Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 50: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July December, 1864 This sponge is intended to take up the urine by capillary attraction, and convey it through the tube. Over the end of the tube an india-rubber receptacle for the urine may be tied. (mr. J. Hutchinson, p. Lithotom/y in the Female - Dilatation of the urethra in the female may be effected very easily and safely, by passing into the urethra. A number of pieces of catgut bougie, about four inches long, as many as can be introduced conveniently. They may be secured in position by a thread tied round them, and attached to a bandage which, passing over the os externum, has a slit in it to admit the bougies, and is tied at either end to another bandage round the waist. The bougies becoming swelled, dilate the passage in the gentlest and most gradual manner. Additional bougies may be added, in such numbers and at such intervals as is found to be desirable. The fresh bougies must be oiled, and inserted between those that are already there. The dilatation usually takes between twenty four and forty-eight hours. (dr. G. M. Humphry, p. Lately bromide of ammonium has been introduced, and has been found of much use in some cases of the disease. For infants, two or three grains three times a day is a proper dose; for older children, from four to eight grains. The simpler the vehicle the better. (dr. G. D. Gibb, p. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 46: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December 1862 In bloodletting you are wielding a dangerous, but in some cases a necessary weapon. When it should be employed and when not, is one of the most important questions in clinical medicine. We must judge of the necessity for this treatment by the balance between the heart and the arteries. If the apex of the heart strikes strong, while the pulse at the wrist is defective, act free] y and confidently. If, on the contrary, the ventricles are weak while the pulse is full, large, and rap ping, be cautious what you do, and if you draw blood at all, let it be by cupping the chest. Remember that the pathology of the disease is a temporary death of a portion of the lungs, and that the action of bloodletting is purely mechanical Position is of great importance. When the elasticity of the vessels is lowered by disease, the blood gravitates towards the lowest part of the viscus. Let the patient, therefore, lie on the side Opposite to that affected, that thus gravitation may tend to withdraw the congestion from the weaker point. If both lungs are affected posteriorly, the patient may lie on the face for a time. Never give purgatives in pneumonia. A patient with constipated bowels will do better than one with the Opposite state. (dr. T. K. Chambers, p. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 27: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; January-June, 1853 Sarcina ventriculi. - One indication necessary to be ful filled in the treatment of this disease is to destroy the fungus by a regular and systematic exhibition of alkalies, thereby removing the acidity so essential to its formation and development, and then to employ some remedy capable of destroying its growth. This may be done by giving bicarbonate of potash and infusion of quassia, and afterwards the sulphite of soda. The operation of this salt seems to be that the sulphite being decomposed in the stomach by the acids therein generated, sulphurous acid gas is liberated, the destructive effects of which upon parasitic formations like the sarcina is well known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 28: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December, 1853 The specific gravity of a cubic inch of air is '185, that of water is 1000, and that of blood 1050. Forty cubic inches of air weigh about 12980 grains; the same amount of blood weighs about grains. Thus, the latter fluid is somewhat 865 times heavier than air; or, as '185 is to 1050. The amount of air, as it passes into the lungs, is op posed by a column of blood coming from the heart, in the proportion of one inspiration to four pulsations of the right ventricle. Each inspira tion carries into the pulmonary cells 40 cubic inches of air, and the average number of inspirations in an adult is 20 per minute. Each ventricular contraction throws two ounces of venous blood into the pull monary cells; and, as there are four contractions to one inspiration, about eight ounces of blood is therefore dispersed through the pulmonary capillaries, from minute to minute. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 88: Being a Half-Yearly Journal Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December, 1883 F The subsequent history of the case may be shortly summarised. There was never the slightest pain or discomfort in the joint at any time. On the fourth day, the dressing was changed, the joint looking, perhaps, a little fuller than its fellow, but there ms no trace of inflammatory change, and the wound was quite aseptic. The deep dressing was slightly stained with the int oozing. The dressing was renewed on the tenth day, and all the superficial sutures were removed. The wound was uncovered again on the nineteenth day, and found to be quite healed. The dressing was discontinued. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 42: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences Mr. Spencer Wells records some good cases of Ovariotomy, and warns us against the too common exhibition of opium in, the after treatment. He says that opium, and not the operation itself, is sometimes the cause of death; and in other cases stimulants, too incautiously given, have done as much harm as opium. At. The same time starvation and purgatives may be equally objectionable. One great secret of success in the after-treatment of these cases is perfect rest, in a well-ventilated room.
