Book Adult Education as Theory Practice and Research

Download or read book Adult Education as Theory Practice and Research written by Robin Usher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors argue that the aim of research should be to improve practice through a process of critical reflection. Focusing clearly on the everyday concerns and problems of practitioners, they emphasize the importance of practical knowledge. Their definition of ‘practice’ is wide, and includes the generation of theory and the doing of research as well as front-line teaching. They show how notions of ‘adult learning’ and ‘the adult learner’ have been constituted mainly through theory and research in psychology and sociology, and examine action research as a mode of understanding. They conclude by looking at the curriculum implications for the teaching of adult education as reflective practice.

The chapters present novel applications of several key concepts and research methods, including activism, arts-based research, critical reflection, decolonising feminism, doctoral study and supervision, hybrid identities, Indigenous research, migrant education, racism, researcher self-efficacy, teacher identity, visual autoethnography and writing as voice. This book will be of use to all researchers, and doctoral and Masters students, using qualitative and autoethnographic methods in Education and related fields.

Book Northern Lights on Civic and Citizenship Education

Download or read book Northern Lights on Civic and Citizenship Education written by Heidi Biseth and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents an in-depth analysis of data from ICCS. An international group of scholars critically address the state of civic and citizenship education in the four Nordic countries that participated in the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) in 2009 and 2016. The findings are of particular relevance to educators at all levels, from school education through to teacher education. Nordic countries have long traditions of democracy and their students have performed relatively well in the ICCS assessments. Nonetheless, citizenship education continues to evolve and has received increasing attention in recent educational reforms, indicating policymakers understanding that schools play an important role in establishing democratic values among future citizens. Data from ICCS can be used to analyze, discuss, and reflect on the status of civic and citizenship education and can contribute to the discourse on the potential role of education in contributing to sustainable democracies for a common future. However, teaching citizenship and learning democracy are two different things. While young people can be taught about democracy in school, it is vital that schools work together with the wider community in which youth operate to strengthen civic understanding and values for all young people regardless of their social and economic background.

Book Research Issues in the Learning and Teaching of Algebra

Download or read book Research Issues in the Learning and Teaching of Algebra written by Sigrid Wagner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1989. We clearly know more today about teaching and learning mathematics than we did twenty years ago, and we are beginning to see the effects of this new knowledge at the classroom level. In particular, we can point to several significant sets of studies based on emerging theoretical frameworks. To establish such a framework, researchers must be provided with the opportunity to exchange and refine their ideas and viewpoints. Conferences held in Georgia and Wisconsin during the seventies serve as examples of the role such meetings can play in providing a vehicle for increased communication, synthesis, summary, and cross-disciplinary fertilization among researchers working within a specialized area of mathematical learning. This monograph holds selected papers from four more recent conferences on Research Agenda in Mathematics Education.
