Book A B Simpson and the Pentecostal Movement

Download or read book A B Simpson and the Pentecostal Movement written by Charles Nienkirchen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Based on impressive research, the author has offered the spiritual heirs of A. B. Simpson, as well as the larger church world, an accurate interpretation of Simpson's spiritual pilgrimage. The information about Simpson's belief in speaking in tongues and the ministries of those who remained or left the Alliance over the issue, provides valuable insights into the close relationship between the organization and emerging Pentecostal movement."" -- Gary B. McGee Professor of Church History, Assemblies of God Theological Seminary ""It is good news indeed that Charles Nienkirchen's A. B. Simpson and the Pentecostal Movement is being republished. This is a very important and well written work which sheds light not only on A. B. Simpson's quest for the tongues-attested baptism in the Holy Spirit but on the milieu surrounding the early spread of Pentecostalism in America and especially in the Christian and Missionary Alliance. This is a historical treasure."" --Vinson Synan, Dean Emeritus Regent University School of Divinity ""Simpson has long deserved an in-depth study. A pivotal turn-of-the-century figure who never found full acceptance in any wing of American evangelicalism, this prolific Canadian nonetheless profoundly influenced popular evangelicalism and Anglo-American Pentecostalism. Nienkirchen makes careful use of long-unused primary sources to illuminate Simpson's relationship to early Pentecostalism. The result is a suggestive work that offers perceptive insights into early Pentecostalism and the context from which it emerged."" -- Edith L. Blumhofer Project Director Institute for the Study of American Evangelicalism, Wheaton ""Nienkirchen provides a splendid study of the relationship of A. B. Simpson to Pentecostalism. This book demonstrates wide knowledge of primary materials and great care in documentation (with about one-third of the text devoted to footnote material). Nienkirchen clearly delineates the major elements in Simpson's religious thought and gives attention to the most significant ways in which his thought changed. His major interest in this book focuses on the ways in which Simpson influenced the formation of early Pentecostalism. Pentecostals accept some elements of Simpson's teaching and rejected or modified others, but Nienkirchen argues persuasively the case for Simpson's importance in understanding Pentecostalism; moreover, he clearly illustrates specific ways -- both direct and indirect -- in which that influence was felt in the complex story of early holiness-pentecostal relationships."" -- William Pitts Professor of Church History Baylor University ""Charles Nienkirchen has supplied those interested in the history and theology of American Evangelicalism, the Christian and Missionary Alliance, or the Pentecostal movement with an invaluable reference tool and an interpretive lens through which to understand them. This 'must-read' has shown its worth by remaining as relevant, informative and provocative as when it first went to press."" --Bernie A. Van De Walle Associate Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology Ambrose University College and Seminary Calgary, AB ""In A. B. Simpson and the Pentecostal Movement, Charles Nienkirken has combined prodigious research with mastery of historical and theological sources to produce a superb study of Simpson's relationship with early pentecostalism. This is a most important and useful work."" -- Randall Balmer Barnard College, Columbia University Charles W. Nienkirchen, PhD (University of Waterloo) is Professor of Christian History and Spirituality at Ambrose University College in Calgary, Canada and Visiting Professor of Christian Spirituality at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto, Canada. He has been a Scholar in Residence at Oxford University in England and Tantur Ecumenical Institute in Jerusalem as well as Visiting Professor in Residence at Tamilnadu Theological Seminary in Madurai, South India. Book Cultural Integration and the Gospel in Vietnamese Mission Theology

Download or read book Cultural Integration and the Gospel in Vietnamese Mission Theology written by KimSon Nguyen and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial Vietnam has an urgent need for contextualized theology of mission, God, Christ, and the church that is rooted in indigenous cultural traditions and the dual Vietnamese spirit of resistance and assimilation. Dr KimSon Nguyen navigates the religio-cultural dimensions of Vietnamese spirituality and Daoism that have hindered the assimilation of the Christian faith in the Vietnamese context and explores a fresh approach to missiology in Vietnam. Dr Nguyen draws upon his deep knowledge of Vietnamese evangelical history to analyze contextualization and mission theology in Vietnam. He proposes an evangelical theology of God as Ðạo (way / 道), the centrality of the Vietnamese home as the “house of the Lord,” and ancestor veneration as a theological framework for an indigenous theology of the family. Narrowing the gap between culturally removed evangelical missionary practice and widespread syncretistic spirituality in Vietnam, Nguyen calls for a paradigm shift in Vietnamese mission theology that is both robustly evangelical and authentically Vietnamese.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume looks at the Third Great Awakening, one of the most exciting times in the history of American Christianity. A. B. Simpson's impact on the Third Great Awakening and his influence on the modern church is examined. Emphasis is placed on the denomination he founded, the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Simpson's message, the Fourfold Gospel, is also explored. The Fourfold Gospel is: Christ as the Christian's Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, and Coming King. The denomination Simpson founded took this message not only to North America, but also throughout the world. Five movements made up the Third Great Awakening and Simpson's contribution to each one is examined. These five movements include: Evangelizing, Holiness Movement, Healing Movement, Pre-millenial Movement, and Urban and Worldwide Outreach. As this book concludes with a look at Simpson's influence on the church today, we are reminded that as the church goes through the twenty-first century, the Fourfold Gospel continues to be proclaimed just as it was during the Third Great Awakening.

The Azusa Street Mission and Revival tells the story of the small racially-inclusive group that gathered in Los Angeles in 1906 and changed the world of Christianity. With little more than a printing press, a trolley stop and a powerful message, the revival that began at Apostolic Faith Mission on Azusa Street, rapidly crossed more than race lines-into Mexico, Western Europe, Scandinavia and West Africa-and began to change the landscape of Christianity. The complete story of the Mission has finally been recorded, with photographs, articles and testimonies.

Book Charismatic Christianity in Finland Norway and Sweden

Download or read book Charismatic Christianity in Finland Norway and Sweden written by Jessica Moberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license The history of Charismatic Christianity in the Nordic countries reaches as far back as Pentecostalism itself. The bounds of these categories remain a topic of discussion, but Nordic countries have played a vital role in developing this rapidly spreading form of world-wide Christianity. Until now, research on global Charismatic Christianity has largely overlooked the region. This book addresses and analyzes its historical and contemporary trajectories in Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Through a selection of cases written by Nordic scholars from various disciplines, it demonstrates historical and contemporary diversity as well as interconnections between local, national, and global currents. Highlighting change and continuity, the anthology reveals new aspects of Charismatic Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evangelical embrace of conservatism is a familiar feature of the contemporary political landscape. What’s less well-known, however, is that the connection predates the Reagan revolution, going all the way back to the Depression and World War II. Evangelical businessmen at the time were quite active in opposing the New Deal—on both theological and economic grounds—and in doing so claimed a place alongside other conservatives in the public sphere. Like previous generations of devout laymen, they self-consciously merged their religious and business lives, financing and organizing evangelical causes with the kind of visionary pragmatism that they practiced in the boardroom. In God’s Businessmen, Sarah Ruth Hammond explores not only these men’s personal trajectories but also those of the service clubs and other institutions that, like them, believed that businessmen were God’s instrument for the Christianization of the world. Hammond presents a capacious portrait of the relationship between the evangelical business community and the New Deal—and in doing so makes important contributions to American religious history, business history, and the history of the American state.
