’re expecting a book filled with solemn discourses on spiritual practices, brace for impact because this is not it. Crafted with wit sharper than a samurai’s blade, this book slices through the fluffy nonsense of the spiritual marketplace with unapologetic humor and a dash of sarcasm. Shadow and her co-conspirator in literary crime Lucas, have penned a manifesto for those weary of the spiritual hamster wheel. They start with a premise so simple it’s almost ridiculous: “There is only one thing, and YOU are it.” From there, the ride only gets wilder. Imagine a book that makes you laugh out loud while simultaneously dismantling your deeply held beliefs—this is that book. “Spiritual Nonsense” is your invitation to a party where the revered gurus, solemn practices, and esoteric jargon are turned on their heads. Expect to laugh until you cry, and then pause mid-giggle to ponder some unexpectedly deep truths. This book does not respect your beliefs; instead, it respects you too much to let you cling to them unexamined. Expect no paths to enlightenment, no secrets to unlocking your inner potential through high vibrations or positive thinking. Instead, get ready to challenge every notion you’ve ever had about spirituality, culture, and the pursuit of truth. Through a mix of provocative stories, insightful commentary, and outright mockery, the authors guide you on a quest not for answers, but for better questions. The authors use common terms like Consciousness, The Absolute, and Enlightenment not as destinations but as signposts on a journey where the only real direction is inward. “Spiritual Nonsense” is for the brave souls who can laugh at the cosmic joke of existence, for those willing to confront the illusions that comfort them, and for the adventurers eager to explore the depths of their own folly in the quest for TRUTH. Prepare to have your beliefs challenged, your preconceptions shattered, and your funny bone tickled. “Spiritual Nonsense – The Sacred Art of Self-Deception” is more than a book; it’s a spiritual detox, offering liberation not through solemn wisdom but through the joyful realization that, in the end, we might not know anything at all. So, if you’re ready to embark on the least serious spiritual journey of your life, where laughter is the only guru and every page turns your world a little more upside down, welcome to “Spiritual Nonsense.” Enlightenment has never been so much fun.

Book excerpt: "Honesty is clearly an important virtue. Parents want to develop it in their children. Close relationships typically depend upon it. Employers value it in their employees. Yet philosophers have said almost nothing about the virtue of honesty in the past fifty years. This book aims to draw attention to this surprisingly neglected virtue. Part One looks at the concept of honesty. It takes up questions such as what does honesty involve, what are the motives of an honest person, how does practical wisdom relate to honesty, and is there anything that connects all the different sides of honesty, including not lying, not stealing, not breaking promises, not misleading others, and not cheating. A central idea is that the honest person reliably does not intentionally distort the facts as she takes them to be. Part Two looks at the empirical psychology of honesty. It takes up the question of whether most people are honest, dishonest, or somewhere in-between. Drawing extensively on recent studies of cheating and lying in particular, the emerging model ends up implying that most of us have a long way to go to reach an honest character"--

Download or read book Satan s Secret written by D. A. Teunis and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-06-06 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author radically addresses conflicting denominational beliefs associated with established Christian doctrinal teachings including the immortality of the soul, hell-fire/eternal torment, miracles, God's Kingdom, prayer, the Trinity and the salvation and eventual resurrection of the entire human race. Then, through extensively detailed scriptural research he provides a thought provoking and inspirational conclusion attributing these differences to the true source of universal deception, Satan, the father of lies and beguilement. Other topics that reveal Satan's influence on Christian thought and moral character covers abortion, homosexuality, capital punishment, occultism and the heinous terrorist attacks perpetrated on a country known for its Christian values. These are covered at length, in detail and are explained in conjunction with the plan of God and it's revelation through an intense study of His Word. Being a devoted non-denominational Bible student with 30 years of experience and personal connections has its reward as these dilemmas are explained through the eyes of this movement's most knowledgeable leaders. The author enlightens the reader to "lost" unparalleled dimensions in thinking, slicing through traditional parameters and exposing the "truth" which has been hidden from the majority of the followers of Christ for so many centuries. "It's time the world is reintroduced to the God of eternal love and not the God of wrath and punishment", says the author. "Come, let us reason together!"
