Book The Resin in pulp Programme at Mintek

Download or read book The Resin in pulp Programme at Mintek written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade Mintek has investigated the feasibility of using resins to recover gold. Work in the area of resin chemistry has progressed from the evaluation of commercial resins to the development of special resins. Laboratory and pilot-plant testwork has resulted in the accumulation of knowledge of the properties of different adsorbents which facilitates the choice of the correct adsorbent for a particular pulp. Methods of elution and recovery of gold from eluates have also received attention at the laboratory and the pilot-plant scale. During the same period engineering expertise developed for uranium-ore processing was adapted for application to gold pulps; and this culminated in the successful operation of a demonstration unit, and the conversion of the Golden Jubilee carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant to resin-in-pulp (RIP). Case studies drawn from the above work illustrate the attractiveness of the RIP process and the expertise developed during these years which qualifies Mintek to assist gold producers in applying RIP technology.

Book excerpt: Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) is the preferred method of gold recovery from cyanided pulp. However, the resin-in-pulp (RIP) process is considered to have several advantages for the recovery of gold. Mintek therefore undertook a research programme to develop a commercially-viable RIP process. The MINRIP RIP process and a novel gold-selective strong-base resin, Minix, were developed. An adsorption contactor was identified and successfully demonstrated at a scale of 100000 t/month. Continuous countercurrent tests using synthetic solutions show that the relative performance of the adsorbent depends on the composition of the solution. Minix resin yielded a higher gold loading than that of carbon, while maintaining an acceptable barren value. Batch tests on many gold-bearing materials indicated that Minix has potentially a higher capacity than carbon, and loads gold faster than carbon. An economic appraisal that consolidated the countercurrent results indicated that the capital and operating costs of the MINRIP process are considerably lower than these of CIP. The amount of cost advantage depends on the gold content of the feed and the throughput.

Book The Resin in pulp Process at the Golden Jubilee Mine

Download or read book The Resin in pulp Process at the Golden Jubilee Mine written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa is the first mine in the Western World to introduce resin-in-pulp technology for the recovery of gold from a cyanide-leached slurry. Batch tests were carried out with strong-base resins, and the results were very promising, and pointed to fast kinetics and a high loading capacity. In 1987 a more detailed investigation of the RIP option was carried out, and a pilot-plant was operated for four weeks at Mintek with a continuous countercurrent flow of cyanided pulp and strong-base resin. A decision was taken to convert the metallurgical plant from carbon-in-leach to RIP. This paper describes the Golden Jubilee story; a success story of entrepreneurial spirit in which a small mining company embraced new technology.

Book excerpt: Resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology has been developed for recovery of gold. It is now time to look forward to the potential for application of the technology to other situations. Some cases have been identified and have merited preliminary testwork. Four examples, which illustrate the potential of RIP, are dealt with in this paper. These include removal of metal-cyanides from pulps, recovery of manganese that is difficult to wash from filter cakes, recovery of nickel from low grade pulps, and recovery of zinc from process residues. The discussion includes descriptions of the problems, factors that affect the choice of resin, and factors that will affect the economics of the process. (AUAB).
