The reader's considerate judgment is requested upon all de ficiencies and omissions, beyond those which have been compelled by the necessity for condensation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Profile of American Politics: Readings in American Government If government of the people, by the people and for the people is the most ex citing form of government in the world, and we believe it is, the study Of American government should itself be an exciting experience. Convinced Of this, we have taken measures to make this collection Of essays lively, interesting and timely. Since American democracy is a dynamic and ever-changing phenomenon we have focused upon essays which reveal the active elements of political decision without neglecting readings which deal with the legal and formal structure Of decision. The very title, Profile of American Politics, suggests our bias toward the dynamic factors. Our approach emphasizes political, economic and moral factors without overlooking legal, constitutional, historical and other essential ingredients in politics. Book American Political History

Download or read book American Political History written by Viola A. Conklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Political History: To the Death of Lincoln Every book, it has been said, should have a preface wherein is offered an apology for presenting another literary venture. The excuse for this volume is the newly awakened interest in our country's past. It owes its origin to a course of parlor lectures which resulted from the remark of a cultured woman who entered actively into the opportunities of her New York life. I have attended, she declared, parlor classes for the study of the great men, the historical epochs, the music, the art, the literature, and even the drama of nearly every land of Europe, but remain lamentably ignorant of the history of my own country. Write a course of lectures upon the political history of the United States and I promise to form a class of women all as ill-in formed as I am, and equally anxious to learn. It was an appeal that demanded compliance, and the interest aroused by the lectures suggested a fuller treatment of the subject in a more permanent form. The thanks of the author are due to Professor E. G. Bourne, of Yale University, for some suggestions made after reading the manuscript. The book is sent forth in the hope that it will meet the demand for a concise ac count of our political history, and that it may prove of value to the man who votes, and to the woman who often influences the voter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Those American R's: Rule, Ruin, Restoration As regards the romantic part of this story I would say that its object is only to lead you on to more solid things - to truth. The politics of this volume, I trust, is such that I will be regarded a Republican by the Democrats, and a Democrat by the Republicans, and by honest men as neither. If I shall rouse you to think of better things than you do now, if I shall awake a single slumbering virtue of the human heart, if I shall flash one mere spark of patriotism, if I shall raise a laugh or wake a tear - I shall feel my labors abundantly rewarded. Download or read book Insurgent Democracy written by Michael J. Lansing and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1915, western farmers mounted one of the most significant challenges to party politics America has seen: the Nonpartisan League, which sought to empower citizens and restrain corporate influence. Before its collapse in the 1920s, the League counted over 250,000 paying members, spread to thirteen states and two Canadian provinces, controlled North Dakota’s state government, and birthed new farmer-labor alliances. Yet today it is all but forgotten, neglected even by scholars. Michael J. Lansing aims to change that. Insurgent Democracy offers a new look at the Nonpartisan League and a new way to understand its rise and fall in the United States and Canada. Lansing argues that, rather than a spasm of populist rage that inevitably burned itself out, the story of the League is in fact an instructive example of how popular movements can create lasting change. Depicting the League as a transnational response to economic inequity, Lansing not only resurrects its story of citizen activism, but also allows us to see its potential to inform contemporary movements.

This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Degradation of Our Representative System and Its Reform Whatever may be the result of the bloody war now raging, it is presumed there is no one who does not see that it has already given such a shock to our republican institutions, that they will require great and important modifications, if not a reconstruction from their very foundation. Many changes must be made, both to give the requisite strength to the general Government, and to prevent that strength being abused; to consolidate the restored or diminished confederacy, and, at the same time, to save our local institutions, our personal liberties, from extinction; above all, to guard us, if possible, from the evils we have experienced in our system of election for National offices, especially, that of President of the United States; evils which will be greatly augmented in the inevitable consequence of the present war, - the enormous military power of the Executive. Book Power and Democracy in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Power and Democracy in America Classic Reprint written by Peter F. Drucker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power and Democracy in America Professors Peter Drucker, Delbert Miller, and Robert Dahl approach this problem from very distinct vantage points, and this is clearly reflected in the content Of their argument. Thus, the reader is treated to a spectrum of opposing views by a constitutional lawyer, a sociologist, and a political scientist. If there is little apparent agree ment among them, there is at least a sharpening of focus on the major facets of the problem Of individual freedom and decision-making in contemporary American society. The discussion opens with a paper by Professor Drucker on Individual Freedom and Effective Government in a Society Of super-powers. In bold, sweeping strokes, Drucker outlines the dramatic change that has occurred in the world since 1900, the change in the power-structure and power-dynamics Of society. He briefly delineates some of the major dilemmas that have arisen to face us as a result Of this change - dilemmas which are worldwide in scope. The heart of his discussion is the effect of this change on the federal and local levels of government in the United States, and the consequences for the individual citizen. The fol lowing questions form the focus Of his attention: 1) How to restore effectiveness to government; (2) How to prevent interest-group power - centers from usurping governmental functions; and (3) How to safeguard and strengthen the freedom Of the person. Richard Vaux, at the Girard College, on Fourth of July, 1861 From whatever standpoint we make the survey, these facts and the philosophy of their existence become the most striking of all the phenomena. They have had an existence, or exist. The causes which produced them are part of themselves, either subjective. Or objective, anterior or contemporaneous. Like mountains rising from the sea, yet it is demonstrated that they have foundations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Orations: Studies in American Political History; Edited With Introductions As a teacher of American history, I have found no more luminous texts on our political history than the speeches of the great men who have been able, in their discussions of public questions, to place before us a contem porary record of the history which they them selves were helping to make. To the careful student the secondary authorities can never supply the place of the great productions, the messages and speeches, which historic occasions have called forth. The earnest historical reader will approach these orations, not with the de sign of regarding them merely as specimens of eloquence or as studies in language, but as in dicating the great subjects and occasions of our political history and the spirit and motives of the great leaders Of that history. The orations lead the student to a review of the great strug gles in which the authors were engaged, and to new interest in the science of government from the utterances and permanent productions ofviii prefa CE TO the RE vised edition.
