As the latter route would enable me to enjoy an entirely novel spectacle, that of viewing sub-marine scenery, I chose, and wisely I now know, to come by the Pneu matic Tube Electric Company. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Bowman Dodd's 1897 science fiction book -- presented as a series of letters from a Swedish nobleman while visiting a socialist republic in America in 2050 -- offers a glimpse of a future New York where socialists have eliminated religion, distinctions between the sexes, and mechanized all labor. Amazingly inventive, with intercontinental travel by balloons and pneumatic tubes, as well as many other inventions, this dystopian, anti-socialist work remains fresh and remarkable on many levels.

Download or read book The Republic of the Future Classic Reprint written by J. Hagerty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Republic of the Future And in regard to the discussion on bills, I think that one speech in favor of and one in opposition to, is quite sufficient for any measure. For again, we have the press, with its staff of trained and able writers, who are accustomed to grasp the main points in any case and present them in a condensed and easily-digested shape to its readers, who, absorbing their opinions with their coffee, but always exercising their own judgment, are prepared to decide on any measure before the nation, State, or village - for the people themselves decide what measures in the different legislatures shall or 'shall not become laws, their servants merely acting as clerks, in that part of the business. The bill being introduced, it is numbered and put away for the present, and telegraph and press combine to inform the people throughout the country that bill has been intro duced, and the press make their comments on it, as usual. Should the proposed measure conflict with the interests of any community, the member from that district will doubtless be notified by a majority of the halls, through the press, as usual - for he does nothing officially without this instruction - to oppose the measure in a speech, and if several members are thus directed to do so, let them select, by lot or other wise, among themselves, which shall do it. If no speeches are desired to be made against the bill, then none are made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fears for the Future of the Republic

Download or read book Fears for the Future of the Republic written by Daniel Dougherty and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fears for the Future of the Republic: An Address Delivered Before the Literary Societies of Lafayette College Permit me to begin by presenting to the members of the Washington Literary Society of Lafayette College my grateful acknowledgments for the unmerited honor they have conferred in inviting me to this presence and this place. The orator of an occasion like this is generally selected from among the distinguished graduates of the College. He returns once more, like a wanderer to his early home, to tread the old familiar halls, to look around on scenes sanctified by departed joys, to feel the welcome grasp of long separated but ever faithful friends, to bask again in the smiles of those who perhaps first taught him to aspire, and to receive the thrilling congratulations of the venerated men who sent him forth into the world crowned with their blessings. I appear here under no such auspices. I entered your College walls for the first time to-day. No old comrades are here to welcome me. A stranger to you all, I am sustained solely by the disinterested kindness which prompted the invitation, and I am sure the ladies and gentlemen present will lend an indulgent ear while I proceed feebly to discharge the duty assigned me. The age in which we live, and the country we call our own, are the most marvellous that have existed since fallen Adam looked his last on Paradise. The boldest flights of the romancer, the wildest dreams of the poet, cannot parallel the rise and progress of this nation. There are Peers in the British Parliament who are older than this Republic. When Henry Brougham was born the American continent was an almost unbroken wilderness. European kings claimed it as an appendage to their crowns. Here and there might be seen a cultivated spot, the plain yet pleasant home of a thrifty farmer. Occasionally the eye would light on a spacious mansion, where some wealthy gentleman lived in baronial ease. I propose then, as the theme for this hour, the uture OF the republic. May we rationally hope that its life and success will be permanent; or has it entered upon a career of brilliant, brief mortality? When our fathers shaped and fashioned it, and breathed into its beautiful form the inspiration of their great lives, did they utter a vain and empty boast, when they pronounced upon it the loving benediction Esto Perpetua? Book History of the United States

Download or read book History of the United States written by Emma Willard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States: Or Republic of America AT 9. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anglo-American Future IF the key to the puzzle of this distracted world can be said to rest in any single fact, it is to be found in the relations of the British Commonwealth and the American Commonwealth. The war has scrapped the European system, and with it the whole political mechanism of pre - war society. In that society Europe was alike the brain and the power-house. From the general current of the world's affairs, the American continent stood aloof by tradition and interest. It was self-contained and sufficient to itself. It would have no integral association with European politics, nor would it permit Europe to acquire new sovereign rights in its own soil. The doctrine of isolation laid down by the Fathers of the United States Republic was in principle extended to the whole continent by President Monroe. It is pertinent to remind ourselves that in this extension English statesmanship played a Significant part which will be worth attention in a later connexion. Book Haifa Republic A Democratic Future for Israel

Download or read book Haifa Republic A Democratic Future for Israel written by Omri Boehm and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative argument for a new way of seeing Israel, Zionism, and the two-state solution. Haifa Republic: A Democratic Future for Israel is an urgent wake-up call. The philosopher Omri Boehm argues that it is long past time to recognize that there will not be a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people. After fifty years, Israel’s occupation of the West Bank constitutes annexation in all but name, even as the legitimate claims of the Arab population, soon to be a national majority, remain unaddressed. Meanwhile, daily life goes on under conditions rightly likened to apartheid. For liberals in Israel and America to continue to place their hopes in a two-state solution is a form of willful and culpable blindness, especially now that Israeli leaders across the political spectrum have begun to speak of ethnic cleansing. A catastrophe is in the making. But Haifa Republic also offers grounds for hope. Catastrophe can be averted, Boehm contends, by reconfiguring Israel as a single binational state in which Palestinians and Jews both possess human rights and equal citizenship. The original Zionists—Theodor Herzl, Ze’ev Jabotinsky, and, early in his career, David Ben-Gurion—all advocated such a federation, and as prime minister, Menachem Begin successfully submitted a kindred plan to the Knesset. A binational federation offers a last chance for the two peoples who call Palestine home to live in peace and mutual respect and to have a truly democratic future in common.

Book Rational Communism

Download or read book Rational Communism written by Alonzo Van Deusen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Communism: The Present and the Future Republic of North America Since the time of Sir Thomas More, theories in advance of the current ideas of the day have been contemptuously styled Utopian; but history clearly shows that all the great changes which have thus far taken place in the world, resulting in human prog ress, have been foreshadowed and set in motion by what were at first termed utopian or ideal follies. Since mankind have been continually making such mistakes in the past, is it not just possible that their political, industrial, and social systems have not as yet reached absolute perfection, and that better sys tems for the regulation of society may still be de vised than those now in vogue? Here, I trust, a few words in regard to myself may be excused, as showing with how little sympathy I at one time in my life regarded this hated Communism. His racial peculiarities and limitations are re lated with no malice toward the race, but for the benefit of both races, in order that the white people of the Republic may in vestigate and see the negro as others see and know him. Mistaken ideas regarding the race are more hurtful to the negro than the white man, and if this book can correct only a few mistakes made in the past, its mission to both races will be fulfilled.
