Book excerpt: In 1906, having been assigned Izaak Walton's Life of Donne to read for his English class, a Harvard freshman heard a lecture on the long disparaged 'metaphysical' poets. Years later, when an appreciation of these poets was considered a consummate mark of a modernist sensibility, T. S. Eliot was routinely credited with having 'discovered' Donne himself. John Donne in the Nineteenth Century tracks the myriad ways in which 'Donne' was lodged in literary culture in the Romantic and Victorian periods. The early chapters document a first revival of interest when Walton's Life was said to be 'in the hands of every reader'; they explore what Wordsworth and Coleridge contributed to the conditions for the 1839 publication of the only edition ever called The Works, which reprinted the sermons of 'Dr Donne'. Later chapters trace a second revival, when admirers of the biography, turning to the prose letters and the poems to supplement Walton, discovered that his hero's writings entail the sorts of controversial issues that are raised by Browning, by the 'fleshly school' of poets, and by self-consciously 'decadent' writers of the fin de siècle. The final chapters treat the spread of the academic study of Donne from Harvard, where already in the 1880s he was the anchor of the seventeenth-century course, to other institutions and beyond the academy, showing that Donne's status as a writer eclipsed his importance as the subject of Walton's narrative, which Leslie Stephen facetiously called 'the masterpiece of English biography'.

The seventeenth-century French philosopher Nicolas Malebranche suggested a possibility: that prayer teaches us how to attend. This book explores the precedents of Malebranche s advice by reading John Donne s poetic prayers in the context of what David Marno calls the art of holy attention. This requires an understanding of attention s role in Christian devotion, which he provides by uncovering a tradition of holy attention that spans from ascetic thinkers and Church Fathers to Catholic spiritual exercises and Protestant prayer manuals. Donne s devotional poems occupy a unique position in this tradition. Marno identifies in them a devotional model of thinking whose aim is to experience an affect of attention. Marno s argument is framed by compelling close readings of Death, be not proud, Donne s most triumphant poem about the resurrection. Elsewhere, Marno takes up Claudius s prayer in "Hamlet" and Saint Augustine s account of attention in the "Soliloquies" and the "Confessions." The book ends with a Coda on the aftermath of holy attention in the philosophies of Descartes and Malebranche."

Book excerpt: This book argues that Walton's practice, in his Lives, was crucial in shaping modern expectations of biography: how it should be organised, how it should treat evidence, how seriously it should regard narrative coherence, and most particularly in the modern expectation of an intimaterelationship between author, reader, and subject. They are also considered as prominent andaccomplished examples of the many politically intended narratives which exploit a consensual interpretation of private virtue to support, without having to argue for, a sectarian interpretation of public rectitude.

Book excerpt: This study constitutes a project of intercultural communication, centering on the texts of Sir Philip Sidney. It attempts to trace Sidney's response to two main Renaissance currents: the rhetorical movement associated with Aristotle, Cicero, Augustine, and their Renaissance followers and the conglomerate of theories named after Plato but containing large portions of Plotinian, Augustinian, and other ideas. Chapter 1 provides the theoretical background to the rhetorical movement. Chapter 2 then discusses Sidney's stance regarding neoplatonism. The remaining three chapters survey Sidney's literary works, from the early Lady of May to the late revisions of the Arcadia. These chapters exemplify those aspects of Sidney's poetics that have been discussed in the preceding two chapters. emphasis upon Sidney's desire to educate his readers. Sidney reacted against the premises of Florentine neoplatonism, and in his works he criticized the resulting Petrarchism. But thanks to the Augustinian synthesis of Platonism and Christianity he was nevertheless able to draw from a rich Platonic heritage. He devised a poetics which was based on a mixture of Augustinian Platonism and Aristotleianism, and which had a strong rhetorical bias. communicative model by which these ideas could be transmitted to the reader. He thereby produced a text which looked beyond itself, on the one hand to the world of ideas from which it was figured forth, and, on the other, to the realization of these ideas in the reader. For this communication between the readers and the world of ideas to be effectual, Sidney developed a fiction that not only demands careful analysis but actually helps to develop the mental faculties of its readers. The dialectical structure of his literary works, from the smallest segment of sentence structure to the largest narrative devices, forces the reader to become an informed judge.
