Book The Renaissance in Italian Art Sculpture and Painting Vol 1 of 3

Download or read book The Renaissance in Italian Art Sculpture and Painting Vol 1 of 3 written by Selwyn Brinton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance in Italian Art (Sculpture and Painting), Vol. 1 of 3: A Handbook for Students and Travellers They become interested in art, they' gain a certain knowledge of certain favourite painters, and there their progress remains; it is to this class, so large and so constantly increasing, in England, on the Continent, and in America, that this work appeals, because it presents a detailed, and yet, it is believed, a clearly-written and interesting account of the Italian schools, studied from that standpoint of evolution, which alone affords a chain of continued interest. In a work of this nature, which is thus essentially popular in its aim, a difficulty occurs in this fact, that points of more purely technical criticism, such, for instance, as the much - debated Rafaelle sketch book question (treated in Part III, Appendix) would affect the straightforward and simple character of the work, and yet in some cases can hardly be passed over. I have tried to meet this difficulty by treating them separately in the Appendix, which I will none the less commend to the reader's more careful interest. The work will consist of three parts, which will deal, speaking broadly, with the Florentine, Venetian, and Roman schools, though the lesser schools will find their place in the analysis. Book excerpt: A new edition--now in two volumes--of the largest and most comprehensive textbook about Italian Renaissance art. Now in its second edition, Italian Renaissance Art presents an updated and even more accessible history. The book has been split into two volumes: the first, covering the period 1300 to 1510; the second, 1490 to 1600. The volumes retain the same innovative decade-by-decade structure as the first edition, and a number of chapters have been revised by the authors to reflect the latest scholarship. The coverage of the Trecento has been expanded, and a new appendix section explains all the key Renaissance art-making techniques, with illustrations and step-by-steps for such processes as lost-wax casting. This book tells the story of art in the great cities of Rome, Florence, and Venice while profiling a range of other centers throughout Italy--including in this edition art from Naples, Padua, and Palermo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The chronology of the Italian Renaissance, its character, and context have long been a topic of discussion among scholars. Some date its beginnings to the fourteenthcentury work of Giotto, others to the generation of Masaccio, Brunelleschi, and Donatello that fl ourished from around 1400. The close of the Renaissance has also proved elusive. Mannerism, for example, is variously considered to be an independent (but subsidiary) late aspect of Renaissance style or a distinct style in its own right."

Book A New History of Italian Renaissance Art

Download or read book A New History of Italian Renaissance Art written by Stephen John Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Campbell and Cole, respected teachers and active researchers, draw on traditional and current scholarship to present complex interpretations in this new edition of their engaging account of Italian Renaissance art. The book's unique decade-by-decade structure is easy to follow, and permits the authors to tell the story of art not only in the great centres of Rome, Florence and Venice, but also in a range of other cities and sites throughout Italy, including more in this edition from Naples, Padua and Palermo. This approach allows the artworks to take centre-stage, in contrast to the book's competitors, which are organized by location or by artist. Other updates for this edition include an expanded first chapter on the Trecento, and a new 'Techniques and Materials' appendix that explains and illustrates all of the major art-making processes of the period.Richly illustrated with high-quality reproductions and new photography of recent restorations, it presents the classic canon of Renaissance painting and sculpture in full, while expanding the scope of conventional surveys by offering a more thorough coverage of architecture, decorative and domestic arts, and print media.

Book The Art of the Italian Renaissance

Download or read book The Art of the Italian Renaissance written by Rolf Toman and published by H.F.Ullmann Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian Renaissance is among the most glamorous epochs of European art. Art historians as well as a wide public are fascinated by three centuries of exceptionally prolific artistic creation that produced works of international fame such as Michelangelo's frescos in the Sistine Chapel. The cityscapes of the great centers of that time would be vastly different without their Renaissance architecture - cities like Florence, Rome, and Venice are veritable museums of an epoch whose art remains vital and influential even today. Impressive illustrations of works from every branch of the fine arts feature prominently in The Art of the Italian Renaissance, which not only explains various aspects of Renaissance art, but also invites readers to observe them closely with its fabulous pictures.
