(Sobieski.); Passages From the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-9; Musings of an Exile Muscovite ferocity is needed, is there any room to question? Ask the annals of the Spanish Inquisition by what diabolical contrivances the bodies of its victims were enabled to endure such fearful tortures, and still live on for the final agony of the stake. Ask the Czar how the ukase is worded which pro vides that not one of so many thousands condemned to receive from five hundred to three thousand lashes each, should escape by death from enduring the full number. Knowing the amount of blood which the moral and physical frame may lose without losing vitality also, the Czar to-day, no less than the Inquisition in past times, contrives to wring out the full measure. But whether England become the sun of peace and freedom to Europe, or the moon-like satellite revolving round the earth where Russia reigns, it is important for her to become acquainted with the character of a nation, destined either to be her partner in pacifying and re-organising Europe, or the victim of her victorious lion in the sordid com pany of, the spread eagle. Book Lviv Wroc aw Cities in Parallel

Download or read book Lviv Wroc aw Cities in Parallel written by Jan Fellerer and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-10 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II, Europe witnessed the massive redrawing of national borders and the efforts to make the population fit those new borders. As a consequence of these forced changes, both Lviv and Wrocław went through cataclysmic changes in population and culture. Assertively Polish prewar Lwów became Soviet Lvov, and then, after 1991, it became assertively Ukrainian Lviv. Breslau, the third largest city in Germany before 1945, was in turn "recovered" by communist Poland as Wrocław. Practically the entire population of Breslau was replaced, and Lwów's demography too was dramatically restructured: many Polish inhabitants migrated to Wrocław and most Jews perished or went into exile. The forced migration of these groups incorporated new myths and the construction of official memory projects. The chapters in this edited book compare the two cities by focusing on lived experiences and "bottom-up" historical processes. Their sources and methods are those of micro-history and include oral testimonies, memoirs, direct observation and questionnaires, examples of popular culture, and media pieces. The essays explore many manifestations of the two sides of the same coin—loss on the one hand, gain on the other—in two cities that, as a result of the political reality of the time, are complementary.

Book Memories of Starobielsk

Download or read book Memories of Starobielsk written by Jozef Czapski and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vivid accounts of life in a Soviet prison camp by the author of Inhuman Land. Interned with thousands of Polish officers in the Soviet prisoner-of-war camp at Starobielsk in September 1939, Józef Czapski was one of a very small number to survive the massacre in the forest of Katyń in April 1940. Memories of Starobielsk portrays these doomed men, some with the detail of a finished portrait, others in vivid sketches that mingle intimacy with respect, as Czapski describes their struggle to remain human under hopeless circumstances. Essays on art, history, and literature complement the memoir, showing Czapski’s lifelong engagement with Russian culture. The short pieces on painting that he wrote while on a train traveling from Moscow to the Second Polish Army’s strategic base in Central Asia stand among his most lyrical and insightful reflections on art.

This book was released on 2008-09-17 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I can't remember when I've learned as much from something I've read—or laughed as much while doing it." —Jacob Weisberg, Slate This international bestseller is an encyclopedic A-Z masterpiece—the perfect introduction to the very core of Western humanism. Clive James rescues, or occasionally destroys, the careers of many of the greatest thinkers, humanists, musicians, artists, and philosophers of the twentieth century. Soaring to Montaigne-like heights, Cultural Amnesia is precisely the book to burnish these memories of a Western civilization that James fears is nearly lost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays, representing three generations of Polish and Jewish scholars, is the first attempt since the fall of Communism to reassess the existing historiography of Polish-Jewish relations just before, during, and after the Second World War. In the spirit of detached scholarly inquiry, these essays fearlessly challenge commonly held views on both sides of the debates.
