Claude Bernard that ether introduced into the stomach of an animal determines soon afterwards a considerable flow of pancreatic juice. The author preposes to take advantage of this in the treatment of phthisis, for the effect of the ether is to cause turgescence of the pancreas and of the intestinal glands, exactly as occurs in a healthy person during the digestion of food, so that we may hope to stimulate the glands to renew their health y action. Pure ether of the Pharmacopoeia should be used, and may be given in twenty minim doses mixed with two drachms of cod-liver oil three times a day. The ether very much disguises the taste of the oil. Tracheotomy tubes. - The tracheotomy tubes usually con structed are not sufficiently long to reach the trachea easily in the living subject, and the consequence is that they occa sionally slip out during the act of coughing or swallowing, and if the surgeon is not at hand, death may ensue. The tubes should be made half as long again as those ordinarily employed. The two blades of the outer canula should be made so that they lie in close apposition at their distal extrem ities, and are separated only by the introduction between them of the ihus'i' canula.
