Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A romp-filled and refreshingly diverse historical romance."—Buzzfeed Paris, 1889 The Exposition Universelle is underway, drawing merchants from every corner of the globe…including Luz Alana Heith-Benzan, heiress to the Caña Brava rum empire. Luz Alana set sail from Santo Domingo armed with three hundred casks of rum, her two best friends and one simple rule: under no circumstances is she to fall in love. In the City of Lights, she intends to expand the rum business her family built over three generations, but buyers and shippers alike can’t imagine doing business with a woman…never mind a woman of color. This, paired with being denied access to her inheritance unless she marries, leaves the heiress in a very precarious position. Enter James Evanston Sinclair, Earl of Darnick, who has spent a decade looking for purpose outside of his father’s dirty money and dirtier dealings. Ignoring his title, he’s built a whisky brand that’s his biggest—and only—passion. That is, until he’s confronted with a Spanish-speaking force of nature who turns his life upside down. From their first tempestuous meeting, Luz Alana is conflicted. Why is this titled—and infuriatingly charming—Scottish man so determined to help her? For Evan, every day with Luz Alana makes him yearn for more than her ardent kisses or the marriage of convenience that might save them both. But Luz Alana sailed for Paris prepared to build her business and her future; what she wasn’t prepared for was love finding her. "Herrera excels at propelling the romance genre and its form forward, and this book is no exception... Download or read book A Return to Sanditon written by Anne Toledo and published by Anne Toledo. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For real lovers of Jane Austen "s work, a completion of her unfinished Sanditon as she might possibly have envisaged it herself. No zombies or other anachronistic gimmicks, but a number of interlaced love stories set against a gently satirical picture of the fads and fancies of the times, above all the rising fashion for sea bathing and the greed and folly that accompanied it.When Charlotte Heywood leaves her large and conservative family of Kentish landowners to stay with the Parkers in the new resort of Sanditon, she expects nothing more than a tranquil seaside holiday. She soon however becomes involved in the life of the little town, and is challenged to measure her own traditional values and tastes against those of financial speculators, affected social climbers, fashionable hypochondriacs, and followers of the new romantic ideas in the arts and human behaviour. Her initial attitude is that of an amused spectator, but soon, to her own surprise, she finds herself falling in love with her host "s younger brother, the witty and fascinating Sidney Parker. Sidney however leaves Sanditon abruptly in the company of Charlotte "s beautiful and enigmatic friend Clara Brereton, with whom Sir Edward Denham, penniless nephew of the town "s patroness and Sgreat lady , is in love, to his avaricious aunt "s displeasure, and the town buzzes with rumours of an elopement Anne Toledo has taught English Literature at university level for many years, specialising in the nineteenth-century novel in general, and in Jane Austen in particular. She is a devoted Janeite, and hopes that this story will appeal to those who share her love and appreciation of Jane Austen "s work at all levels “ as romance, as humorous observation, and as moral satire, and also as a fascinating picture of daily life in middle-class England in the years immediately following the Napoleonic wars.
Download or read book Life and Society in the Early Spanish Caribbean written by Ida Altman and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The half century of European activity in the Caribbean that followed Columbus’s first voyages brought enormous demographic, economic, and social change to the region as Europeans, Indigenous people, and Africans whom Spaniards imported to provide skilled and unskilled labor came into extended contact for the first time. In Life and Society in the Early Spanish Caribbean, Ida Altman examines the interactions of these diverse groups and individuals and the transformation of the islands of the Greater Antilles (Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Jamaica). She addresses the impact of disease and ongoing conflict; the Spanish monarchy’s efforts to establish a functioning political system and an Iberian church; evangelization of Indians and Blacks; the islands’ economic development; the international character of the Caribbean, which attracted Portuguese, Italian, and German merchants and settlers; and the formation of a highly unequal and coercive but dynamic society. As Altman demonstrates, in the first half of the sixteenth century the Caribbean became the first full-fledged iteration of the Atlantic world in all its complexity.
Download or read book The Cornish in the Caribbean written by Sue Appleby and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to look specifically at the movement of Cornish men and women to and from the Caribbean from the early days of colonialism. A fascinating subject for those with an interest in all things Cornish, be they in Cornwall, in the Caribbean, or in the wider Cornish diaspora. The Cornish in the Caribbean is the first study to tell the stories of some of the many Cornish men and women who went to the Caribbean. Some became wealthy plantation owners, while others came as indentured servants and labourers. Cornish men were active in the armed services, taking part in the numerous sea and land battles fought by the competing European powers throughout the region. Cornish officers and crew sailed on the ships of the Falmouth Packet Service which took the mail to and from the Caribbean. Methodism was strong in Cornwall and Methodist missionaries and their wives came to the Caribbean to evangelise both the enslaved and the newly free. The most striking transfer of Cornish skills to the Caribbean was to be found in mining. As Cornish mining declined, and the Great Emigration of miners and their families got underway, Cornish mining engineers, captains and miners went out to mines throughout the Caribbean. “Meticulously researched and highly readable” Bridget Brereton, Professor Emerita, University of the West Indies.

Download or read book Strolling in the Ruins written by Faith Smith and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Strolling in the Ruins Faith Smith engages with a period in the history of the Anglophone Caribbean often overlooked as nondescript, quiet, and embarrassingly pro-imperial within the larger narrative of Jamaican and Trinidadian nationalism. Between the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion and World War I, British imperialism was taken for granted among both elites and ordinary people, while nationalist discourses would not begin to shape political imagination in the West Indies for decades. Smith argues that this moment, far from being uneventful, disrupts the inevitability of nationhood in the mid-twentieth century and anticipates the Caribbean’s present-day relationship to global power. Smith assembles and analyzes a diverse set of texts, from Carnival songs, poems, and novels to newspapers, photographs, and gardens, to examine theoretical and literary-historiographic questions concerning time and temporality, empire and diaspora, immigration and indigeneity, gender and the politics of desire, Africa’s place within Caribbeanist discourse, and the idea of the Caribbean itself. Closely examining these cultural expressions of apparent quiescence, Smith locates the quiet violence of colonial rule and the insistence of colonial subjects on making meaningful lives.
