Book excerpt: For at least the last 100 years, more than 40% of all students who enrolled in American colleges and universities have not persisted to graduation at four-year institutions. Their stories are varied, but in every case, something got in the way of that pursuit. Life happened. They became one of the nearly 36 million Americans who have some college but no degree. For many, the stigma of not finishing college is a closely held secret that weighs heavily as they discuss, engage, and compete to meet the challenges of the workforce in the 21st century. Some weren’t ready at age 18 for the focus and commitment that academic studies require. Others found opportunities to create income and meet immediate familial needs or requirements. Many have excelled despite their lack of a college credential. Contrary to the deficit mindset that often permeates the retention and persistence discourse, this book highlights the stories of those who successfully returned to what was left unfinished. The stories here may challenge your assumptions. These are high-quality students who demonstrated a compelling and inspiring commitment to their education, begun long ago and now completed—in some cases decades later. As you read, don’t miss the role that engaged advisors, supportive family members, and well-designed programs such as prior learning assessment played in helping students to the finish line. These narratives also demonstrate that it is time for institutions of higher education to imagine and embrace new ways of serving these students well.

Book The Return of Near completers to Higher Education for Degree Completion

Download or read book The Return of Near completers to Higher Education for Degree Completion written by Marsha J. Hare and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract At the bachelor's level, there exist a number of former students who have successfully completed a considerable portion of their degree and have earned a significant number of credits. They have put a significant investment toward the earning of their degree and many have come within one semester of degree completion. As former students, they have made a substantial investment in their education in both time and money, as have the institution and state. These students are referred to as near-completers. This study applies Schlossberg's Adult Transition Theory framework phases of moving in - moving through - moving out to examine the experiences of near-completers as they make the decision to return and complete their degrees. Adult Transition Theory is applied here to examine persistence with an appreciative inquiry approach. Narrative inquiry methodology was utilized to examine the stories of students returning to complete their degrees, resulting in the identification of themes to illuminate individual and organizational factors that that influenced former near-completers' return and contributed to their successful degree completion. It is through the lens of adult transition theory that staff and administrators can be made aware of what's working with adult students and focus their resources to create the appropriate assistance programs for this specific population. Analysis of the stories of near-completers highlighted the importance of anchoring completion narratives in stories of the initial departure from the higher education institution. In addition, the narratives illuminated the complexity of the transition experience, and provided more nuanced understanding of the ways in which adult transition theory could be expanded from the current integrative model, last updated in 1995.

Book Adults Returning to College

Download or read book Adults Returning to College written by Shirley A. Roddy and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increase in the past few years of working adults returning to college to complete their baccalaureate degree in a non-traditional format. Because the cost, in both time and resources, is significant, it seemed prudent to study the outcomes of these adult students. The purpose of this study was to determine adult student expectations in relation to educational outcomes and benefits experienced. Research on the traditional-age college student suggests that extending one's education beyond high school by attending college and obtaining a bachelor's degree is beneficial to both the individual and to society. However, because of the paucity of research specific to the adult segment of the college population, it was not known if the same was true for the adult population. It is for this reason that a grounded theory approach was taken.

Book Mature Age Male Students in Higher Education

Download or read book Mature Age Male Students in Higher Education written by Madeleine Mattarozzi Laming and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the unique set of challenges faced by mature-age male undergraduates as they adapt to university study. The authors examine the motivations of mature male students for enrolling in higher education and their aspirations for life after graduation, in doing so filling a crucial gap in the current literature. Later access to higher education carries numerous benefits, including improved social mobility: it is therefore paramount to understand why men tend to be underrepresented among mature students. Exploring the intersections of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, culture and gender, and paying careful attention to the stories of the students themselves, the authors provide a thought-provoking analysis of an underrepresented student group. The book will be of interest and value to students and scholars of mature-age male students, and aspirations and motivations within higher education more generally.
