Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolt of Democracy Like a watchman on a lonely tower, with keen vision and responsive mind and heart, Alfred Russel Wallace has observed more change and development of scientific and social opinion and a higher advance of the tide of knowledge across the shores of human speculation and ignorance than any living scientist. Yet, unlike that solitary watchman, he himself has been, and is, an active pioneer of scientific revelation. For a long time he was the voice of a system of truths so far ahead of the attainments of his generation that to his contemporaries much of his teaching seemed rank heresy and almost blasphemy; but, like a true prophet, he has had not only the patience but the opportunity given him to see most of his discoveries and his teachings incorporated into the stately palace of truth. When he was born in 1823, our world, as we know it to-day (a composite thing of multitudinous energies thirled to the service and utility of mankind) had scarcely come into existence. Book What Is Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Is Democracy Classic Reprint written by L. H. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Democracy? Revolt from tyranny is not democracy. This is the throwing-off of intolerable burdens that prevent democracy; and as democracy has been prevented, so is there no preparation for it and anarchy results. The tyrannized people go to excess, knowing not the civic restraint of self-discipline. Excess is the Oppo site of democracy. The red revolutions of past and present are the negation of democracy, although the released people may eventually become democratic. Democracy is more stable than despotism. Book The Irresistible Movement of Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Irresistible Movement of Democracy Classic Reprint written by John Simpson Penman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irresistible Movement of Democracy The object of this book is to tell the story of democracy from its first beginnings in the modern world until its culmination in our time. The idea was first suggested to me by trying to under stand what was meant by the famous phrase used during the world war, - to make the world safe for democracy. It sug gested the questions, What was democracy? What were the advantages of a form of government for which the world was striving? If democracy was attained, would it be a gain for humanity? Democracy has always been difficult of definition and much misunderstanding of its true nature has arisen because men have used the term in different senses. Democracy may mean either a spirit of society, a state of society, or a form of government. I have taken democracy in the usual meaning as accepted by Bryce, Lecky and Maine, as a form of popular government. In this general sense it has been used by modern writers, and its modern advent dates from the time when nations and men began to seek a form of government based upon the popular will as expressed in universal suffrage. Book The Rise of Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rise of Democracy Classic Reprint written by J. Holland Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Democracy Any inquiry into the course of democratic progress in England would be confessedly imsy and superficial which did not endeavour, however brie y, to indicate the nature of the movement in its earlier stages. Is English democracy of home growth, or does it owe its chief impulse to the cognate movement in France? Was it propelled onwards by a conscious striving after new ideals, or was it merely the result of discontent aroused by material discomforts and unjust laws? Did our Radical reformers claim that they were initiating a new era for humanity at large, or were they content with redressing the ills of the time? To these and similar questions it is hoped that this little work will furnish some reply, not, as a rule, explicitly and in set terms, but rather by means of an unbiassed narrative which will leave the reader free to draw his own conclusions as to the drift of events, the full significance of which cannot as yet be fully realized. And it has seemed to me that perhaps some of my countrymen, too, might be glad to consider, in this broadly general way, those national ideals which we have come to feel most indisputably our own, most surely and ineradicably native. Book The Revolt of The Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium

Download or read book The Revolt of The Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium written by Martin Gurri and published by Stripe Press. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How insurgencies—enabled by digital devices and a vast information sphere—have mobilized millions of ordinary people around the world. In the words of economist and scholar Arnold Kling, Martin Gurri saw it coming. Technology has categorically reversed the information balance of power between the public and the elites who manage the great hierarchical institutions of the industrial age: government, political parties, the media. The Revolt of the Public tells the story of how insurgencies, enabled by digital devices and a vast information sphere, have mobilized millions of ordinary people around the world. Originally published in 2014, The Revolt of the Public is now available in an updated edition, which includes an extensive analysis of Donald Trump’s improbable rise to the presidency and the electoral triumphs of Brexit. The book concludes with a speculative look forward, pondering whether the current elite class can bring about a reformation of the democratic process and whether new organizing principles, adapted to a digital world, can arise out of the present political turbulence.

Book The Destruction of Democratic Republicanism the Object of Rebellion The Testimony of Southern Witnesses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Destruction of Democratic Republicanism the Object of Rebellion The Testimony of Southern Witnesses Classic Reprint written by Loring Moody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destruction of Democratic Republicanism the Object of Rebellion: The Testimony of Southern Witnesses Comparatively few persons understand the real nature of the contest going on in this country, for the simple reason that only a few have been sufficiently jealous and watchful of the encroachments of power upon the rights and liberties of the people. The machinery of governments has generally been in the hands of despots. In other words, Despotism has wielded the powers and forces of governments for the accomplishment of its own tyrannical purposes. During the past few centuries Freedom has been growing strong with the advancing light of Christian civilization, - so strong that, at the time of the American Revolution, our Fathers wrested the reins of government in this country from the hands of Freedom; thus for the first time in all history, clothing Freedom with the powers and attributes of government, and, as most people have supposed, succeeded in driving Despotism entirely out of the country. But, though Despotism was tumbled from its throne, it still clung to the country, and was determined never to give up its right to rule here, as it had ruled everywhere else through all previous periods of history; and, although the revolutionary struggle left it comparatively weak, the slave power, fostered and cherished in the South, where it took refuge, nourished it into strength again, and it has attempted once more to seize the reins of government, and trample out the life-blood of Freedom as of old. Nothing could be more natural than that slavery should be the nursery and hot-bed propagator of Despotism. For Despotism and Slavery are as near akin to each other as sin and satan. So it has spent the whole time since the adoption of our present Constitution, in plotting and devising ways and means for the overthrow of our free government, determined to ruin where it could not rule. Despotism hates Freedom with "a perfect hatred," and has so hunted her down that she has never yet found a perfect resting-place for the sole of her foot on this planet. Book Two Tactics of Social Democracy in the Democratic Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Two Tactics of Social Democracy in the Democratic Revolution Classic Reprint written by Vladimir Ilich Lenin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Tactics of Social-Democracy in the Democratic Revolution In a revolutionary period it is very difficult to keep abreast of events, which provide an aston inshinrg amount of new material for an evaluation of the tactical slogans of revolutionary parties. The present pamphlet was written before the Odessa events.* We have already pointed out in Prolezfary2 (no. 9 Revolution Teaches'f) that these events have forced even those Social Democrats who created the uprising-as-a-proc ess theory and who rejected propaganda for a provisional revolutionary government actually to pass over, or begin to pass over, to the side of their opponents. Revolution undoubtedly teaches with a rapidity and thoroughness which appear incredible in peaceful periods of political develop ment. And, what is particularly important, it teaches not only the leaders, but the masses as well. The reference is to the mutiny on the armoured cruiser Prince Potemkin. Book National Populism

Download or read book National Populism written by Roger Eatwell and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crucial new guide to one of the most important and most dangerous phenomena of our time: the rise of populism in the West Across the West, there is a rising tide of people who feel excluded, alienated from mainstream politics, and increasingly hostile towards minorities, immigrants and neo-liberal economics. Many of these voters are turning to national populist movements, which pose the most serious threat to the Western liberal democratic system, and its values, since the Second World War. From the United States to France, Austria to the UK, the national populist challenge to mainstream politics is all around us. But what is behind this exclusionary turn? Who supports these movements and why? What does their rise tell us about the health of liberal democratic politics in the West? And what, if anything, should we do to respond to these challenges? Written by two of the foremost experts on fascism and the rise of the populist right, National Populism is a lucid and deeply-researched guide to the radical transformations of today's political landscape, revealing why liberal democracies across the West are being challenged-and what those who support them can do to help stem the tide.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy

Download or read book The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy written by Christopher Lasch and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1996-01-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text challenges American notions of democracy and ambition, culture and civic responsibility, charting a decline in democratic values and debate. It states that this change is due to the "new elites" who, having lost their sense of communitarianism, will not accept ties to nation and to place.
