Book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition

Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book The Respiratory Functions of Blood

Download or read book The Respiratory Functions of Blood written by Lars Garby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the first of a series which is designed to present in depth timely reviews of subjects related to the blood. Insofar as each subject lends itself, the clinical aspects of each topic will be presented as fully as is appropriate, in addition to the basic features. As a consequence, the various monographs should be found useful not solely by hematologists. Depending on the nature of each topic, it is expected that these monographs will be found important by physiologists and specialists in fields other than hematology, as well as by scientists of very diverse interests. The present treatise illus trates this point. Doctors Garby and Meldon have brought together in a most useful way the spectacular advances which have been made in the last decade or two in a field of fundamental biologic impor tance. They have also brought to the discussion of this subject their own observations and interpretations as well as their profound understanding of the respiratory functions of the blood. Maxwell M. Wintrobe Salt Lake City, Utah v Preface This volume is an attempt to summarize the present state of know ledge of the respiratory functions of blood in health and disease. Though it deals fairly thoroughly with physicochemical aspects of the blood's gas transport properties and with the molecular chemis try of hemoglobin, its main emphasis is the gas transport function of the blood in vivo and modes of its disturbance in disease.

Download or read book Vertebrate Red Blood Cells written by Mikko Nikinmaa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the respiratory function of vertebrate red cells. I have defined the phrase "respiratory function" broadly to include, in addition to the actual oxygen and carbon dioxide transport, erythropoiesis, haemoglobin synthesis, red cell structure, the deformability of red cells in circulation, ion and substrate transport across the cell membrane, cellular metabolism, and control of cellular volume and pH. All of these aspects of the red cell function may affect gas transport between the respiratory epithelia and the tissues. Throughout the book, I have tried to relate our current knowledge about the nucleated red cell function to the wealth of information about the function of mammalian red cells. However, whenever possible, I have placed the emphasis on the nucleated red cell function for two reasons. First, the erythro cytes of 90% of vertebrate species are nucleated, and, second, nucleated red cell function has not been reviewed earlier in a single volume. This being the case, I have tried to make the reference list as complete as I could with regard to nucleated red cells. I hope that the approach adopted is useful for both com parative and human physiologists. Many people have contributed to the making of this book directly or in directly. Antti Soivio started me in this field. Prof. Henrik Wallgren has always encouraged fresh scientific ideas in his department. My present ideas of red cell function have been influenced by work carried out with Prof. Roy E.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Respiratory Function of the Blood After all, the pleasantest memories of a cruise are those of the men with whom one has sailed. The debt which I owe to my colleagues, whether older or younger than myself, will be evident enough to any reader of the book. It leaves me well-nigh bankrupt - a condition well-known to most sailors. But I owe another large debt of gratitude to those who, as teachers, showed me the fascination of physiology, to Dr Kimmins*, and especially to Dr Anderson-t. At a later stage I learned much from Dr Gaskell, Professor Langley and Dr Haldane. Formerly science master at the Leys School now Chief Inspector of the Educational Department of the London County Council. Formerly supervisor in physiology to King's College, now Master of Gonville and Caius College. There are occasions on which every sailor of the deep sea has to ship a pilot. Mr A. V. Hill has brought me into those harbours which are best approached through the, to me, unknown channels of mathematics. I have to thank him and also Miss Dale for much help with my proofs.
