Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is one of those published from the proceedings of the invited lectures to the First International Congress of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry I organized at LI~e (Belgium) in August 1984 under the auspices of the Section of Comparative of the International Union of Biological Sciences. In a Physiology and Biochemistry general foreword to these different volumes, it seems to me appropriate to consider briefly what may be the comparative approach. Living organisms, beyond the diversity of their morphological forms, have evolved a widespread range of basic solutions to cope with the different problems, both organisma! and environmental, with which they are faced. Soon after the turn of the century, some biologists realized that these solutions can be best comprehended In the framework of a comparative approach integrating results of phYSiological and biochemical studies done at the organismic, cellular and molecular levels. The development of this approach amongst both physiologists and biochemists remained, however, extremely slow until recently.

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Medicine written by Martin Brüne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 967 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine is grounded in the natural sciences, where biology stands out with regard to our understanding of human physiology and the conditions that cause dysfunction. Ironically though, evolutionary biology is a relatively disregarded field. One reason for this omission is that evolution is deemed a slow process. Indeed, the macroanatomical features of our species have changed very little in the last 300,000 years. A more detailed look, however, reveals that novel ecological contingencies, partly in relation to cultural evolution, have brought about subtle changes pertaining to metabolism and immunology, including adaptations to dietary innovations, as well as adaptations to the exposure to novel pathogens. Rapid pathogen evolution and evolution of cancer cells cause major problems for the immune system. Moreover, many adaptations to past ecologies have actually turned into risk factors for somatic disease and psychological disorder in our modern worlds (i.e. mismatch), among which epidemics of autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity, as well as several forms of cancer stand out. One could add depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions to the list. The Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Medicine is a compilation of up-to-date insights into the evolutionary history of ourselves as a species, exploring how and why our evolved design may convey vulnerability to disease. Written in a classic textbook style emphasising physiology and pathophysiology of all major organ systems, the Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Medicine is valuable reading for students as well as scholars in the fields of medicine, biology, anthropology and psychology.
Download or read book Non neoplastic Pulmonary Pathology written by Sanjay Mukhopadhyay and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This generously illustrated textbook is a simple guide to the pathologic diagnosis of 'medical' lung disease, written by an expert, subspecialty-trained pulmonary pathologist. General surgical pathologists and pathology residents will find it accessible and full of practical pearls that can be used in real-life situations. The algorithms in this book provide a glimpse into the thought process of a subspecialist. They start with an abnormal histologic finding, and take the reader step by step to the correct diagnosis. Unlike most pathology textbooks, diseases are grouped on the basis of pathologic findings rather than etiology, mirroring the actual practice of surgical pathology. Another novel feature of this book is that it provides actual examples of pathology reports for each disease. Pathologists will find this book tremendously helpful when faced with difficult cases of interstitial lung disease or lung granulomas. It should be part of every surgical pathologist's library.

Download or read book Tattooed Skin and Health written by J. Serup and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With about 10–20% of the adult population in Europe being tattooed, there is a strong demand for publications discussing the various issues related to tattooed skin and health. Until now, only a few scientific studies on tattooing have been published. This book discusses different aspects of the various medical risks associated with tattoos, such as allergic reactions from red tattoos, papulo-nodular reactions from black tattoos as well as technical and psycho-social complications, in addition to bacterial and viral infections. Further sections are dedicated to the composition of tattoo inks, and a case is made for the urgent introduction of national and international regulations. Distinguished authors, all specialists in their particular fields, have contributed to this publication which provides a comprehensive view of the health implications associated with tattooing. The book covers a broad range of topics that will be of interest to clinicians and nursing staff, toxicologists and regulators as well as laser surgeons who often face the challenge of having to remove tattoos, professional tattooists and producers of tattoo ink.

Download or read book Comparative Animal Biochemistry written by Klaus Urich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-09-16 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There exists an extreme variability in the biochemical properties of animal organisms. Each species, each individual, in fact each cell type of a multicellular animal has its own molecular characters. This advanced text- and reference book deals with the molecular structures of body substances and the chemical processes of metabolism for the first time throughout the whole animal kingdom from the protozoans to the higher vertebrates. The biochemical variation is explained as adaptation to particular environmental conditions or as the result of phylogenetic diversification. The fascinating insights into the fundamental mechanisms and the time course of evolution that have been gained by the analysis of molecular data are extensively described. More than 4600 actual references give the reader access to the original literature.
