Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Rome: In the Light of Recent Discoveries It is impossible for me to mention, one by one, the seien tific discoveries of special importance made under the au spices of the city of Rome; if I did, this Preface would ex oecd in length the volume it introduces. We have discov ered a new archaeological stratum, totally unknown before, the stratum of prehistoric or traditional antiquities; we have discovered a necropolis older than the walls of Servius Tullius, containing more than archaic specimens in bronze, amber, stone, and clay; we have brought to light more than 5 000 feet of the great agger, or embankment of Servius, and ascertained the site of fourteen gates; we have unearthed the remains of numberless houses and pal aces, temples and shrines, roads and drains, parks and gar dens, fora and porticoes, fountains and aqueducts, tombs and mausolea, to such an extent that whereas before 1872 science possessed only approximate attempts at an archmo logical map of Rome, we have put at the disposal of stu dents magnificent ones, covering an area of square metres of the ancient city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome, Vol. 1: For the Use of Schools IN the volume now offered to the public, it is the intention of the author to connect the most important events of Roman history, from the foundation of Rome to the death of Constantine. That these events may be more easily fixed upon the memory, it is thought advisable to separate the narrative into three parts. Part I. Is confined to that period known as the monarchy, which, although very properly regarded as wholly fabulous, is the only foundation that can be obtained for a history upon whose pages almost all the nations of the earth appear. Book Ancient Rome Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ancient Rome Classic Reprint written by Thomas Henry Dyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Rome The history of the foundation of Rome is lost in the darkness of remote antiquity. When the great ness of the city, and its progress in arts and letters, awakened curiosity respecting its origin, authentic records on the subject, if indeed they had ever ex isted, were no longer to be found. Hence a license of conjecture which has produced at the least no fewer than twenty-five distinct legends respecting the foun dation of Rome. To record all these, many of which are merely variations of the same story, would be beside the purpose of the present article. The student who desires a complete account of them will find them very clearly stated in Sir G. Cornewall Lewis's Inquiry into the Credibility of the early Roman History (vol. I. P. 394, and also, though not so fully, in Niebuhr's History of Rome (eng. Trans]. Vol. I. P. 214, chiefly derived from the following ancient sources: Dionys. Halic. I. C. 72 - 74; Pint. Rom. 1, 2; Service, ad Virg. Ace. I. 273; and Festus, s. E. Roma. The importance of the subject, however, and the frequent allusions to it in the classical writers, will not permit us to pass it over in perfect silence; and we shall therefore mention, as compendiously as possible, some of the principal traditions. All the theories on the subject may be reduced to three general heads, as follows - I. That Rome was founded in the age preceding the Trojan War. 11. That it was founded by Aeneas, or other persons, a little after the fall of Troy. 111. That Romulus, grandson of Numitor, king of Alba Longs, was its founder, several centuries after the Trojan War. The ground, in many instances, had been almost untrodden several of the places described are difficult of access, and have never before been visited by foreigners; and, in most cases, published descrip tions either do not exist at all already, or are so inaccurate and untrustworthy as to be only mis guiding. A great field for discovery still remains, even within a day's journey of Rome; and if, in opening the way to others, I lead them to enjoy half the pleasure I have received from my own researches, I shall be more than rewarded.
