Madison's constitutional arrangement was designed to pit the elite special financial interests in one political social class against the non-elites in the other party. He made the constitutional rules unbalanced and unfair, to benefit the financial elites. The socialists are poised and positioned to obtain the levers of power that had been reserved for the financial elites. At the same moment in history that the Democrats abandoned their allegiance to the middle class, the Republicans morphed into a global corporatist party, which no longer defends American sovereignty. As a consequence of these two political developments, the citizens of America do not have a legitimate choice for a party to represent their interests. Citizens under Madison's constitution did well when they had economic and financial opportunities for wealth and upward occupational mobility, and they have not had these conditions since the Republicans passed laws that severely damaged the welfare of the citizens. In the absence of economic growth, citizens have needlessly suffered economic failure and depressions. Restoring the American natural rights republic means the citizens have two major tasks ahead of them: 1.The citizens must eliminate the socialist threat to freedom. The next book in this series explains that if, and when, California citizens vote to leave the Union to form their own socialist state, that socialists in other states should be encouraged to emigrate to California. 2.After the socialist threat has been eliminated, citizens in the remaining states need to hold a constitutional convention and re-write fair constitutional rules.

This book explores the decisions to surrender power and to legitimate this surrender: collective abdications. Commonsensical explanations impute such actions to coercive pressures, actors’ miscalculations, or their contamination by ideologies at odds with group interests. Ivan Ermakoff argues that these explanations are either incomplete or misleading. Focusing on two paradigmatic cases of voluntary and unconditional surrender of power—the passing of an enabling bill granting Hitler the right to amend the Weimar constitution without parliamentary supervision (March 1933), and the transfer of full executive, legislative, and constitutional powers to Marshal Pétain (Vichy, France, July 1940)—Ruling Oneself Out recasts abdication as the outcome of a process of collective alignment. Ermakoff distinguishes several mechanisms of alignment in troubled and uncertain times and assesses their significance through a fine-grained examination of actors’ beliefs, shifts in perceptions, and subjective states. To this end, he draws on the analytical and methodological resources of perspectives that usually stand apart: primary historical research, formal decision theory, the phenomenology of group processes, quantitative analyses, and the hermeneutics of testimonies. In elaborating this dialogue across disciplinary boundaries, Ruling Oneself Out restores the complexity and indeterminate character of pivotal collective decisions and demonstrates that an in-depth historical exploration can lay bare processes of crucial importance for understanding the formation of political preferences, the paradox of self-deception, and the makeup of historical events as highly consequential.

Book excerpt: Thomas Paine wrote the first part of The Rights of Man in 1791 as a response to the furious attack on the French Revolution by the British parliamentarian Edmund Burke in his pamphlet Reflections on the Revolution in France, published the previous year. Paine carefully dissects and counters Burke’s arguments and provides a more accurate description of the events surrounding the revolution of 1789. He then reproduces and comments on the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and of Citizens” promulgated by the National Assembly of France. The manuscript of The Rights of Man was placed with the publisher Joseph Johnson, but that publisher was threatened with legal action by the British Government. Paine then gave the work to another publisher, J. S. Jordan, and on the advice of William Blake, Paine went to France to be out of the way of possible arrest in Britain. The Rights of Man was published in March 1791, and was an immediate success with the British public, selling nearly a million copies. A second part of the book, subtitled “Combining Principle and Practice,” was published in February 1792. It puts forward practical proposals for the establishment of republican government in countries like Britain. The Rights of Man had a major impact, leading to the establishment of a number of reform societies. After the publication of the second part of the book, Paine and his publisher were charged with seditious libel, and Paine was eventually forced to leave Britain and flee to France. Today The Rights of Man is considered a classic of political writing and philosophy. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
