Book The Apocalypse of St John

Download or read book The Apocalypse of St John written by Lawrence R. Farley and published by . This book was released on 2005-12-07 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation has inspired controversy ever since it was written in the first century. It was the last book to be accepted into the New Testament canon, and today a myriad of mutually contradictory end-times speculations claim to be based on its teachings. Fr. Lawrence Farley provides a sober, patristic interpretation that reads Revelation in its proper context of Jewish apocalyptic literature. He demonstrates that the most important lesson we can learn from Revelation today is the need to remain faithful in a time of widespread hostility to the Christian faith.About the Orthodox Bible Study Companion Series This commentary series was written for the average layperson. Working from a literal translation of the original Greek, the commentary examines the text section by section, explaining its meaning in everyday language. Written from an Orthodox and patristic perspective, it maintains a balance between the devotional and the exegetical, feeding both the heart and the mind.

Book The Revelation of St John the Divine

Download or read book The Revelation of St John the Divine written by The Divine and published by . This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation is the final book of the New Testament. The title came into usage from the first word of the book in Koine Greek: apokalypsis, meaning "unveiling" or "revelation" (the author himself not having provided a title). It is also known as the Book of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine or the Apocalypse of John, (both in reference to its author) or the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ (in reference to its opening line) or simply Revelation, (often erroneously called "Revelations" in contrast to the singular in the original Koine) or the Apocalypse. The word "apocalypse" is also used for other works of a similar nature in the literary genre of apocalyptic literature. Such literature is "marked by distinctive literary features, particularly prediction of future events and accounts of visionary experiences or journeys to heaven, often involving vivid symbolism." The Book of Revelation is the only apocalyptic document in the New Testament canon, though there are short apocalyptic passages in various places in the Gospels and the Epistles.

Book John s Gospel and Intimations of Apocalyptic

Download or read book John s Gospel and Intimations of Apocalyptic written by Catrin H. Williams and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John's Gospel has traditionally been regarded as the least apocalyptic document in the New Testament. This exciting new collection redresses the balance by exploring the ways in which the apocalyptic literature of Second Temple Judaism has contributed to the theology and outlook of John's Gospel. Given that John, like the Jewish apocalyptic texts, is primarily concerned with the theme of revelation, the contributors examine how apocalyptic ideas can help to explain the Johannine portrayal of Jesus as the messenger sent from heaven to reveal the divine mysteries, as well as the Gospel's presentation of the activity of the Spirit, its understanding of evil, and the intended effects of this 'apocalypse in reverse' on its readers and hearers. The highly distinguished contributors include, John Ashton, Christopher Rowland, April DeConick, Judith Lieu and Jorg Frey.

(Luke 4:18; Science and Health xi:19-21.) All terms (synonyms) for Deity are capitalized. (I John 4:18; Science and Health 410:18-20.) Personal pronouns referring to Deity are capitalized. (Science and Health 516:24.) The titles for Christ Jesus also are capitalized. (Science and Health p. 499.) In parts ii and iii, references from the Bible and from Mrs. Eddy's writings are offered in connection with the words of Revelation. The number of them in any instance does not exceed four, therefore they are not exhaustive. In the order of references, the Bible is followed by Science and Health, then Mrs. Eddy's other writings. When there is a cross reference in Revelation it is given last. The line number in the reference is in harmony with the Concordances to Mrs. Eddy's writings. The numbers indicating page and line refer to the beginning of the explanatory citation. When a reference runs into a new paragraph on the following page the last line is indicated, e.g., Science and Health 111:26-15. The abbreviation n.p. for next page is used where it is needed. An asterisk indicates that use of the index will guide the student to further light on that subject in The Revelation of St. John, An Open Book. It is hoped that the citations will help the student to a clearer understanding of the Apocalypse. part I the text of the revelation of st. john printed in accord wi
