Book The Resource Recovery Planning Model

Download or read book The Resource Recovery Planning Model written by Robert E. Chapman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resource Recovery Planning Model: A New Tool for Solid Waste Management Over the past decade, there has been a proliferation of mathematical models attacking such issues as facility location, vehicle routing and manpower planning. Due to unrealistic data requirements or the complexity of using and interpreting the model's results, the application of these models to the solid waste management problem has often been disappointing. More recent modeling approaches have attempted to couple the analytical power of the computer with the ability to organize the thoughts of the decision maker systematically so that important pieces of information are not overlooked. From these experiences, it is possible to define a set of criteria that any model which purports to deal with solid waste management problems should satisfy. At a minimum, the model should be able to capture explicitly the effects of alternative financial and cost-sharing arrangements, allow for economies of scale, and be amenable to sensitivity analysis associated with a well-chosen set of what-if questions. Book Healthy Resilient and Sustainable Communities After Disasters

Download or read book Healthy Resilient and Sustainable Communities After Disasters written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the devastation that follows a major disaster, there is a need for multiple sectors to unite and devote new resources to support the rebuilding of infrastructure, the provision of health and social services, the restoration of care delivery systems, and other critical recovery needs. In some cases, billions of dollars from public, private and charitable sources are invested to help communities recover. National rhetoric often characterizes these efforts as a "return to normal." But for many American communities, pre-disaster conditions are far from optimal. Large segments of the U.S. population suffer from preventable health problems, experience inequitable access to services, and rely on overburdened health systems. A return to pre-event conditions in such cases may be short-sighted given the high costs - both economic and social - of poor health. Instead, it is important to understand that the disaster recovery process offers a series of unique and valuable opportunities to improve on the status quo. Capitalizing on these opportunities can advance the long-term health, resilience, and sustainability of communities - thereby better preparing them for future challenges. Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters identifies and recommends recovery practices and novel programs most likely to impact overall community public health and contribute to resiliency for future incidents. This book makes the case that disaster recovery should be guided by a healthy community vision, where health considerations are integrated into all aspects of recovery planning before and after a disaster, and funding streams are leveraged in a coordinated manner and applied to health improvement priorities in order to meet human recovery needs and create healthy built and natural environments. The conceptual framework presented in Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters lays the groundwork to achieve this goal and provides operational guidance for multiple sectors involved in community planning and disaster recovery. Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters calls for actions at multiple levels to facilitate recovery strategies that optimize community health. With a shared healthy community vision, strategic planning that prioritizes health, and coordinated implementation, disaster recovery can result in a communities that are healthier, more livable places for current and future generations to grow and thrive - communities that are better prepared for future adversities.

Book Resource Recovery Economics

Book excerpt: This critical volume addresses an important contemporary issue, how to determine themost cost-effective approach to solid waste disposal. Based on wide-ranging, practicalexperience, this time-saving work details a systems approach to feasibility studies, providingthe basis for accurate, efficient analysis. And, to illustrate the use of this innovativemethod, the book includes a complete "case study" of a hypothetical community.Beginning with data collection and cost estimation, Resource Recovery Economics movesthrough the analysis process, covering marketing of resources, alternative systems, financialconsiderations, life-cycle-costs, and implementation planning. Additionally, resultsfrom many actual studies are included, making this an excellent reference book for solidwaste management data.A unique work, Resource Recovery Economics serves as the requisite reference for allofficials responsible for solid waste disposal and management, including public worksdirectors, city planners, solid waste directors, public health officials, and environmentalprotection officers. This outstanding book also affords the basis for graduate and advancedundergraduate engineering, urban planning, and public administration courses in SolidWaste Management Planning and Resource Recovery Planning. Moreover, consulting engineers, investment bankers, and original equipment manufacturers will derive improvedunderstanding of their role in the analysis process.

Book Planning for Post Disaster Recovery

Download or read book Planning for Post Disaster Recovery written by Gavin Smith and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The failure to plan for disaster recovery results in a process of rebuilding that often presages the next disaster. It also limits the collective maximization of governmental, nonprofit, and private resources, including those resources that are available at the community level. As individuals, groups, communities, and organizations routinely struggle to recover from disasters, they are beset by a duplication of efforts, poor interorganizational coordination, the development and implementation of policies that are not shaped by local needs, and the spread of misinformation. Yet investment in pre-event planning for post-disaster recovery remains low. Although researchers pointed to this problem at least twenty-five years ago, an unfortunate reality remains: disaster recovery is the least understood aspect of emergency management among both scholars and practitioners. In addition, the body of knowledge that does exist has not been effectively disseminated to those who engage in disaster recovery activities. Planning for Post-Disaster Recoveryblends what we know about disaster recovery from the research literature with an analysis of existing practice to uncover problems and recommend solutions. It is intended for hazard scholars, practitioners, and others who have not assimilated or acted upon the existing body of knowledge, or who are unexpectedly drawn into the recovery process following a disaster.
