Book excerpt: Historians have generally ranked John Tyler as one of the least successful chief executives, despite achievements such as the WebsterAshburton treaty, which heralded improved relations with Great Britain, and the annexation of Texas. Why did Tyler pursue what appears to have been a politically selfdestructive course with regard to both his first party, the Democrats, and his later political alliance, the Whigs? Monroe has set out to explain the beliefs that led to Tyler=s resigning his Senate seat and exercising politically suicidal presidential vetoes as well as examines the crises Tyler faced during his term in the House: the Panic of 1819, the financially tottering national bank, and the Missouri debate.

Book excerpt: The first "accidental president," whose secret maneuverings brought Texas into the Union and set secession in motion When William Henry Harrison died in April 1841, just one month after his inauguration, Vice President John Tyler assumed the presidency. It was a controversial move by this Southern gentleman, who had been placed on the fractious Whig ticket with the hero of Tippecanoe in order to sweep Andrew Jackson's Democrats, and their imperial tendencies, out of the White House. Soon Tyler was beset by the Whigs' competing factions. He vetoed the charter for a new Bank of the United States, which he deemed unconstitutional, and was expelled from his own party. In foreign policy, as well, Tyler marched to his own drummer. He engaged secret agents to help resolve a border dispute with Britain and negotiated the annexation of Texas without the Senate's approval. The resulting sectional divisions roiled the country. Gary May, a historian known for his dramatic accounts of secret government, sheds new light on Tyler's controversial presidency, which saw him set aside his dedication to the Constitution to gain his two great ambitions: Texas and a place in history.

Book excerpt: Explore the tumultuous era of the 10th President of the United States, John Tyler, in this comprehensive biography that delves into his remarkable life and pivotal role in shaping American history. In John Tyler's book readers will embark on a journey through the complex political landscape of the 19th century, where Tyler's unexpected rise to the presidency left an indelible mark. Born into a prominent Virginia family, Tyler's early years were marked by a commitment to states' rights and opposition to the expanding powers of the federal government. As a staunch supporter of slavery and an advocate for states' sovereignty, Tyler's journey from the Democratic-Republican Party to the Whig Party mirrored the political upheaval of his time. Tyler's ascension to the presidency, following the death of President William Henry Harrison just 31 days into office, set a precedent for future vice presidents. His presidency, characterized by strict adherence to a constructionist view of the Constitution, was marked by clashes with Congress, including the Whigs, who expelled him from the party, dubbing him "His Accidency." Throughout his term, Tyler navigated a challenging political landscape, which included vetoing significant Whig-sponsored bills, such as those related to a national bank and tariff rates. Despite domestic policy stalemates, Tyler achieved several foreign policy successes, including treaties with Britain and China. As a firm believer in manifest destiny, Tyler championed the annexation of Texas, setting the stage for its statehood. This biography sheds light on Tyler's role as a key figure in the expansion of the United States. This book offers readers a compelling look at a leader whose presidency left an enduring legacy, both in terms of his states' rights advocacy and his contributions to America's foreign relations. Whether you are a history enthusiast or seeking to understand a pivotal period in American history, this book provides an insightful and comprehensive portrait of John Tyler.

Book excerpt: John Tyler - The President without a Party is the biography of John Tyler, the tenth (1841-1845) President of the United States. A long-time Democrat-Republican, Tyler was elected Vice President on the Whig ticket and on becoming president in 1841, broke with that party. His term as Vice President began on March 4, 1841 and one month later, on April 4, incumbent President William Henry Harrison died of what is today believed to have been viral pneumonia. His most famous achievement was the annexation of the Republic of Texas in 1845. Tyler was the first President born after the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. Tyler's Presidency was rarely taken seriously in his time. He was usually referred to as the "Acting President" or "His Accidency" by opponents. John Tyler - The President without a Party is highly recommended for those interested in learning more about the life of President John Tyler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This New York Times bestselling “deep dive into the terms of eight former presidents is chock-full of political hijinks—and déjà vu” (Vanity Fair) and provides a fascinating look at the men who came to the office without being elected to it, showing how each affected the nation and world. The strength and prestige of the American presidency has waxed and waned since George Washington. Eight men have succeeded to the presidency when the incumbent died in office. In one way or another they vastly changed our history. Only Theodore Roosevelt would have been elected in his own right. Only TR, Truman, Coolidge, and LBJ were re-elected. John Tyler succeeded William Henry Harrison who died 30 days into his term. He was kicked out of his party and became the first president threatened with impeachment. Millard Fillmore succeeded esteemed General Zachary Taylor. He immediately sacked the entire cabinet and delayed an inevitable Civil War by standing with Henry Clay’s compromise of 1850. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded our greatest president, sided with remnants of the Confederacy in Reconstruction. Chester Arthur, the embodiment of the spoils system, was so reviled as James Garfield’s successor that he had to defend himself against plotting Garfield’s assassination; but he reformed the civil service. Theodore Roosevelt broke up the trusts. Calvin Coolidge silently cooled down the Harding scandals and preserved the White House for the Republican Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression. Harry Truman surprised everybody when he succeeded the great FDR and proved an able and accomplished president. Lyndon B. Johnson was named to deliver Texas electorally. He led the nation forward on Civil Rights but failed on Vietnam. Accidental Presidents shows that “history unfolds in death as well as in life” (The Wall Street Journal) and adds immeasurably to our understanding of the power and limits of the American presidency in critical times.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Tyler: His History, Character, and Position; With a Portrait The primary object of this publication is to re pel the calumny which has been heaped upon John Tyler, and to disabuse the public mind in reference to his character, history, and position - his aims, and the purposes of his administration. Up to the period when Mr. Clay arrayed the majority of the twenty seventh Congress against President Tyler, the pub lic career of no eminent man in the nation had commanded respect more universal, or admiration more uniform and sincere. Consistent in every act of his life, devoted to those sound republican doc trines which have ever been cherished by the de mocracy of Virginia, unambitious except to pro mote the good of his country, he has illustrated all the virtues which can dignify and adorn the char acter of an American statesman. When called by an act of Providence to the executive chair, he car ried with him those principles which had been the guide of his life, and an unalterable purpose to ad minister the government in strict conformity with their spirit and tendency. But how were his patriotic intentions met by the party which had placed him in power? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book John Tyler the Accidental President

Download or read book John Tyler the Accidental President written by Edward P. Crapol and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-01-18 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first vice president to become president on the death of the incumbent, John Tyler (1790-1862) was derided by critics as "His Accidency." In this biography of the tenth president, Edward P. Crapol challenges depictions of Tyler as a die-hard advocate of states' rights, limited government, and a strict interpretation of the Constitution. Instead, he argues, Tyler manipulated the Constitution to increase the executive power of the presidency. Crapol also highlights Tyler's faith in America's national destiny and his belief that boundless territorial expansion would preserve the Union as a slaveholding republic. When Tyler sided with the Confederacy in 1861, he was branded as America's "traitor" president for having betrayed the republic he once led.

Book The Isolated Presidency

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beginning with a discussion of how the regime created by the Constitution requires a strong executive, it then moves to note the different attributes that emerge from the presidency's structure. Specifically, energy, secrecy, continuity, a national perspective, and a longer temporal horizon. The rest of the chapter describes how these attributes fit in with the presidency's constitutional duties and powers, providing the means to achieve the functional ends set by the Constitution. The framework for analyzing the relationship between the office's structure, duties, and powers are five presidential roles: chief executive, chief legislator, chief diplomat, commander-in-chief, and chief constitutionalist. Throughout the chapter it is also noted how this logic interacts with the other branches and points out those areas where the logic may have tensions or be ambiguous, to be resolved by political contestation"--
