Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Faith in America: Recollections of a Missionary I willingly accept the dedication of a study, the subject and object of which are equally clear to us both. People, like individuals, have each a vocation to follow and a mission to fulfil. The mission of the Irish people, a noble and holy mission among all others, is that of propagating and maintaining the Catholic faith. You show by incontestable facts this voca tion of the Irish people, and the manner in which they fulfil their mission in the United States, a country which particularly interests us; but history tells that in every missionary country, as in the United States, the Irish with invincible energy and untiring persever ance, have proved themselves the firm sup porters and propagators of the Catholic faith. You justly recall how dear to me is that por tion of my flock which belongs to the Irish nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Irish Church Missions, Vol. 1: An Account of the Providential Preparation Which Led to the Establishment of the Society for Irish Church Missions to the Roman Catholics in 1849 In giving a history of the Society for Irish Church Missions to the Roman Catholics, in order that a correct impression should he conveyed, it was absolutely necessary to explain in detail the very first links in the chain of events which led to its formation. This will account for the authorship having devolved on me, as none other was intimately acquainted with the minute circumstances of the preparatory steps. This also will serve as an apology for the personal character of the narrative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Shamrock and the Cross: Irish American Novelists Shape American Catholicism, Eileen P. Sullivan traces changes in nineteenth-century American Catholic culture through a study of Catholic popular literature. Analyzing more than thirty novels spanning the period from the 1830s to the 1870s, Sullivan elucidates the ways in which Irish immigration, which transformed the American Catholic population and its institutions, also changed what it meant to be a Catholic in America. In the 1830s and 1840s, most Catholic fiction was written by American-born converts from Protestant denominations; after 1850, most was written by Irish immigrants or their children, who created characters and plots that mirrored immigrants’ lives. The post-1850 novelists portrayed Catholics as a community of people bound together by shared ethnicity, ritual, and loyalty to their priests rather than by shared theological or moral beliefs. Their novels focused on poor and working-class characters; the reasons they left their homeland; how they fared in the American job market; and where they stood on issues such as slavery, abolition, and women’s rights. In developing their plots, these later novelists took positions on capitalism and on race and gender, providing the first alternative to the reigning domestic ideal of women. Far more conscious of American anti-Catholicism than the earlier Catholic novelists, they stressed the dangers of assimilation and the importance of separate institutions supporting a separate culture. Given the influence of the Irish in church institutions, the type of Catholicism they favored became the gold standard for all American Catholics, shaping their consciousness until well into the next century.

Of these, it has chiefly taken to its ai in Ire land that national spirit and pride of ancestry by which the lower classes of our countrymen are so amiably, yet so dangerously dis tiaguished. The Irish are a fondl national people they know li e of their ancestors, but they b eve of them everything which enters into their conceptions of worth and greatness; and they feel a h although mournful consolation, in turning from their own con tion to the supposed freedom and glory and hap iness of other times. These principles have been incorporate into their creed - they receive their religion as the last bequest the last token, of their almost canonised forefathers, and they cling to it with a devoted and desperate fidelity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Father Hand: Founder of All Hallows Catholic College for the Foreign Missions; The Story of a Great Servant of God The largest Foreign Missionary College in the Catholic world was founded some forty-two years ago, near Dublin, by Father Hand, a holy Irish priest. In the first fervour of his ministry he dedicated himself with ardent zeal, to what he believed to be a heavenly inspiration of sending the message of salvation to English-speaking people, particularly to the poor exiles from Erin. Hence the story of his life cannot fail to be interesting, and especially welcome to all belonging to the Old Country. Such a biography is at once a history and an argument; for it adds a bright chapter to the annals of the Irish Church, and furnishes an answer to those who represent the Catholic Clergy of Ireland as indolent and unenlightened. De Montalembert, which I have quoted as an Introduction to these pages, in which the most sympathetic appreciation is made more emphatic through being tempered by regret and blame, begins with these words There is in Europe, seven leagues from France, in sight of our northern shores, a people of which the Empire is vaster than that of Alexander or of the Caesars, and which is at once the most free and the most powerful, the richest and the most manly, the most daring and the most regulated in the world. No people presents a study SO instructive, an aspect so original, contrasts so strange. Happier than Rome, after a thousand.
