Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resources of Turkey Considered With Especial Reference to the Profitable Investment of Capital in the Ottoman Empire My Dear Sir, In the following pages I have endeavoured to trace the rise and progress of Turkish commerce, and, while engaged in making the necessary researches upon the subject, I have been more and more impressed with the fact that it is to the mercantile community, of which you are one of the principal members, that the extension of British trade in the Ottoman Empire is mainly indebted. In the year 1827 the value of our exports to Turkey amounted only to 531,704l., whilst in 1860 it had increased to the sum of 5,457,839l.; and it is to the energy and perseverance of the Greeks, who now supply the connecting link so long wanting between Eastern and Western Europe, that this remarkable progress is to be attributed. The Greeks of the present day possess, in an eminent manner, a thirst for knowledge and improvement, and have carried commercial enterprise to a degree of perfection scarcely paralleled, under similar circumstances, in the history of the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ottoman Empire was one of the largest and longest-lasting empires in history—and one of the most culinarily inclined. In this powerful and complex concoction of politics, culture, and cuisine, the production and consumption of food reflected the lives of the empire’s citizens from sultans to soldiers. Food bound people of different classes and backgrounds together, defining identity and serving symbolic functions in the social, religious, political, and military spheres. In Bountiful Empire, Priscilla Mary Işın examines the changing meanings of the Ottoman Empire’s foodways as they evolved over more than five centuries. Işın begins with the essential ingredients of this fascinating history, examining the earlier culinary traditions in which Ottoman cuisine was rooted, such as those of the Central Asian Turks, Abbasids, Seljuks, and Byzantines. She goes on to explore the diverse aspects of this rich culinary culture, including etiquette, cooks, restaurants, military food, food laws, and food trade. Drawing on everything from archival documents to poetry and featuring more than one hundred delectable illustrations, this meticulously researched, beautiful volume offers fresh and lively insight into an empire and cuisine that until recent decades have been too narrowly viewed through orientalist spectacles.

Book Palestine in the Victorian Age

Download or read book Palestine in the Victorian Age written by Gabriel Polley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of the modern history of Palestine/Israel often begin with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and Britain's arrival in 1917. However, this work argues that the contest over Palestine has its roots deep in the 19th century, with Victorians who first cast the Holy Land as an area to be possessed by empire, then began to devise schemes for its settler colonization. The product of historical research among almost forgotten guidebooks, archives and newspaper clippings, this book presents a previously unwritten chapter of Britain's colonial desire, and reveals how indigenous Palestinians began to react against, or accommodate themselves to, the West's fascination with their ancestral land. From the travellers who tried to overturn Jerusalem's holiest sites, to an uprising sparked by a church bell and a missionary's tragic actions, to one Palestinian's eventful visit to the heart of the British Empire, Palestine in the Victorian Age reveals how the events of the nineteenth century have cast a long shadow over the politics of Palestine/Israel ever since.
