Download or read book Other People s Colleges written by Ethan W. Ris and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "America's constant push to make its colleges and universities more efficient and more accountable is not a new phenomenon. Indeed, in Other People's Colleges, Ethan Ris argues that the reform impulse is baked into American higher education. For well over one hundred years, elite reformers have called for sweeping changes in the sector and raised existential questions about its sustainability. Colleges and universities have responded with a combination of resistance and acquiescence. The end result is a sector that has learned to accept top-down reform as part of its existence. When that reform is beneficial (offering major rewards for minor changes), colleges and universities know how to assimilate it. When it is hostile (attacking autonomy or values), they know how to resist it. In the early twentieth century, the "academic engineers," a cadre of elite, external reformers from foundations, businesses, and government, worked to reshape and reorganize the vast base of the higher education pyramid. Their reform efforts were largely directed at the lower tiers of higher education, but their efforts fell short, despite their wealth and power, leaving a legacy of successful resistance that affects every college and university in the United States. Today, another coalition of business leaders, philanthropists, and politicians are again demanding efficiency, accountability, and utility from American higher education. But top-down design is not destiny. Today's reform agenda in higher education should not be viewed as a new existential threat. It is a longstanding fact of life to be assimilated, diverted, or subverted on an ongoing basis"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the various dimensions of gender inequality that persist in higher education and employment in India. It presents an in-depth analysis of the complex challenges women face in higher education participation and in translating higher education opportunities into labour market success and into leadership positions, including in academia. It argues that despite substantial progress towards gender equality in enrolment, these inequalities act as barriers to realising the transformative role that higher education can have for women’s well-being and for the nation’s development. The volume looks at the issues that keep women from accessing the areas of their choice, and the challenges they face in leadership positions in higher education. An important critique of higher education policy and planning, the volume will be of interest to teachers, students and researchers of education, public policy, political science and international relations, economics, feminism, women’s studies, gender studies, law and sociology. It will also be useful for academicians, policymakers and anyone interested in the study of gender in Indian Higher Education.

Download or read book Non Detention System In School Education written by M.N. Jyothi and published by Discovery Publishing House. This book was released on 2003 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government of Andhra Pradesh has introduced the non-detention system, a system of automatic promotion, at the school level realising that education is best imparted in an atmosphere of free progress where the incentive and urge to improve spring from within the educational process rather than from the terror of examination and detentions. Under this system, the students will be automatically promoted to the next class provided they put in a stipulated percentage of attendance. However, there will be two common/public examinations during the school career, one at the end of the upper primary stage and the other at the end of the secondary stage. This non-detention system evoked a mixed reaction from the educational elite. A study, hence, was conducted to evaluate the non-detention system and the results of the study are quite interesting. This research monograph on non-detention system will be great use to the educational planners, administrators, researcher and teachers.
Download or read book Educational Philosophy of Dr S Radhakrishnan written by Dr V N Deshpande and published by Manipal Universal Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The spiritual homelessness of modern man cannot last long,’ thus believed Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975), a prominent philosopher, educationalist, and one of the makers of modern India. His solution to the problems of humanity is a return to the religion of spirit, to be achieved through the right kind of education. Radhakrishnan advocated a sound educational philosophy aimed at harmonious development of the human personality, with utmost emphasis on moral and spiritual education. This book effectively presents Radhakrishnan’s thoughts, highlighting their relevance to the present day. The author has at length discussed Indian philosophy in comparison with the Western thought and successfully established that the East-West synthesis as propagated by Radhakrishnan is the need of the hour to arrest the self-destructive tendency of the world and ensure development and peace. Readers will also get an account of Radhakrishnan’s life story in the backdrop of the political history of pre and post-Independent India.
