Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report and Evidence Upon the Recommendations of Her Majesty's Commissioners for Inquiring Into the State of the University of Oxford: Presented to the Board of Heads of Houses and Proctors December 1, 1853 We will now sum up the chief recommendations which we have thought it our duty to lay before Your Majesty, with a view to restore the University and the Colleges to a sounder condition, and to render their great resources more serviceable to Education and to Learning. We are of opinion: - 1. That the University should receive an indemnification in case it has exceeded its power in altering the Laudian Code, and should henceforth have full authority to make, abrogate, or alter Statutes, with the exception of a few Fundamental Articles not to be altered without the consent of the Crown or some other superior authority. 2. That the right of initiating measures should be confided to a body comprising Professors and other Academical Teachers as well as the Members of the Hebdomadal Board. Book Music and Academia in Victorian Britain

Download or read book Music and Academia in Victorian Britain written by Rosemary Golding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the nineteenth century, music occupied a marginal place in British universities. Degrees were awarded by Oxford and Cambridge, but students (and often professors) were not resident, and there were few formal lectures. It was not until a benefaction initiated the creation of a professorship of music at the University of Edinburgh, in the early nineteenth century, that the idea of music as a university discipline commanded serious consideration. The debates that ensued considered not only music’s identity as art and science, but also the broader function of the university within education and society. Rosemary Golding traces the responses of some of the key players in musical and academic culture to the problems surrounding the establishment of music as an academic discipline. The focus is on four universities: Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge and London. The different institutional contexts, and the approaches taken to music in each university, showcase the various issues surrounding music’s academic identity, as well as wider problems of status and professionalism. In examining the way music challenged conceptions of education and professional identity in the nineteenth century, the book also sheds light on the way the academic study of music continues to challenge modern approaches to music and university education.

Book A Sincere and Teachable Heart

Download or read book A Sincere and Teachable Heart written by Richard Bellon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Sincere and Teachable Heart: Self-Denying Virtue in British Intellectual Life, 1736-1859, Richard Bellon demonstrates that respectability and authority in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain were not grounded foremost in ideas or specialist skills but in the self-denying virtues of patience and humility. Three case studies clarify this relationship between intellectual standards and practical moral duty. The first shows that the Victorians adapted a universal conception of sainthood to the responsibilities specific to class, gender, social rank, and vocation. The second illustrates how these ideals of self-discipline achieved their form and cultural vigor by analyzing the eighteenth-century moral philosophy of Joseph Butler, John Wesley, Samuel Johnson, and William Paley. The final reinterprets conflict between the liberal Anglican Noetics and the conservative Oxford Movement as a clash over the means of developing habits of self-denial.

Book The University of Cambridge

Download or read book The University of Cambridge written by G.R. Evans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-06-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intertwined stories of the great English 'Varsity' universities have many colourful aspects in common, yet each also boasts elements of true distinctiveness. So while the histories of Oxford and Cambridge are both characterised by seething town and gown rivalries, doctrinal conflicts and heretical outbursts, shifts of political and religious allegiance and gripping stories of individual heroism and defiance, they are also narratives of difference and distinctiveness. G R Evans explores the remarkable and unique contribution that Cambridge University has made to society and culture, both in Britain and right across the globe, and will subsequently publish her history of Oxford University to complete a major new history of the two universities. Ranging across 800 years of vivid history, packed with incident, Evans here explores great thinkers such as John Duns Scotus - the 13th century Franciscan Friar who gave his name his name to 'dunces' - and celebrates the extraordinary molecular breakthroughs of Watson and Crick in the 20th century. Moving from the radical new thinking of the Cambridge Platonists and the brilliant scientific discoveries of Isaac Newton to the discovery of the Double Helix and the notorious 'Garden House Hotel Riot' of 1970, the book is published to co-incide with the 800th anniversary of the University's foundation in 1209. The first short history of its kind, it will be a lasting and treasured resource for all Cambridge alumni/ae.
