Book The Retention of Black Males in Ninth Grade

Download or read book The Retention of Black Males in Ninth Grade written by Tracy Smith and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, more students are being retained in the ninth grade than in any other year in their K-12 school experience. In addition, African American males are retained more than any other group. Studies show that when students, especially African American males, are retained in ninth grade there is an increased probability that they will drop out and consequently, fail to graduate from high school. The limitation of the majority of the prior studies on ninth grade retention is their focus on urban districts. Thus, it is unknown if the probability of ninth-grade retention and the impact of that setback is significant in suburban, integrated settings where African Americans make up smaller, yet emerging percentage of the student population. While the gravity of these issues is documented, there have been few studies on the barriers to the academic success of African American students in suburban, integrated environments. The purpose of this study is to examine the ninth grade experiences of African American males in a high school in a suburban community of New York City.

Book excerpt: This phenomenological, qualitative study examined the educational experiences and barriers to college entrance for Black males in the 9th grade attending urban high schools in South Los Angeles and Pasadena. Research shows that when afforded equitable college access resources and supports, Black males retain and achieve in higher education equal to or better than their minoritized peers in the college setting. However, according to national data, Black males are beset with a myriad of college-going challenges including low-quality schools, low teacher expectations, and limited access to the aspects of college readiness. Although Black males aspire to attend college at rates comparable to their racial peers, they are the least likely to be enrolled in college-preparatory courses, i.e. Honors and Advanced Placement. Particularly, Black ninth-graders are most likely to be enrolled in math courses that are below Algebra 1. Student trajectory to college and likelihood to drop out is effectively predicted by the completion of freshman courses. Approximately 20% of students who repeat freshman year complete high school in six years. College access programs, equipped with mentorship, culturally relevant pedagogy, and identity development act as a crucial intervention measure that has the potential to increase high school matriculation. Furthermore, increasing high school matriculation and college enrollment is the first step in securing better mental health conditions and overall living conditions for Black males. The research questions were answered through focus groups and in-depth interviews with students who participated in an academic summer program, administered via Zoom in Los Angeles, CA. The college access program analyzed in this study also sent Black undergraduate men and women at a flagship California university to high schools and conducted college mentoring and counseling aimed to increase student access. The findings from this research recommend an increase in early college access supports for Black males and culturally competent approaches to preparing teachers to engage with Black males. The overall goal of this dissertation was to assist education researchers and practitioners address the unique needs of Black males in pursuit of higher education-ultimately making schools and other social institutions more nourishing environments for Black life.

Book Black Male Collegians Increasing Access Retention and Persistence in Higher Education

Download or read book Black Male Collegians Increasing Access Retention and Persistence in Higher Education written by Robert T. Palmer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving college access and success among Black males has garnered tremendous attention. Many social scientists have noted that Black men account for only 4.3% of the total enrollment at 4-year postsecondary institutions in the United States, the same percentage now as in 1976. Furthermore, two thirds of Black men who start college never finish. The lack of progress among Black men in higher education has caused researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to become increasingly focused on ways to increase their access and success. Offering recommendations and strategies to help advance success among Black males, this monograph provides a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of factors that promote the access, retention, and persistence of Black men at diverse institutional types (e.g., historically Black colleges and universities, predominantly White institutions, and community colleges). It delineates institutional policies, programs, practices, and other factors that encourage the success of Black men in postsecondary education. This is the 3rd issue of the 40th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Book The Impact of Problem based Learning on Ninth grade African American Male Disengagement in High School

Download or read book The Impact of Problem based Learning on Ninth grade African American Male Disengagement in High School written by Marvin Terrel York and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the growing numbers of African American males who are becoming disengaged from school. This disengagement can take many forms from being suspended from school, voluntarily not attending school, to the ultimate disengagement - dropping out of school. Research in the field of education sheds light on the seriousness of the disengagement of the African American male and its impact. The effects include, but are not limited to, enormous amounts of time spent out of school, an increased dropout rate, a widening of the achievement gap, less spending power, and increased unsupervised time which could ultimately lead to the male encountering the legal system. The researcher conducted a literature review in an attempt to determine strategies that created an engaging learning environment. Finally, this dissertation was undertaken to determine whether or not active learning strategies like problem-based learning create an environment that increases student engagement. -- This study was conducted in an urban high school in the western part of the state of North Carolina. As of the 2010-2011 school year, the school had a population of approximately 1,834 students and approximately 142 teachers. Of the total enrollment, 63% were African American, 7% were Asian, 16.1% were Hispanic, 3.1% were Multi-Racial, .5% were Native American, and 10.3% were White. At the start of the 2011-2012 school year, 3.4% of students were labeled as Gifted and Talented, 11.8% had a learning disability, and 10.9% were classified as Limited English Proficient. At the end of the 2010-2011 school year, 74.8% of students received free or reduced lunch. Of the approximately 142 teachers, 46.2% had bachelor's degrees and 46.2% also had master's degrees, 70.1% of the teachers had earned career status, and 11.5% of the teachers had earned National Board Certification. The school had a graduation rate of 70.5% and did not make adequate yearly progress in math for the year 2010-2011. -- Data were collected through the use of surveys and district data. Consequently, the researcher sought to determine whether a strategy like problem-based learning would create an environment that decreases the amount of suspensions and increases the graduation rate. Data collected revealed that there was some statistical significant difference in the treatment group's dispositions toward education, but not enough to be considered meaningful. There was no statistical significant difference in the students' suspension rates or attendance rates, but there was some statistical significant difference between the control group's scores and treatment group's scores on the summative science assessment, but not enough to be considered meaningful.

Book Supporting Activist Practices in Education

Download or read book Supporting Activist Practices in Education written by Ramsay-Jordan, Natasha N. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's educational landscape, a pressing issue looms: deeply entrenched within the system are the prevailing cultural norms that have historically perpetuated the dominance of white, middle-class values. This has, in turn, marginalized and stigmatized traditionally underrepresented student cultures as inherently deficient. As the United States educational system grapples with a dramatic increase in low-income, non-white, and linguistically diverse students, now is the time to confront these inequalities that undermine student achievement. This challenge has thrust teachers into the forefront, compelling them to embrace social justice practices in their classrooms as counternarratives. Supporting Activist Practices in Education emerges as a timely and essential solution to address this educational conundrum. Within the pages of this book, a compelling narrative unfolds—one that delves deep into the experiences of educators who actively employ teaching as a form of activism, transcending traditional norms. Teaching through activism, as defined in this volume, represents the courageous actions of educators who champion participatory citizenship for social justice within their classrooms, nurturing environments that foster critical thinking about the world. This book emphasizes the imperative of challenging and dismantling systemic injustices, and it underscores the pivotal role of social justice as a framework for effective pedagogical practices.
