Book Revelation of Jesus Christ

Download or read book Revelation of Jesus Christ written by Margaret Barker and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-11-02 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and transforming approach to the Book of Revelation. Margaret Barker bases her study on a fresh reading of the primary sources. As an Old Testament scholar, she can read Revelation as Hebrew prophecy - ancient temple oracles which inspired Jesus and his own prophecies, and influenced the whole Jerusalem Church. Jerusalem was waiting for their Great High Priest to return and complete the Atonement at the end of the Tenth Jubilee. This expectation fuelled the revolt against Rome. Josephus, who deserted to Rome, was the false prophet. John, who escaped to Patmos, compiled Revelation as a record of the first generation. In the future, he taught, the Lord would return to his people in the Eucharist. This work illuminates the formative years of Christianity, in the social, religious and political situation of mid-first-century Palestine, in a quite remarkable way. It will have profound implications for the understanding of Christian origins and the development of Christian liturgy.

Book excerpt: It could be that the entirety of creation, seen and unseen, as well as the whole of the Bible have pivoted upon a moment if time, a single decision, one response. With the weight, the enormity of what lay before Him crashing upon His mind, Jesus Himself in the garden of Gethsemane the night of His betrayal, asked the Father to change the plan. "Take this cup away from Me", He prayed. We don't know how long that desire remained, but the next thing He said was indeed the fulcrum of God's universal reconciliation. He prayed, "Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours be done". The choice was so challenging for Him that the scriptures say His sweat became bloody. Yet, with His mind thus set, He continued on to the cross.

Book excerpt: The book of Revelation pulls back the curtain to reveal the secrets of the past, present, and future, but nearly two thousand years after it was written it still seems to be shrouded in mystery. A Revelation of Jesus takes a fresh look at the familiar themes of Revelation such as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the mark of the beast, the battle of Armageddon, the Millennium, and many others, using the Bible itself as a guide to cut through the maze of confusion that so often surrounds these vital subjects. The last book of the Bible is not just a collection of enigmatic symbols and metaphors. Using symbolic language, it documents the cosmic struggle between good and evil that began with Satan's rebellion in heaven before the creation of the world. Author David Lackey seeks to unmask Satan's subtle deceptions and point readers to our Creator and Redeemer who will vanquish all evil and usher in a new existence characterized by love, joy, and peace. The purpose of this book is to unpack the prophecies of Revelation to reveal the beauty of Jesus so that in seeing Him more clearly we may fall in love with Him more than ever before and be ready for His soon return.

Book The Revelation of the Messiah

Download or read book The Revelation of the Messiah written by Caleb Friedeman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first two chapters of Luke, characters acknowledge Jesus as Messiah, Son of God, and Lord. Lukan characters also speak of John going before the Lord God, suggesting that Jesus might be the Lord in view, and connect Jesus with Old Testament YHWH passages. These features have made Luke 1-2 a key locus for discussions of Lukan Christology, generating speculation as to whether Luke presents Jesus as divine. However, they also create an apparent incongruity with the body of the Gospel. In Luke 3 and elsewhere, human characters are initially ignorant that Jesus is Messiah, Son of God, and Lord. Moreover, Jesus' divinity – if Luke affirms it – does not seem to be recognized until after the resurrection. In this study, Caleb Friedeman advances a new model for understanding the Christological relationship between Luke 1-2 and the rest of Luke-Acts, in which Luke presents these opening chapters as a Christological mystery.

Book The Little Book of Revelation

Download or read book The Little Book of Revelation written by Eli of Kittim and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fascinating study in search of the real Jesus. The author concludes that scripture is essentially a collection of prophecies, not a record of past events. Jesus did not say, "Blessed is he who heeds the words of the history of this book," but rather "Blessed is he who heeds the words of the prophecy of this book." Thus, the current tenets of Christianity with regard to the origin and advent of Jesus are based on fundamental misconceptions. The book´s argument is that Christ´s visitation has not yet occurred in the world of time, since it is a future event, and that his origin will be derived from the Greeks, not the Jews, when he does appear.

Book Revelations

  • Author : Elaine Pagels
  • Publisher : Penguin

Download or read book Revelations written by Elaine Pagels and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

Book Messianic Revelation in the Old Testament

Download or read book Messianic Revelation in the Old Testament written by Gerard Van Groningen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 1997-07-16 with total page 1029 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books by evangelical scholars on messianism in the Old Testament are either outdated, too brief, or lack balance,Ó observes the author. Messianic Revelation in the Old Testament represents the most thorough, conservative analysis of the century. Van Groningen traces the messianic expectation as it is progressively revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures. He first introduces the messianic concept, defining its terms and uncovering its source. He finds these messianic presentations rooted in, and shaped by, divine revelation. The major part of this volume explores messianism's philological, historical, and theological aspects. The result of this study,Ó writes the author, reveals that the messianic concept refers to a royal-priestly-prophetic person...and his work.Ó Passages that deal with these messianic motifs have been selected for close scrutiny and evaluation.Ó The author believes that a correct understanding of messianism in the Old Testament requires a balanced hermeneutical approach - from exegeting the relevant texts and studying their historical context to interpreting prophecy and organizing its theological truths. In the words of the author, To omit one [element] is to do injustice to the Old Testament.Ó Van Groningen has included an extensive bibliography of both books and articles for those wishing to pursue additional study. A Scripture index helps one to locate the author's exegetical insights on various passages. An index of persons concludes the work.

Book The Revelation of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Revelation of Jesus Christ written by Steven Sherman and published by . This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Revelation . . . in its Proper Context Too often the Western Church views Scripture from a Greek Mind-set within the context of a Hellenized society. The Church follows a pagan, Roman solar calendar which fashions a linear, compartmentalized interpretation of the Bible-especially the Book of Revelation. Contrary to this modernist approach, the prophets and writers of the New Testament wrote the Scriptures under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit from a Hebrew cultural context. The authors lived in accordance with the Torah and the lunar Hebrew calendar. The Hebrew historical view is cyclical and the Hebrew Mind-set encompasses a complete lifestyle. The Hebrew and Greek Mind-sets differ in practice. The Hebrew is concerned with action, the Greek with knowledge. Right conduct is the ultimate concern of the Hebrew, right thinking that of the Greek. This distinction is critical because it affects how the Book of Revelation is interpreted. The end-time chronology of the Book of Revelation is not a strict linear account as is often viewed from the Hellenistic Mind-set. Through a Hebrew narrative of spiraling pictures, Revelation gives an overview of the Apocalypse followed by specific details which unveil the future of the nation of Israel, unbelievers and the body of Messiah. The Revelation of Jesus Christ is a unique, verse-by-verse account of the Book of Revelation viewed from a Hebraic Mind-set.
