Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Eminent Anglo-Saxons, Vol. 2: Illustrating the Dawn of Christianity and Civilization in Great Britain A false impression respecting the early Anglo Saxon age may be made' upon the mind by the biographies in the preceding volume, if attention be exclusively confined to them. In order to have a just view of the period, the individuals noticed must not be regarded as types of the condition of society, but as rare exceptional cases of mental culture, correct habits, and a sincere reception of the gospel, bearing a re lation to the general state of the community Similar to that of a few bright stars to a clouded nocturnal sky. Only within a very small circle was there any apprehension of the necessity and value of that redemption from the guilt and wages of sin by Jesus Christ, which it is the glory of the Scriptures to. Book The Saints and Missionaries of the Anglo Saxon Era Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Saints and Missionaries of the Anglo Saxon Era Classic Reprint written by Daniel Charles Octavius Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saints and Missionaries of the Anglo-Saxon Era The object of this work is not controversial. It is written rather in the firm hope that god, in His own good time, and in His own good way, may so guide the future as to re-unite the Church's divided members. Yet, though not written with any contro versial view, these pages will shew how careful the English Church was in her earlier days to maintain her own proper national rights, while yet reverencing the claims of authority due to the Catholic Com munion at large, and this with special regard to Rome, from whence she had received such great benefits. It is hoped that this volume, while awakening interest in our early history, will enable many to see how far back our annals reach, and how deep the roots that have been laid, as well as under what difficulties so many of highest and purest faith have been god's chosen instruments in building up the Catholic Communion in our land. That god's blessing may rest on his friend's work is the earnest desire of the undersigned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Saints and Missionaries of the Anglo Saxon Era Second Series Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saints and Missionaries of the Anglo-Saxon Era: Second Series All Missionary enterprise suddenly ceased in England soon after the middle of the 8th century. Letters and learning perished also. For a hundred years and more few Saints are recorded in the annals of the Church, and little is told us of them. All this, no doubt, was caused by the ravages of the Danes who turned the country upside down, and destroyed the religious houses. With the Abbeys perished their libraries, their stores of mss., and other documents. The monks also, the chroni clers of their times were slain without mercy. The country, in consequence, sank into an abyss of ignorance. This we have named the Dark Period. Towards the close of the oth century a revival of letters and of religion took place. This was inaugurated by King Alfred, to whom we all owe a debt of infinite gratitude - and this must be our apology for introducing a memoir of him in this book of Saints. Book The Christianization of the Anglo Saxons c 597 c 700

Download or read book The Christianization of the Anglo Saxons c 597 c 700 written by Marilyn Dunn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work treats the Christianization of the Anglo-Saxons as a process of religious change and is the first to establish the importance of Christian doctrines and popular intuitions about death and the dead in the transition, focusing on the outbreak of epidemic disease between 664 and 687 as a crucial period for the survival of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England. It analyzes Anglo-Saxon conceptions of the soul and afterlife as well as traditional mortuary rituals, re-interpreting archaeological evidence to argue that the change from furnished to unfurnished burial in the late seventh and early eighth century demonstrates the success of the church's attempts to counter popular fears that the plague was caused by the return of the dead to carry off the living. The study employs ethnographic comparisons and anthropological theory to further our understanding of pagan Anglo-Saxon deities, ritual and ritual practitioners, and also considers the challenges confronting the Anglo-Saxon church, as it faced not only popular attachment to traditional values and beliefs, but also gendered responses to, or syncretistic constructions of, Christianity.
