States of deliri um, and even mania, often supervene; but these are due to a disturbed nu tritton of the brain itself; either due to the watery and pale state of the blood, or to the irritation of the brain by retained urea. When you examine cases of this description after death, you find no evidence of recent serous inflammation, but only a pale state of the brain, which is of less than its normal bulk, and is surrounded with more subarachnoid fluid than is usual in the state of health.
