Book The Representation of Gender Specific Conversational Behaviour in Informal Talk

Download or read book The Representation of Gender Specific Conversational Behaviour in Informal Talk written by Juliane Behm and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Conversation analysts have begun to challenge long-cherished assumptions about the relationship between gender and language, asking new questions about the interactional study of gender and providing fresh insights into the ways it may be studied empirically. Drawing on a lively set of audio- and video-recorded materials of real-life interactions, including domestic telephone calls, children's play, mediation sessions, police-suspect interviews, psychiatric assessments and calls to telephone helplines, this volume is the first to showcase the latest thinking and cutting-edge research of an international group of scholars working on topics at the intersection of gender and conversation analysis. Theoretically, it pushes forward the boundaries of our understanding of the relationship between conversation and gender, charting new and exciting territory. Methodologically, it offers readers a clear, practical understanding of how to analyse gender using conversation analysis, by presenting detailed demonstrations of this method in use.

Book Gender and Language

Download or read book Gender and Language written by Alexandra Köhler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: Sehr gut, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, course: Seminar, 11 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: For many years linguists and sociologists have studied the patterns of communication between the genders. Language differences emerge at a very early stage of learning to speak. These differences are passed on to the young by the men and women who are around them. As children learn the language of gender differences they also learn the culturally proscribed behavior that is appropriate to their sex. In this paper I want to explain that women and men have different conversational styles. Language differences begin to emerge at the earliest stages of speech development. In this paper I will identify these differences and explain them. The paper is organized in the following manner: The concept of language socialization will be explained. I will also discuss the impact that one's peer group has on language development. Next I will examine the way in which men and women communicate. Following this discussion of gender differences I will focus on the language patterns that women use. After the discussion of women's speech I will contrast the manner in which men communicate and how these differences may result in misunderstandings between the genders. Finally I will distinguish between "saying and implying". The focus will be what people actually say as they talk to each other.

Book Gender and Conversational Interaction

Download or read book Gender and Conversational Interaction written by Deborah Tannen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the best-selling You Just Don't Understand, Deborah Tannen, has collected twelve papers about gender-related patterns in conversational interaction. The theoretical thrust of the collection, like that of Tannen's own work, is anthropological and sociolinguistic: female and male styles are approached as different "cultural" practice. Beginning with Tannen's own essay arguing for the relativity of discourse strategies, the volume challenges facile generalizations about gender-based styles and explores the complex relationship between gender and language use. The chapters, some previously unpublished and some classics in the field, address discourse across the lifespan, including preschool, junior high school, and adult interaction. They explore such varied discourse contexts as preschool disputes, romantic and sexual teasing among adolescent girls, cooperative competition in adolescent "girl talk," conversational storytelling, a faculty committee meeting, children in an urban black neighborhood at play, and a legal dispute in a Tenejapan village in Mexico. Two chapters review and evaluate the literature on key areas of gender-related linguistic phenomena: interruption and amount of talk. Gender and Conversational Interaction will interest general readers as well as students and scholars in a variety of disciplines including linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology, sociology, psychology, women's studies, and communications.

Book Interruption and Overlap in Conversations Between Men and Women on the Basis of The Big Bang Theory

Download or read book Interruption and Overlap in Conversations Between Men and Women on the Basis of The Big Bang Theory written by Anonym and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Bremen, course: Seminar: Key Topics in Linguistics: Language and Gender, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the portrayal of dominance and control in cross-sex interactions on television. In doing so, stereotypical behaviour of men and women could certainly become visible since what we see on screen is often a reflection of what we expect to see. This study will focus on the analysis of instances of interruption and overlap in the American television series "The Big Bang Theory". By looking at the portrayal of gender behaviour in regards to the cross-sex interactions, the aim will be to observe how power relations between opposite sexes is portrayed to us through television and what it tells us about stereotypical thinking in our society. The difference in male and female language is a frequently discussed subject in modern research. Investigating the different utilization of language of both sexes does not only seem to be of interest to linguists and anthropologists, but equally to modern feminists who for instance engage with the issue of power and the role that it plays in conversations between men and women. Gender researchers such as Don H. Zimmerman and Candace West have helped create the groundwork for the examination of this topic by claiming that interruption is mostly done by men, and that this phenomenon correlates with the fact that dominance and control is often directed towards women during conversations. However, studies such as Zimmerman's and West's have been deemed problematic due to criticism relating to the fact that their main focus lies solely on gender; therefore excluding other important and relevant aspects of identity such as ethnicity, nationality, and occupation.
