    Book Details:
  • Author : George Rowell
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1984-10-18
  • ISBN : 9780521319195
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book The Repertory Movement written by George Rowell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-10-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an account of the origins, development and current state of the repertory theatre movement in Britain. The movement had its roots in ideas, experiments and traditions stretching back into the nineteenth century, and first found its voice in 1907 with Miss Horniman's company in Manchester. Since then it has played a vital - often a dominant - role in British twentieth-century theatre. As a method of theatre organisation, repertory refers to those theatres based primarily in the regions, housing a resident acting company and seeking to maintain each season a programme of plays catering for the tastes of the whole community. But the theory has never been dogmatic and the movement has evolved from a gamut of complex factors, not least the visions of particular personalities. Major landmarks in the history include the effects of the two World Wars, the advent of substantial state funding for the Arts, the growth of cinema and television and the renewal of theatre's link with the community in the form of such initiatives as Theatre- in-Education. The history concludes with a detailed study of six representative regional theatres: The Nottingham Playhouse; The Citizens' Theatre, Glasgow; The Salisbury Playhouse; The Victoria Theatre, Stoke; The Everyman, Liverpool; and The Royal Exchange, Manchester. Appendixes include a Chronology, sample repertory programmes from the period, audience attendance figures and some comparative statistics about funding. Interspersed through the text are photographs of selected theatre exteriors, auditoria, stages and productions.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Aphra Behn

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Aphra Behn written by Derek Hughes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-25 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally known as the first professional woman writer in English, Aphra Behn has now emerged as one of the major figures of the Restoration. She provided more plays for the stage than any other author and greatly influenced the development of the novel with her ground-breaking fiction, especially Love-Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister and Oroonoko, the first English novel set in America. Behn's work straddles the genres: beside drama and fiction, she also excelled in poetry and she made several important translations from French libertine and scientific works. This Companion discusses and introduces her writings in all these fields and provides the critical tools with which to judge their aesthetic and historical importance. It also includes a full bibliography, a detailed chronology and a description of the known facts of her life. The Companion will be an essential tool for the study of this increasingly important writer and thinker.

Book Between Theater and Anthropology

Download or read book Between Theater and Anthropology written by Richard Schechner and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In performances by Euro-Americans, Afro-Americans, Native Americans, and Asians, Richard Schechner has examined carefully the details of performative behavior and has developed models of the performance process useful not only to persons in the arts but to anthropologists, play theorists, and others fascinated (but perhaps terrified) by the multichannel realities of the postmodern world. Schechner argues that in failing to see the structure of the whole theatrical process, anthropologists in particular have neglected close analogies between performance behavior and ritual. The way performances are created—in training, workshops, and rehearsals—is the key paradigm for social process.

Book excerpt: Theatre: Its Art and Craft is intended for use in theatre appreciation and introduction to theatre courses. This new edition features updated statistics and references that keep the text current. The first chapter of the text introduces readers to the broad issues of artistic practice, while the second chapter inspects the specific area of live theatre. The remainder of chapters examine in detail the various functionaries of the theatre (audience, critics, playwrights, directors, actors, designers, historians, and dramaturgs). As in previous volumes, readers are encouraged to examine the complex interaction of all theatrical elements. Just as in music some instruments supply the basic structure and some embellish that structure, so in the theatre the elements of script, directing, acting, and design interact in shifting configurations to offer a new work of art at every performance. Examining these relationships will enrich the theatrical experience. A Collegiate Press book

Book The Restoration Stage Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Restoration Stage Classic Reprint written by John I. McCollum Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Restoration Stage Sir William Davenant was able to keep the theater alive in London by gain ing quiet permission from Puritan officials to stage private performances at Rutland House. The most notable presentation during the interim was his Siege of Rhodes reflecting the French influence and representing the beginning of the heroic drama - a form that Dryden and Howard were to employ so successfully after the Restoration. Davenant's contribution to the English theater is a significant one. He was a bridge from the older Elizabethan Jacobean tradition, as well as a major entrepreneur and a highly imaginative innovator. Whereas men and boys had previously taken the female roles, Davenant introduced women upon the public stage. He also borrowed the use of elaborate scenery from the court masques, and further increased variety in his plays by adding music. After the Restoration, Charles II granted a patent to Davenant in 1660 to produce plays at the Salisbury Court Theatre as the Duke of York's Company. At the same time Thomas Killigrew was granted a similar patent to form a company as the King's Men at the Theatre Royal. Thus the theater was re stored and a stimulating and lively era was under way. During the next twenty two years these two theaters became rivals for the small London audiences. A capacity audience for one house often meant empty seats in the other. Finally, in 1682, the Duke's Company absorbed the King's Men to form the United Company, and for the next thirteen years it alone provided London's drama. The era was. Nevertheless a significant one in theater structure and in stage practice, a period of inspired acting and celebrated personalities. Charles II himself provided royal patronage for the theater: often in the audience and intimate with the players, he mediated between conflicting wrongs, and even outfitted the players from his own wardrobe. The court, the new theaters and scenery, the histrionic power of the actors, the charm and appeal of the actresses all made the theater a glittering affair. It is no wonder that Pepys was so often drawn to the playhouses in spite of the pressures of business, the pull of ambition, and the restraint and condemnation of his conscience.
