Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, conceived the idea of extracting a gospel purified of what he saw as extraneous philosophical, mythological, and theological elements. To do so, he took verses from the four canonical gospels and arranged them into a single narrative, focusing on the actual words of Jesus. This work was never published during Jefferson's lifetime, but was inherited by his grandson and printed for the first time in the early twentieth century. The original bound manuscript, often referred to as "the Jefferson Bible," is held by the United States National Museum in Washington.

Book The Jefferson Bible Smithsonian Edition

Download or read book The Jefferson Bible Smithsonian Edition written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was Thomas Jefferson's effort to extract what he considered the pertinent doctrine of Jesus by removing sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. Using a razor, Jefferson cut and arranged selected verses from the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in chronological order, mingling excerpts from one text to those of another in order to create a single narrative. After completion of The Life and Morals, about 1820, Jefferson shared it with a number of friends, but he never allowed it to be published during his lifetime. The most complete form Jefferson produced was inherited by his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, and was published in 1895 by the National Museum in Washington. Once published in black-and-white facsimile by the Government Printing Office in 1900 as a gift for new members of Congress, the Jefferson Bible has never before been published in color in its complete form. The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition is an exact facsimile reproduction based on the original copy in the Smithsonian collections. The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition is as beautiful an object as was so painstakingly crafted by Thomas Jefferson himself.

Book excerpt: "In 1804, toward the end of his first term as president, Thomas Jefferson began working on a book that he knew he could never publish. It was an unconventional edit of the Bible [actually the New Testament gospels], and he called it simply, The Philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth. Jefferson believed that the words of Jesus were "the most benevolent code of morals which has ever been offered to man", and he wanted to study his teachings apart from the other parts of the Gospels. Although [he] abandoned the project for over a decade, he finally returned to it in 1819. [He] eliminated anything that he felt was unsupported by history or science, including the virgin birth, Jesus' miracles and the resurrection. He then rearranged the remaining passages chronologically and in parallel translations in English, French, Greek and Latin, combining parts of all four Gospels into a narrative that begins in Bethlehem with Jesus' birth and ends with his burial. [The book] includes [the] original English text as well as a new introduction that examines Jefferson's life and complicated religious beliefs. ..."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and times of a uniquely American testament In his retirement, Thomas Jefferson edited the New Testament with a penknife and glue, removing all mention of miracles and other supernatural events. Inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment, Jefferson hoped to reconcile Christian tradition with reason by presenting Jesus of Nazareth as a great moral teacher—not a divine one. Peter Manseau tells the story of the Jefferson Bible, exploring how each new generation has reimagined the book in its own image as readers grapple with both the legacy of the man who made it and the place of religion in American life. Completed in 1820 and rediscovered by chance in the late nineteenth century after being lost for decades, Jefferson's cut-and-paste scripture has meant different things to different people. Some have held it up as evidence that America is a Christian nation founded on the lessons of the Gospels. Others see it as proof of the Founders' intent to root out the stubborn influence of faith. Manseau explains Jefferson's personal religion and philosophy, shedding light on the influences and ideas that inspired him to radically revise the Gospels. He situates the creation of the Jefferson Bible within the broader search for the historical Jesus, and examines the book's role in American religious disputes over the interpretation of scripture. Manseau describes the intrigue surrounding the loss and rediscovery of the Jefferson Bible, and traces its remarkable reception history from its first planned printing in 1904 for members of Congress to its persistent power to provoke and enlighten us today.

Book The Jefferson Bible for the 21st Century

Download or read book The Jefferson Bible for the 21st Century written by Reading Desk, The and published by The Reading Desk. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible has many modern versions, either carefully constructed into English from a word-by-word or a thought-by-thought basis. The derivative works almost never get that level of attention. Thomas Jefferson rearranged the sermons, parables and teachings of Jesus into a chronological sequence - leaving out the miracles, angels, demons, and the resurrection. His belief was that the moral message of Jesus was still a supremely powerful one - capable of standing on its own. This volume is a modernized update that you can think of as the textbook for "Essential Jesus 101". Many notes about Thomas Jefferson's original book and a commentary on Deism are also included.

Download or read book Displacing Jesus written by Charles A. Wilson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Displacing Jesus studies the inner workings of Thomas Jefferson’s editing and shortening of the Gospels of the New Testament, The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth. It uncovers the immanent moves of his editorial project and shows how he makes judgments on what to include and exclude from the Gospels. As the book analyzes Jefferson’s gospel, it reconstructs his cut-and-paste project as a displacing of the biblical story of Jesus into a war on Jewish authorities. Ignoring nearly all traditional religious themes, the new gospel reframes the story into a battle against the narrow and hypocritical morality of the leaders of Second Temple Judaism. Surprisingly, Jefferson’s editing does provide a robust, if not traditional, theology and a Christology centered in the passion of the Shepherd-Sage who performs his death for Wisdom. Displacing Jesus ends by connecting Jefferson’s creation in The Life and Morals with theological themes, with the history of his views on religion, and with comments on how new insights into Jefferson’s gospel can inform contemporary Jefferson research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Jefferson was a brilliant, complicated and contradictory man. Often considered the most brilliant individual of America s Revolutionary War era, Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence, his nation s first diplomat abroad, the country s first secretary of state, its second vice president and third president of the United States. After James Madison succeeded him as president on March 4, 1809, Jefferson once again returned to Virginia, dedicating his last years to maintaining, building and re-building Monticello. It was during these years of reflection that he put together a volume he titled The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, popularly known as the Jefferson Bible. Completed in 1820, the 84-page compilation demonstrates Jefferson s struggle to understand the moral teachings of Jesus. Jefferson was born out of the Enlightenment, or the Age of Reason. The scholars of this era seriously questioned, and often abandoned, traditional faith and religious institutions in favor of new, budding ideas based on science and reason. In this book Jefferson turned his attention to the Holy Bible.

Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. 9 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 10 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 11 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 12 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the...
